कृत्वा मम परित्राणं तव धर्मो न लुप्यते। यदि वाप्यस्य धर्मस्य सूक्ष्मोऽपि स्याद्व्यतिक्रमः
By granting me protection, your dharma is not diminished; even if there were the slightest transgression of this dharma,
स च ते धर्म एव स्याद्दत्वा प्राणान्ममार्जुन। भक्तां च भज मां पार्थ सतामेतन्मतं प्रभो
That would still be dharma for you, O Arjuna, even if you gave your life for me. Serve me, O Partha, as this is the opinion of the virtuous, O lord.
न करिष्यसि चेदेवं मृतां मामुपधारय। प्राणदानान्महाबाहो चर धर्ममनुत्तमम्
If you do not act thus, consider me as dead. O mighty-armed one, by giving your life, practice the highest dharma.
शरणं च प्रपन्नास्मि त्वामद्य पुरुषोत्तम। दीनाननाथान्कौन्तेय परिरक्षसि नित्यशः
Today I have sought refuge in you, O best of men. O son of Kunti, you always protect the distressed and those without support.
साऽहं शऱणमभ्येमि रोरवीमि च दुःखिता। याचे त्वां चाभिकामाहं तस्मात्कुरु मम प्रियम्। स त्वमात्मप्रदानेन सकामां कर्तुमर्हसि
Thus I come to you for refuge, crying out in sorrow. I beseech you, desiring you; therefore, grant me my wish. You ought to fulfill my desire by offering yourself.
एवमुक्तस्तु कौन्तेयः पन्नगेश्वरकन्यया। कृतवांस्तत्तथा सर्वं धर्ममुद्दिश्य कारणम्
Thus addressed by the daughter of the serpent king, the son of Kunti acted entirely as she wished, considering dharma as the reason.
स नागभवने रात्रिं तामुषित्वा प्रतापवान्। `पुत्रमुत्पादयामास स तस्यां सुमनोहरम्
Having spent that night in the abode of the Nagas, the illustrious one begot a most beautiful son upon her.
इरावन्तं महाभागं महाबलपराक्रमम्।' उदितेऽभ्युत्थितः सूर्ये कौरव्यस्य निवेशनात्
He produced Iravan, greatly fortunate and possessing immense strength and valor, who rose at sunrise from the dwelling of the Kauravas.
आगतस्तु पुनस्तत्र गङ्गाद्वारं तया सह। परित्यज्य गता साध्वी उलूपी निजमन्दिरं
Then, together with her, he returned to the gateway of the Ganga; the virtuous Ulupi departed, leaving him, for her own abode.
दत्त्वा वरमजेयत्वं जले सर्वत्र भारत। साध्या जलचराः सर्वे भविष्यन्ति न संशयः
Having granted me the boon of invincibility in water everywhere, O Bharata, all aquatic beings will become accomplished, without doubt.
कथयित्वा च तत्सर्वं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः स भारत। प्रययौ हिमवत्पार्श्वं ततो वज्रधरात्मजः
Having narrated all this to the Brahmins, O Bharata, the son of the wielder of the thunderbolt departed for the side of the Himalayas.
अगस्त्यवटमासाद्य वसिष्ठस्य च पर्वतम्। भृगुतुङ्गे च कौन्तेयः कृतवाञ्शौचमात्मनः
Reaching the hermitage of Agastya and the mountain of Vasistha, and at the peak of Bhrigu, the son of Kunti performed purification rites for himself.
प्रददौ गोसहस्राणि सुबहूनि च भारत। निवेशांश्च द्विजातिभ्यः सोऽददत्कुरुसत्तमः
He gave thousands of cows and many other gifts, O Bharata, and bestowed settlements upon the twice-born, O best of the Kurus.
हिरण्यबिन्दोस्तीर्थे च स्नात्वा पुरुषसत्तमः। दृष्टवान्पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः पुण्यान्यायतनानि च
At the sacred ford of Hiranyabindu, having bathed, O best of men, the foremost of the Pandavas beheld many holy shrines.
अवतीर्य नरश्रेष्ठो ब्राह्मणैः सह भारत। प्राचीं दिशमभिप्रेप्सुर्जगाम भरतर्षभः
The best of men, together with the Brahmins, descended, O Bharata, and set out toward the eastern direction, that foremost of the Bharatas.
आनुपूर्व्येण तीर्थानि दृष्टवान्कुरुसत्तमः। नदीं चोत्पलिनीं रम्यामरण्यं नैमिषं प्रति
Proceeding in order, the best of the Kurus beheld the holy places, as well as the beautiful lotus-filled river and the Naimisha forest.
नन्दामपरनन्दां च कौशिकीं च यशस्विनीम्। महानदीं गयां चैव गङ्गामपि च भारत
He saw the Nanda and Aparananda rivers, the renowned Kausiki, the great river Gaya, and also the Ganga, O Bharata.
एवं तीर्थानि सर्वाणि पश्यमानस्तथाश्रमान्। आत्मनः पावनं कुर्वन्ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ च गाः
Thus, as he beheld all the holy places and hermitages, he purified himself and gave cows to the Brahmins.
अङ्गवङ्गकलिङ्गेषु यानि तीर्थानि कानिचित्। जगाम तानि सर्वाणि पुण्यान्यायतनानि च
He visited all the holy places and sacred shrines in Anga, Vanga, and Kalinga.
दृष्ट्वा च विधिवत्तानि धनं चापि ददौ ततः। कलिङ्गराष्ट्रद्वारेषु ब्राह्मणाः पाण्डवानुगाः। अभ्यनुज्ञाय कौन्तेयमुपावर्तन्त भारत
Having properly seen them, he then gave away wealth; at the borders of the Kalinga kingdom, the Brahmins who had accompanied the Pandava, after granting their permission, turned back, O Bharata.
स तु तैरभ्यनुज्ञातः कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः। सहायैरल्पकैः शूरः प्रययौ यत्र सागरः
Thus permitted by them, Kunti's son Dhananjaya, the valiant one, with only a few companions, set out for the place where the ocean lies.
स कलिङ्गानतिक्रम्य देशानायतनानि च। हर्म्याणि रमणीयानि प्रेक्षणाणो ययौ प्रभुः
Passing through Kalinga and its regions and shrines, the lord went on, beholding delightful mansions.
महेन्द्रपर्वतं दृष्ट्वा तापसैरुपशोभितम्। `गोदावर्यां ततः स्नात्वा तामतीत्य महाबलः
Seeing Mount Mahendra adorned by ascetics, the mighty one then bathed in the Godavari, and, crossing it, moved on.
कावेरीं तां समासाद्य सङ्गमे सागरस्य च। स्नात्वा संपूज्य देवांश्च पितॄंश्च मुनिभिः सह
Reaching the Kaveri at its confluence with the ocean, he bathed and, together with sages, worshipped the gods and ancestors.
समुद्रतीरेण शनैर्मणलूरं जगाम ह
Slowly, along the seashore, he went to Manalura.
तत्र सर्वाणि तीर्थानि पुण्यान्यायतनानि च। अभिगम्य महाबाहुरभ्यगच्छन्महीपतिम्
There, having visited all the holy places and sacred shrines, the mighty-armed one approached the king.
मणलूरेश्वरं राजन्धर्मज्ञं चित्रवाहनम्। तस्य चित्राङ्गदा नाम दुहिता चारुदर्शना
O King, the ruler of Manalura was Citravahana, righteous and wise; his daughter was named Citrangada, of lovely appearance.
तां ददर्श पुरे तस्मिन्विचरन्तीं यदृच्छया। दृष्ट्वा च तां वरारोहां चकमे चैत्रवाहनीम्
In that city, by chance, he saw her wandering; seeing that beautiful-hipped maiden, he desired Citravahana's daughter.
अभिगम्य च राजानमवदत्स्वं प्रयोजनम्। देहि मे खल्विमां राजन्क्षत्रियाय महात्मने
Approaching the king, he stated his purpose: 'Give me this maiden, O King, to this great-souled Kshatriya.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा त्वब्रवीद्राजा कस्य पुत्रोऽसि नाम किम्। उवाच तं पाण्डवोऽहं कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः
Hearing this, the king asked, 'Whose son are you, and what is your name?' He replied, 'I am Pandava, Dhananjaya, son of Kunti.'
