दिव्येषु सर्वकामेषु समानीतेषु तावुभौ। वरासनेषु संहृष्टौ सह स्त्रीभिर्निषीदतुः
There, in a divine place where all pleasures had been brought together, the two, delighted, sat on splendid seats together with women.
ततो वादित्रनृत्ताभ्यामुपातिष्ठन्त तौ स्त्रियः। गीतैश्च स्तुतिसंयुक्तैः प्रीत्या समुपजग्मिरे
Then women attended upon them with music and dance, approaching joyfully with songs joined to praise.
ततस्तिलोत्तमा तत्र वने पुष्पाणि चिन्वती। वेषं सा क्षिप्तमाधाय रक्तेनैकेन वाससा
At that time, Tilottamā, gathering flowers in the forest, wore a garment thrown over her, a single red cloth.
नदीतीरेषु जातान्सा कर्णिकारान्प्रचिन्वती। शनैर्जगाम तं देशं यत्रास्तां तौ महासुरौ
As she picked karṇikāra flowers growing on the riverbanks, she slowly approached the place where those two great asuras were.
तौ तु पीत्वा वरं पानं मदरक्तान्तलोचनौ। दृष्ट्वैव तां वरारोहां व्यथितौ संबभूवतुः
Having drunk excellent wine, their eyes reddened with intoxication, the two, seeing her of exquisite form, became agitated.
तावुत्थायासनं हित्वा जग्मतुर्यत्र सा स्थिता। उभौ च कामसंमत्तावुभौ प्रार्थयतश्च ताम्
Rising from their seats and leaving them behind, both, overcome by desire, went to where she stood and both sought her.
दक्षिणे तां करे सुभ्रूं सुन्दो जग्राह पाणिना। उपसुन्दोपि जग्राह वामे पाणौ तिलोत्तमाम्
Sunda seized her right hand with his own, O beautiful-browed one, and Upasunda took Tilottamā by her left hand.
वरप्रदानमत्तौ तावौरसेन बलेन च। धनरत्नमदाभ्यां च सुरापानमदेन च
Intoxicated by the granting of boons, by their own strength, by the pride of wealth and jewels, and by the intoxication of wine,
सर्वैरेतैर्मदैर्मत्तावन्योन्यं भ्रुकुटीकृतौ। मदकामसमाविष्टौ परस्परमथोचतुः
Maddened by all these intoxications, frowning at each other, possessed by drunken passion, they spoke to one another.
मम भार्या तव गुरुरिति सुन्दोऽभ्यभाषत। मम भार्या तव वधूरुपसुन्दोऽभ्यभाषत
"She is my wife, she is your elder," said Sunda; "She is my wife, she is your sister-in-law," said Upasunda.
नैषा तव ममैषेति ततस्तौ मन्युराविशत्। तस्या रूपेण संमत्तौ विगतस्नेहसौहृदौ
"She is not yours, she is mine!"—thus anger seized them; maddened by her beauty, their affection and friendship vanished.
तस्या हेतोर्गदे भीमे संगृह्णीतामुभौ तदा। प्रगृह्य च गदे भीमे तस्यां तौ काममोहितौ
Because of her, the two seized heavy maces, and, overcome by desire for her, they grasped those terrible weapons.
अहंपूर्वमहंपूर्वमित्यन्योन्यं निजघ्नतुः। तौ गदाभिहतौ भीमौ पेततुर्धरणीतले
Crying, "I first! I first!" they struck each other; struck by the heavy maces, both fell to the ground.
रुधिरेणावसिक्ताङ्गौ द्वाविवार्कौ नभश्च्युतौ। ततस्ता विद्रुता नार्यः स च दैत्यगणस्तथा
Their bodies drenched in blood, the two, like rival lions fallen from the sky; then the women fled, as did the host of demons.
पातालमगमत्सर्वो विषादभयकम्पितः। ततः पितामहस्तत्र सहदेवैर्महर्षिभिः
All, trembling with fear and poisoned by dread, descended to the netherworld; then the Grandfather, together with the gods and great sages, arrived there.
आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा पूजयंश्च तिलोत्तमाम्। वरेण च्छन्दयामास भगवान्प्रपितामहः
The pure-hearted one, worshipping Tilottama, came; and the blessed Grandfather offered her a boon of her choosing.
वरं दित्सुः स तत्रैनां प्रीतः प्राह पितामहः। आदित्यचरिताँल्लोकान्विचरिष्यसि भामिनि
Desiring to grant her a boon, the Grandfather, pleased, said to her: 'O radiant lady, you shall move among worlds as the sun does.'
तेजसा च सुदृष्टां त्वां न करिष्यति कश्चन। एवं तस्यै वरं दत्वा सर्वलोकपितामहः
And by your brilliance, no one will be able to look upon you; thus, having granted her this boon, the Grandfather of all worlds—
इन्द्रे त्रैलोक्यमाधाय ब्रह्मलोकं गतः प्रभुः। एवं तौ सहितौ भऊत्वा सर्वार्थेष्वेकनिश्चयौ
Entrusting the three worlds to Indra, the Lord went to the world of Brahma; thus, the two, united in purpose regarding all matters—
तिलोत्तमार्थं संक्रुद्धावन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः। तस्माद्ब्रवीमि वः स्नेहात्सर्वाभरतसत्तमाः
Angry with each other over Tilottama, they struck one another; therefore, out of affection, I tell you all, best of the Bharatas—
यथा वो नात्र भेदः स्यात्सर्वेषां द्रौपदीकृते। तथा कुरुत भद्रं वो मम चेत्प्रियमिच्छथ
So that there may be no division among you all because of Draupadi, act accordingly, if you desire my welfare.
एवमुक्ता महात्मानो नारदेन महर्षिणा। समयं चक्रिरे राजंस्तेऽन्योन्यवशमागताः। समक्षं तस्य देवर्षेर्नारदस्यामितौजसः
Thus addressed by the great sage Narada, those high-souled ones made an agreement, each submitting to the other, in the presence of the mighty devarṣi Narada.
एकैकस्य गृहे कृष्णा वसेद्वर्षमकल्मषा' द्रौपद्या नः सहासीनानन्योन्यं योऽभिदर्शयेत्। स नो द्वादश मासानि ब्रह्मचारी वने वसेत्
Let Krishna dwell, pure, for a year in each one's house; whoever, while seated with Draupadi, sees another, shall dwell in the forest as a celibate for twelve months.
कृते तु समये तस्मिन्पाण्डवैर्धर्मचारिभिः। नारदोऽप्यगमत्प्रीत इष्टं देशं महामुनिः
When that agreement was made by the righteous Pandavas, the great sage Narada, pleased, departed to his desired abode.
एवं तैः समयः पूर्वं कृतो नारदचोदितैः। न चाभिद्यन्त ते सर्वे तदान्योन्येन भारत
Thus, at Narada's urging, they made this agreement beforehand, and at that time, none of them violated it, O Bharata.
अभ्यनन्दन्त ते सर्वे तदान्योन्यं च पाण्डवाः। एतद्विस्तरशः सर्वमाख्यातं ते नराधिप
All the Pandavas then rejoiced with one another; all this has been related to you in detail, O king.
काले च तस्मिन्संपन्ने यथावज्जनमेजय
And when that time had passed, O Janamejaya—
एवं ते समयं कृत्वा न्यवसंस्तत्र पाण्डवाः। वशे शस्त्रप्रतापेन कुर्वन्तोऽन्यान्महीक्षितः
Having made this agreement, the Pandavas dwelt there, subduing other kings by the power of their arms.
तेषां मनुजसिंहानां पञ्चानाममितौजसाम्। बभूव कृष्णा सर्वेषां पार्थानां वशवर्तिनी
Among those five lion-like men of immeasurable energy, Krishna was obedient to all the sons of Pritha.
ते तया तैश्च सा वीरैः पतिभिः सह पञ्चभिः। बभूव परमप्रीता नागैरिव सरस्वती
She, along with those heroes—her five husbands—was supremely delighted, as Sarasvati is with the serpents.
