Then all the divine sages, the Siddhas, and the supreme seers came together, having witnessed that great slaughter and extreme distress.
Those who had conquered anger, mastered themselves, and subdued their senses, approached Pitāmaha, the grandsire of the worlds, moved by compassion.
There they saw Pitāmaha seated with the gods, surrounded on all sides by Siddhas and Brahmarṣis.
There were present the great god Mahādeva, Agni with Vāyu, the Moon and Sun, Indra, the lords of creation, and the seers.
The Vaikhānasas, Vālakhilyas, forest-dwellers, Marīcipas, the unborn and the wise, ascetics filled with radiance, were also there.
All these seers approached Pitāmaha; then, having come near, all the great sages, afflicted, spoke to him.
They reported in full the deeds of Sunda and Upasunda—how it was done, by whom, and in what manner.
Then they conveyed everything in its entirety to Pitāmaha; and all the hosts of gods and the supreme seers as well.
Having placed that matter before him, they urged Pitāmaha; then Pitāmaha, having heard their words,
After reflecting for a moment and determining what should be done, he summoned Viśvakarman, intending the destruction of the two.
Seeing Viśvakarman, Pitāmaha commanded him: 'Let a single enchanting woman be created, O great ascetic.'
Having bowed to Pitāmaha and welcomed his words, Viśvakarman created a divine woman, contemplating again and again.
He gathered together whatever was beautiful among all beings, moving and unmoving, in the three worlds, and brought it there.
He placed millions of gems upon her body; he fashioned her as a mass of jewels, in the form of a goddess.
She, created with great care by Viśvakarman, became unrivalled in beauty among women in the three worlds.
There was not the slightest imperfection on her body in terms of beauty; wherever one’s gaze was directed, it did not tire of beholding her.
She, the embodiment of beauty, possessing any form at will and radiant, approached Pitāmaha and said, 'What shall I do?'
Pleased upon seeing her, he granted her a boon out of delight: supreme beauty and charm over all beings, endowed with prosperity.
By that boon, and by the act of the creator at that time, she took away the eyes and minds of all beings.
Gathering together the finest particles from all gems, her name was given as Tilottama by the Grandfather.
Having bowed to Brahma with joined palms, she spoke these words: 'O Lord of beings, what is to be done by me, for which I have been created today?'
Go, O Tilottama, with a form to be desired, and enchant the two Asuras, Sunda and Upasunda, O blessed one.
So that, because of your appearance and the wealth of your beauty, enmity may arise between them—do thus.
She, having promised 'So be it,' and having bowed to the Grandfather, made a circumambulation of the assembly of the gods.
The Blessed Lord sat facing east, Maheshvara was to the south, and the gods were to the north; all the sages were everywhere.
As she was making that circumambulation there, Indra and the Blessed Sthanu lost their composure.
As she went past, desiring greatly to see her, another face with lotus-like eyes appeared on the right side.
As she turned behind, a face appeared at the back; and as she went to the north side, a face appeared on the north.
Even for Mahendra, a thousand wide eyes, red at the corners, appeared all over—at the back, the sides, and the front.
Thus, in ancient times, Sthanu, the great god, became four-faced, and the slayer of Bala became thousand-eyed.
