पुनः पुनश्च संहर्षाद्ब्राह्मणान्भर पौरव। अद्यैव नारदः श्रीमानागमिष्यति सत्वरः
Again and again, out of joy, support the Brahmanas, O descendant of Puru; today itself, the illustrious Narada will swiftly arrive.
आदत्स्व तस्य वाक्यानि शासनं कुरु तस्य वै। एवमुक्त्वा ततः कुन्तीमभिवाद्य जनार्दनः
Receive his words and carry out his instructions; having said this, Janardana then bowed to Kunti.
उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा गमिष्यामि नमोस्तु ते
He spoke to her with gentle words: 'I shall depart—my respects to you.'
आर्येण समभिज्ञातं त्वया वै यदुपुङ्गव। त्वया नाथेन गोविन्द दुःखं तीर्णं महत्तरम्
What has been recognized by the noble one has indeed been understood by you, O foremost of the Yadus; with you as protector, O Govinda, we have crossed over great suffering.
त्वं हि नाथस्त्वनाथानां दरिद्राणां विशेषतः। सर्वदुःखानि शाम्यन्ति तव संदर्शनान्मम
You are the protector of the unprotected, especially of the poor; all my sorrows are calmed by your very sight.
स्मरस्वैनान्महाप्राज्ञ तेन जीवन्ति पाण्डवाः
Remember these things, O greatly wise one; by that alone, the Pandavas live.
करिष्यामीति चामन्त्र्य अभिवाद्य पितृष्वसाम्। गमनाय मतिं चक्रे वासुदेवः सहानुगः
Having said, 'I shall do so,' and bowing to his paternal aunt, Vasudeva, along with his followers, resolved to depart.
तान्निवेश्य ततो वीरः सह रामेण कौरवान्। ययौ द्वारवतीं राजन्पाण्डवानुमते तदा
Then, having settled them, the hero, together with Rama, took leave of the Kauravas and went to Dvaraka, with the consent of the Pandavas, O king.
एवं संप्राप्य राज्यं तदिन्द्रप्रस्थे तपोधन। अत ऊर्ध्वं नरव्याघ्राः किमकुर्वत पाण्डवाः
Thus, having attained that kingdom at Indraprastha, O possessor of austerities, what did the tiger-like Pandavas do thereafter?
सर्व एव महात्मानः सर्वे मम पितामहाः। द्रौपदी धर्मपत्नी च कथं तानन्ववर्तत
All of them were great-souled, all were my grandfathers; and Draupadi, the wife in righteousness—how did she conduct herself with them?
कथमासुश्च कृष्णायामेकस्यां ते नरर्षभाः। वर्तमाना महाभागा नाभिद्यन्त परस्परम्
How did those illustrious men, living with Krishnaa alone, not come into conflict with one another?
श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं तत्र विस्तरेण यथातथम्। तेषां चेष्टितमन्योन्यं युक्तानां कृष्णया सह
I wish to hear in detail and truthfully about their conduct with one another, as they lived together with Krishnaa.
धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञाता इन्द्रप्रस्थं प्रविश्य तत्। रेमिरे पुरुषव्याघ्राः कृष्णया सह पाण्डवाः
Having received Dhritarashtra’s permission, the tiger-like Pandavas entered Indraprastha together with Krishna.
प्राप्य राज्यं महातेजाः सत्यसन्धो युधिष्ठिरः। पालयामास धर्मेण पृथिवीं भ्रातृभिः सह
Having attained the kingdom, the mighty and truthful Yudhishthira ruled the earth in accordance with dharma, together with his brothers.
जितारयो महात्मानः सत्यधर्मपरायणाः। एवं पुरमिदं प्राप्य तत्रोषुः पाण्डुनन्दनाः
The great-souled sons of Pandu, devoted to truth and righteousness and victorious over their enemies, having obtained this city, dwelled there.
कुर्वाणाः पौरकार्याणि सर्वाणि भरतर्षभाः। आसांचक्रुर्महार्हेषु पार्थिवेष्वासनेषु च
The best of the Bharatas performed all civic duties, and they sat upon royal seats of great value.
तेषु तत्रोपविष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। आययौ धर्मराजं तु द्रष्टुकामोऽथ नारदः
While those great-souled Pandavas were seated there, the sage Narada came, desiring to see the king of dharma.
पथा नक्षत्रजुष्टेन सुपर्णाचरितेन च। चन्द्रसूर्यप्रकाशेन सेवितेन महर्षिभिः
He traveled by a path adorned by stars, traversed by Suparna, shining with the light of the moon and sun, and frequented by great sages.
नभस्स्थलेन दिव्येन दुर्लभेनातपस्विनाम्। भूतार्चितो भूतधरां राष्ट्रमन्दिरभूषिताम्
By a celestial route through the sky, difficult for ascetics to attain, honored by beings, he came to the earth adorned with cities and palaces.
अवेक्षमाणो द्युतिमानाजगाम महातपाः। सर्ववेदान्तगो विप्रः सर्ववेदाङ्गपारगः
Observing everything, the radiant and austere sage, learned in all Vedanta and accomplished in all branches of the Vedas, arrived.
परेण तपसा युक्तो ब्राह्मेण तपसा वृतः। नये नीतौ च निस्तो विश्रुतश्च महामुनिः
Endowed with supreme asceticism, enveloped in Brahmanical austerity, skilled in law and governance, the great sage was renowned.
परात्परतरं प्राप्तो धर्मान्समभिजग्मिवान्। भावितात्मा गतरजाः शान्तो मृदुर्ऋजुर्दिवजः
Having attained the highest dharma, surpassing all others, his mind purified, free from passion, peaceful, gentle, upright, and bearing the banner of self-control.
धर्मेणाधिगतः सर्वैर्देवदानवमानुषैः। क्षीणकर्मसु पापेषु भूतेषु विविधेषु च
He was realized in dharma by all the gods, asuras, and humans, when their actions and sins had diminished among the various beings.
सर्वथा कृतमर्यादो वेदेषु विविधेषु च। शतशः सोमपा यज्ञे पुण्ये पुण्यकृदग्निचित्
In every way he observed proper conduct, and in the various Vedas; hundreds of times he drank soma in pure sacrifices, performing meritorious acts and tending the sacred fire.
ऋक्सामयजुषां वेत्ता न्यायदृग्धर्मकोविदः। ऋजुरारोहबान्वृद्धो भूयिष्ठपथिकोऽनघः
He was a knower of the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas, wise in justice and dharma, upright, of noble descent, aged, a great traveler, and sinless.
श्लक्ष्णया शिखयोपेतः संपन्नः परमत्विषा। अवदाते च सूक्ष्मे च दिव्ये च रचिते शुभे
With a smooth topknot, endowed with supreme brilliance, clad in pure, fine, and divine garments, beautifully fashioned.
महेन्द्रदत्ते महती बिभ्रत्परमवाससी। जाम्बूनदमये दिव्ये गण्डूपदमुखे नवे
Wearing a great upper garment given by Mahendra, and a new divine girdle made of gold, with a shining clasp.
अग्न्यर्कसदृशे दिव्ये धारयन्कुण्डले शुभे। राजतच्छत्रमुच्छ्रित्य चित्रं परमवर्चसम्
He wore beautiful earrings, divine and radiant like fire and the sun, and held aloft a silver parasol, splendid and of supreme luster.
प्राप्य दुष्प्रापमन्येन ब्रह्मवर्चसमुत्तमम्। भवने भूमिपालस्य बृहस्पतिरिवाप्लुतः
Having attained the highest Brahmanical splendor, difficult for others to obtain, he entered the king’s palace like Brihaspati himself.
संहितायां च सर्वेषां स्थितस्योपस्थितस्य च। द्विपदस्य च धर्मस्य क्रमधर्मस्य पारगः
He was accomplished in the collection of all scriptures, in the established and applied dharma of all bipeds, and in the order of dharma.
