द्विपक्षगरुडप्रख्यैर्द्वारैः सौधैश्च शोभितम्। गुप्तमभ्रचयप्रख्यैर्गोपुरैर्मन्दरोपमैः
It was splendid with gates and turrets resembling the wings of Garuda and elephants, guarded by lofty gateways like clusters of clouds and as grand as Mount Mandara.
विविधैरपि निर्विद्धैः शस्त्रोपेतैः सुसंवृतैः। शक्तिभिश्चावृतं तद्धि द्विजिह्वैरिव पन्नगैः
It was protected by various kinds of well-armed warriors, equipped with weapons, and surrounded by forces like serpents with two tongues.
तल्पैश्चाभ्यासिकैर्युक्तं शुशुभे योधरक्षितम्। थीक्ष्णाङ्कुशशतघ्नीभिर्यन्त्रजालैश्च शोभितम्
Furnished with couches for the guards, it shone, protected by warriors, and was adorned with sharp goads, engines of war, and intricate mechanical devices.
आयसैश्च महाचक्रैः शुशुभे तत्पुरोत्तमम्। सुविभक्तमहारथ्यं देवताबाधवर्जितम्
That excellent city gleamed with great iron wheels, had well-laid broad avenues, and was free from any disturbance by supernatural beings.
विरोचमानं विविधैः पाण्डुरैर्भवनोत्तमैः। तत्त्रिविष्टपसंकाशमिन्द्रप्रस्थं व्यरोचत
Radiant with various splendid white mansions, that Indraprastha appeared like the celestial city of the gods.
मेघवृन्दमिवाकाशे विद्धं विद्युत्समावृतम्। तत्र रम्ये शिवे देशे कौरव्यस्य निवेशनम्

शुशुभे धनसंपूर्णं धनाध्यक्षक्षयोपमम्। तत्रागच्छन्द्विजा राजन्सर्ववेदविदां वराः

निवासं रोचयन्ति स्म सर्वभाषाविदस्तथा। वणिजश्चाययुस्तत्र नानादिग्भ्यो धनार्थिनः

सर्वशिल्पविदस्तत्र वासायाभ्यागमंस्तदा। उद्यानानि च रम्याणि नगरस्य समन्ततः
At that time, all those skilled in every art came there to reside, and delightful gardens surrounded the city on all sides.
आम्रैराम्रातकैर्नीपैरशोकैश्चम्पकैस्तथा। पुन्नागैर्नागपुष्पैश्च लकुचैः पनसैस्तथा
With mango, amrataka, nipa, ashoka, champaka, punnaga, nagapushpa, lakucha, and jackfruit trees,
शालतालतमालैश्च बकुलैश्च सकेतकैः। मनोहरैः सुपुष्पैश्च फलभारावनामितैः
With shala, tala, tamala, bakula, saketaka, and other charming trees, heavy with beautiful flowers and bending under the weight of fruit,
प्राचीनामलकैर्लोध्रैरङ्कोलैश्च सुपिष्पितैः। जम्बूभिः पाटलाभिश्च कुब्जकैरतिमुक्तकैः
With ancient amalaka, lodhra, ankola trees in full bloom, and with jambu, patala, kubjaka, and atimuktaka,
करवीरैः पारिजातैरन्यैश्च विविधैर्द्रुमैः। नित्यपुष्पफलोपेतैर्नानाद्विजगणायुतैः
With karavira, parijata, and many other kinds of trees, always bearing flowers and fruits, and filled with flocks of various birds,
मत्तबर्हिणसंघुष्टकोकिलैश्च सदामदैः। गृहैरादर्शविमलैर्विविधैश्च लतागृहैः
Resounding with intoxicated peacocks and ever-delighted cuckoos, with houses shining like mirrors and various vine-covered dwellings,
मनोहरैश्चित्रगृहैस्तथाऽजगतिप्रवतैः। वापीभिर्विविधाभिश्च पूर्णाभिः परमाम्भसा
With enchanting painted houses, artificial hills and valleys, and various ponds filled with pure water,
सरोभिरतिरम्यैश्च पद्मोत्पलसुगन्धिभिः। हंसकारण्डवयुतैश्चक्रवाकोपशोभितैः
With exceedingly delightful lakes fragrant with lotuses and water-lilies, inhabited by swans and cranes, and adorned with chakravaka ducks.
रम्याश्च विविधास्तत्र पुष्करिण्यो वनावृताः। तडागानि च रम्याणि बृहन्ति सुबहूनि च
There, delightful and various lotus ponds surrounded by forests were seen, and also many beautiful and large reservoirs.
नदी च नन्दिनी नाम सा पुरीमुपगूहति। चातुर्वर्ण्यसमाकीर्णमन्यैः शिल्पिभिरावृतम्
And the river named Nandinī embraces the city, which is filled with people of all four classes and crowded with other artisans.
सर्वदाभिसृतं सद्भिः कारितं विश्वकर्मणा। उपभोगसमृद्धैश्च सर्वद्रव्यसमावृतम्
Always frequented by the virtuous, constructed by Viśvakarman, and filled with abundant enjoyments and all kinds of wealth.
नित्यमार्यजनोपेतं नरनारीगणैर्युतम्। वाजिवारणसंपूर्णं गोभिरुष्ट्रैः खरैरजैः
Constantly inhabited by noble people, thronged with groups of men and women, filled with horses and elephants, as well as cows, camels, asses, and goats.
तत्त्रिविष्टपसङ्काशमिन्द्रप्रस्थं व्यरोचत। पुरीं सर्वगुणोपेतां निर्मितां विश्वकर्मणा

Having placed Vyāsa at the forefront, and standing by Dhaumya's counsel, the king, together with his brothers, proceeded along the royal road.
औपवाह्यगतो राजा केशवेन सहाभिभूः। तोरणद्वारसुमुखं द्वात्रिंशद्द्वारसंयुतम्
The king, mounted on his chariot, accompanied by Keśava, entered through the splendid main gate, adorned with thirty-two gateways.
वर्धमानपुरद्वारात्प्रविवेश महाद्युतिः। शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषाः श्रूयन्ते बहवो भृशम्

जयेति ब्राह्मणगिरः श्रूयन्ते च सहस्रशः। संस्तूयमानो मुनिभिः सूतमागधबन्दिभिः
The voices of Brahmins crying 'Victory!' were heard by the thousands, as he was praised by sages, bards, and minstrels.
औपवाह्यगतो राजा राजमार्गमतीत्य च। कृतमङ्गलसत्कारं प्रविवेश गृहोत्तमम्
The king, having arrived in his chariot and traversed the royal road, entered the foremost mansion, honored with auspicious ceremonies.
प्रविश्य भवनं राजा नागरैरभिसंवृतः। प्रहृष्टमुदितैरासीत्सत्कारैरभिपूजितः
Entering the palace, the king, surrounded by citizens, was filled with joy and delight, and was honored with respectful welcomes.
पूजयामास विप्रेन्द्रान्केशेन महात्मना। ततस्तु राष्ट्रं नगरं नरनारीगणायुतम्
He worshipped the foremost Brahmins with great reverence; then the kingdom and city, crowded with multitudes of men and women—
गोधनैश्च समाकीर्णं सस्यैर्वृद्धिं तदागमत्
—and filled with herds of cattle and abundant crops—then prospered.
