पुण्याहं वाच्यतां तात गोसहस्रं प्रदीयताम्। ग्राममुख्याश्च विप्रेभ्यो दीयन्तां बहुदक्षिणाः
Let the auspicious day be proclaimed, dear one, and let a thousand cows be given; let the village chiefs also give generously to the Brahmins.
अङ्गदे मकुटं क्षत्तर्हस्ताभरणमानय। मुक्तावलीश्च हारं च निष्काणि कटकानि च
O steward, bring the crown for the head, the ornaments for the hands, pearl necklaces, a garland, gold coins, and armlets.
कटिबन्धश्च सूत्रं च तथोदरनिबन्धनम्। अष्टोत्तरसहस्रं तु ब्राह्मणाधिष्ठिता गजाः
With a girdle at the waist, a sacred thread, and a binding around the belly, elephants numbering one thousand and eight, presided over by Brahmanas—
जाह्नवीसलिलं शीघ्रमानीयन्तां पुरोहितैः। अभिषेकोदकक्लिन्नं सर्वाभरणभूषितम्
Let the priests quickly bring water from the Ganges, to bathe him for the consecration, adorned with all ornaments.
औपवाह्योपरिगतं दिव्यचारमरवीजितम्। सुवर्णमणिचित्रेण श्वेतच्छत्रेण शोभितम्
Seated upon the ceremonial chariot, fanned by divine fans, and beautified by a white parasol adorned with gold and gems—
जयेति द्विजवाक्येनु स्तूयमानं नृपैस्तथा। दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीसुतं ज्येष्ठमाजमीढं युधिष्ठिरम्
Acclaimed by Brahmanas with cries of 'Victory!' and praised likewise by kings, they beheld Yudhishthira, the eldest son of Kunti, the foremost of the Ajamidhas.
प्रीताः प्रीतेन मनसा प्रशंसन्तु परे जनाः। पाण्डोः कृतोपकारस्य राज्यं दत्वा ममैव च
Let others, pleased in their hearts, praise him joyfully, for having granted the kingdom to me, the son of Pandu, who has rendered me great service.
प्रतिक्रिया कृतमिदं भविष्यति न संशयः। भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपः क्षत्ता साधुसाध्वित्यथाब्रुवन्
This act will surely be repaid—there is no doubt; Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and Vidura then said, 'Well done, well done.'
युक्तमेतन्महाभाग कौरवाणां यशस्करम्। शीघ्रमद्यैव राजेन्द्र त्वयोक्तं कर्तुमर्हसि
This is fitting, O greatly fortunate one, and brings glory to the Kauravas; O king of kings, you should have this done at once, as you have said.
इत्येवमुक्तो वार्ष्णेयस्त्वरयामास तत्तदा। तथोक्तं धृतराष्ट्रेण कारयामास केशवः
Thus addressed, Krishna of the Vrishni clan hastened to carry out all that was ordered; and as instructed by Dhritarashtra, Keshava had it done.
तस्मिन्क्षणे महाराज कृष्णद्वैपायनस्तदा। आगत्य कुरुभिः सर्वैः पूजितः ससुहृद्गणैः
At that moment, O great king, Krishna Dvaipayana arrived, honored by all the Kurus and their friends.
मूर्धाभिषिक्तैः सहितो ब्राह्मणैर्वेदपारगैः। कारयामास विधिवत्केशवानुमते तदा
Together with Brahmanas learned in the Vedas, who had anointed his head, he performed the rites according to rule, with Keshava's approval.
कृपो द्रोणश्च भीष्मश्च धौम्यश्च व्यासकेशवौ। बाह्लीकः सोमदत्तश्च चातुर्वेद्यपुरस्कृताः
Kripa, Drona, Bhishma, Dhaumya, Vyasa, Keshava, Bahlika, and Somadatta, all led by those versed in the four Vedas—
अभिषेकं तदा चक्रुर्भद्रपीठे सुसंस्कृतम्
At that time, they performed the consecration on the auspicious, well-prepared throne.
जित्वा तु पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां वशे कृत्वा नृपान्भवान्। राजसूयादिभिर्यज्ञैः क्रतुभिर्वरदक्षिणैः
Having conquered the whole earth and brought the kings under your sway, you should perform Rajasuya and other sacrifices, with great gifts.
स्नात्वा ह्यवभृथस्नानं मोदतां बान्धवैः सह। एवमुक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे आशीर्भिरभिपूजयन्
After bathing in the concluding ablution, rejoice with your kinsmen; thus addressed, they all honored him with blessings.
मूर्धाभिषिक्तः कौरव्यः सर्वाभरणभूषितः। जयेति संस्तुतो राजा प्रददौ धनमक्षयम्
The Kaurava, anointed on the head and adorned with all ornaments, was acclaimed with cries of 'Victory!' and the king gave away inexhaustible wealth.
सर्वमूर्धाभिषिक्तैश्च पूजितः कुरनन्दनः। औपवाह्यमथारुह्य श्वेतच्छत्रेण शोभितः
Honored by all those who had performed the anointing, the joy of the Kurus mounted the ceremonial chariot, shining beneath the white parasol.
रराज राजाभिमतो महेन्द्र इव दैवतैः। ततः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य नगरं नागसाह्वयम्
The king, beloved by the people, shone like Mahendra among the gods; then, after circumambulating the city of Nagasahvaya—
प्रविवेश तदा राजा नागरैः पूजितो गृहम्। मूर्धाभिषिक्तं कौन्तेयमभ्यगच्छन्त कौरवाः
The king then entered his house, honored by the townspeople; the Kauravas approached the son of Kunti, who had been anointed on the head.
गान्धारिपुत्राः शोचन्तः सर्वे ते सह बान्धवैः। ज्ञात्वा शोकं च पुत्राणां धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीदिदं
The sons of Gandhari, grieving together with their relatives, when they learned of the sorrow of the sons, Dhritarashtra spoke these words:
समक्षं वासुदेवस्य कुरूणां च समक्षतः। अभिषेकस्त्वया प्राप्तो दुष्प्रापो ह्यकृतात्मभिः
In the presence of Vasudeva and all the Kurus, you have attained the consecration, which is indeed difficult to obtain for those who have not mastered themselves.
गच्छ त्वमद्यैव नृप कृतकृत्योऽसि कौरव। आयुः पुरूरवा राजन्नहुषेण ययातिना
Go now today, O king, your duties are accomplished, O Kaurava; your lifespan, like that of Pururavas, Nahusha, and Yayati, is fulfilled.
तत्रैव निवसन्ति स्म खाण्डवे तु नृपोत्तम। राजधानी तु सर्वेषां पौरवाणां महाभुज
There, in Khandava, the best of kings once resided; that was the capital of all the mighty-armed descendants of Puru.
विनाशितं मुनिगणैर्लोभाद्बुधसुतस्य वै। तस्मात्त्वं खाण्डवप्रस्थं पुरं राष्ट्रं च वर्धय
It was destroyed by bands of sages out of greed for the son of Budha; therefore, you must now cause the city and kingdom of Khandavaprastha to flourish.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश्च कृतलक्षणाः। त्वद्भक्त्या जन्तवश्चान्ये भजन्त्येव पुरं शुभम्
Brahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras, all marked by their own duties, and other beings devoted to you, all honor this auspicious city.
पुरं राष्ट्रं समृद्धं वै धनधान्यसमाकुलम्। तस्माद्गच्छस्व कौन्तेय भ्रातृभिः सहितोऽनघ
The city and kingdom are prosperous, filled with wealth and grain; therefore, O son of Kunti, go there with your brothers, O sinless one.
प्रतिगृह्य तु तद्वाक्यं तस्मै सर्वे प्रणम्य च। रथैर्नागैर्हयैश्चापि सहितास्तु पदातिभिः
Having accepted those words, and having bowed to him, they all, together with chariots, elephants, horses, and also foot soldiers, set out.
प्रतस्थिरे ततो घोषसंयुक्तैः स्यन्दनैर्वरैः। तान्दृष्ट्वा नागराः सर्वे भक्त्या चैव प्रतस्थिरे
Then they departed with excellent chariots adorned with musical instruments; seeing them, all the citizens also set out with devotion.
गच्छतः पाण्डवैः सार्धं दृष्ट्वा नागपुरालयात्। पाण्डवैः सहिता गन्तुं नार्हतेति च नागरान्
As the Pandavas departed together, the citizens of Nagapura, seeing them, said that they should not go with the Pandavas.
