हैमानि शय्यासनबाजनानि द्रव्याणि चान्यानि च गोधनानि। पृथक्पृथक्वैव ददौ स कोटिं पाञ्चालराजः परमप्रहृष्टः
He gave golden beds, seats, vessels, other goods, and herds of cattle; separately, the king of the Pāñcālas gave a crore, exceedingly delighted.
शिबिकानां शतं पूर्णं वाहान्पञ्चशतं नरान्
A hundred palanquins fully equipped, and five hundred men to carry them.
एवमेतानि पाञ्चालो जन्यार्थे प्रददौ धनम्। हरणं चापि पाञ्चाल्या ज्ञातिदेयं च सोमकः
Thus, the Pāñcāla gave these riches for the sake of kinship; and Somaka gave the abduction and gifts to the relatives of Pāñcālī.
धृष्टद्युम्नो ययौ तत्र भगिनीं गृह्य भारत। नानद्यमानो बहुशस्तूर्यघोषैः सहस्रशः
Dhṛṣṭadyumna went there, taking his sister, O Bhārata, accompanied by the sound of many instruments, thousands in number.
श्रुत्वा चोपस्थितान्वीरान्धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः। प्रतिग्रहाय पाण्डूनां प्रेषयामास कौरवान्
Hearing that the heroes had arrived, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, son of Ambikā, sent the Kauravas to receive the Pāṇḍavas.
विकर्णं च महेष्वासं चित्रसेनं च भारत। द्रोणं च परमेष्वासं गौतमं कृपमेव च
He sent Vikarṇa, the mighty archer, Citraseṇa, O Bhārata, Droṇa, the supreme archer, Gautama, and also Kṛpa.
तैस्तैः परिवृताः शूरैः शोभमाना महारथाः। नगरं हास्तिनपुरं शनैः प्रविविशुस्तदा
Surrounded by those valiant heroes, the great chariot-warriors, they then entered the city of Hastinapura, shining in their splendor, slowly.
पाण्डवानागताञ्छ्रुत्वा नागरास्तु कुतूहलात्। मण्डयाञ्चक्रिरे तत्र नगरं नागसाह्वयम्
Hearing that the Pandavas had arrived, the citizens, out of curiosity, adorned the city called Nagasahvaya.
मुक्तपुष्पावकीर्णं तु जलसिक्तं तु सर्वतः। धूपितं दिव्यधूपेन मङ्गलैश्चाभिसंवृतम्
The city was strewn everywhere with loose flowers, sprinkled with water, perfumed with divine incense, and covered with auspicious items.
पताकोच्छ्रितमाल्यं च पुरमप्रतिमं बभौ। शङ्खभेरीनिनादैश्च नानावादित्रनिस्वनैः
The incomparable city shone, adorned with raised banners and garlands, and resounded with the blaring of conches and drums, and the sounds of various instruments.
कौतूहलेन नगरं पूर्यमाणमिवाभवत्। यत्र ते पुरुषव्याघ्राः शोकदुःखसमन्विताः
Out of excitement, the city seemed to be overflowing, as those tiger-like men, burdened with sorrow and grief, entered.
निर्गताश्च पुरात्पूर्वं धृतराष्ट्रप्रबाधिताः। पुनर्निवृत्ता दिष्ट्या वै सह मात्रा परन्तपाः
Those scorcher of foes, who had previously left the city, driven out by Dhritarashtra, now returned by good fortune, together with their mother.
इत्येवमीरिता वाचो जनैः प्रियचिकीर्षुभिः।' तत उच्चावचा वाचः प्रियाः सर्वत्र भारत
Thus, words were spoken by people wishing to show affection; then, O Bharata, everywhere there arose various pleasant remarks.
अयं स पुरुषव्याघ्रः पुनरायाति धर्मवित्
Here comes that tiger among men, the knower of righteousness, returning once more.
यो नः स्वानिव दायादान्धर्मेण परिरक्षति। अद्य पाण्डुर्महाराजो वनादिव मनःप्रियम्
He who protects our rightful heirs as if they were his own, by righteousness—today, King Pandu, dear to our hearts, has come from the forest.
आगतश्चैवमस्माकं चिकीर्षन्नात्र संशयः। किं न्वद्य सुकृतं कर्म सर्वेषां नः प्रियं परम्
He has come to us thus, wishing to do good—there is no doubt; what meritorious deed have we all done today, that brings us such great joy?
यन्नः कुन्तीसुता वीरा भर्तारः पुनरागताः। यदि दत्तं यदि हुतं यदि वाप्यस्ति नस्तपः। तेन तिष्ठन्तु नगरे पाण्डवाः शरदां शतम्
Because the heroic sons of Kunti, our lords, have returned—if we have given, if we have offered, or if we have any austerity—may the Pandavas dwell in the city for a hundred autumns by that merit.
ततस्ते धृतराष्ट्रस्य भीष्मस्य च महात्मनः। अन्येषां च तदर्हाणां चक्रुः पादाभिवन्दनम्
Then they paid homage at the feet of Dhritarashtra, of the great-souled Bhishma, and of the other elders who deserved it.
पृष्टास्तु कुशलप्रश्नं सर्वेण नगरेण ते। समाविशन्त वेश्मानि धृतराष्ट्रस्य शासनात्
After being asked about their welfare by all the people in the city, they entered their homes, by the command of Dhritarashtra.
दुर्योधनस्य महिषी काशिराजसुता तदा। धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राणां वधूभिः सहिता तदा
Then, the queen of Duryodhana, daughter of the king of Kashi, together with the wives of Dhritarashtra's sons,
पाञ्चालीं प्रतिजग्राह साध्वीं श्रियमिवापराम्। पूजयामास पूजार्हां शचीदेवीमिवागताम्
Received the virtuous Panchali, as if she were another goddess of fortune, and honored her, worthy of honor, like Shachi herself come in person.
ववन्दे तत्र गान्धारीं कृष्णया सह माधवी। आशिषश्च प्रयुक्त्वा तु पाञ्चालीं परिषस्वजे
There, Madhavi, together with Krishna, bowed to Gandhari; after offering blessings, she embraced Panchali.
परिष्वज्यैव गान्धारी कृष्णां कमललोचनाम्। पुत्राणां मम पाञ्चाली मृत्युरेवेत्यमन्यत
Gandhari, embracing Krishna of lotus eyes, thought, 'Panchali is truly the death of my sons.'
संचिन्त्य विदुरं प्राह युक्तितः सुबलात्मजा। कुन्तीं राजसुतां क्षत्तः सवधूं सपरिच्छदाम्
Thinking thus, the daughter of Subala, with due consideration, said to Vidura: 'O Kshatta, bring Kunti, the royal lady, with her daughters-in-law and attendants.'
पाण्डोर्निवेशनं शीघ्रं नीयतां यदि रोचते। करणेन मुहूर्तेन नक्षत्रेण शुभे तिथौ
If it pleases you, let the dwelling of the sons of Pandu be quickly arranged, with all the necessary rites, at an auspicious star and on a favorable lunar day.
यथा सुखं तथा कुन्ती रंस्यते स्वगृहे सुतैः। तथेत्येव तदा क्षत्ता कारयामास तत्तथा
So that Kunti may enjoy happiness in her own house with her sons, the steward immediately carried out the arrangements as instructed.
पूजयामासुरत्यर्थं बान्धवाः पाण्डवांस्तदा। नागराः श्रेणिमुख्याश्च पूजयन्ति स्म पाण्डवान्
At that time, the relatives honored the Pandavas greatly; the citizens and the leaders of the guilds also paid their respects to the Pandavas.
भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपः कर्णो बाह्लीकः ससुतस्तदा। शासनाद्धृतराष्ट्रस्य अकुर्वन्नतिथिक्रियाम्
Then Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Karna, and Bahlika with his son, by the command of Dhritarashtra, performed the duties of hospitality.
एवं विहरतां तेषां पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम्। नेता सर्वस्य कार्यस्य विदुरो राजशासनात्
While those great-souled Pandavas were thus enjoying themselves, Vidura, by royal command, directed all their affairs.
विश्रान्तास्ते महात्मानः कंचित्कालं सकेशवाः। आहूता धृतराष्ट्रेण राज्ञा शान्तनवेन च
Those great souls, along with Keshava, rested there for some time, having been summoned by King Dhritarashtra and the son of Shantanu.
