धृतराष्ट्रश्च पाञ्चाल्य त्वया संबन्धमेयिवान्। कृतार्थं मन्यतेत्मानं तथा सर्वेऽपि कौरवाः
Dhritarashtra, O Panchali, has become related to you; he considers himself fulfilled, and so do all the Kauravas.
न तथा राज्यसंप्राप्तिस्तेषां प्रीतिकरी मता। यथा संबन्धकं प्राप्य यज्ञसेन त्वया सह
The attainment of the kingdom is not regarded by them as bringing as much joy as the alliance with you, O Yajnasena.
एतद्विदित्वा तु भवान्प्रस्थापयतु पाण्डवान्। द्रष्टुं हि पाण्डुपुत्रांश्च त्वरन्ति कुरवो भृशम्
Knowing this, you should send the Pandavas forth; for the Kurus are very eager to see the sons of Pandu.
विप्रोषिता दीर्घकालमेते चापि नरर्षभाः। उत्सुका नगरं द्रष्टुं भविष्यन्ति तथा पृथा
These noble men have been away for a long time; they, as well as Pritha, will be eager to see the city.
कृष्णामपि च पाञ्चालीं सर्वाः कुरुवरस्त्रियः। द्रष्टुकामाः प्रतीक्ष्ते पुरं च विषयाश्च नः
All the women of the Kuru clan are waiting to see Krishna, the Panchali, and our city and lands await her as well.
स भवान्पाण्डुपुत्राणामाज्ञापयतु मा चिरम्। गमनं सहदाराणामेतदत्र मतं मम
Therefore, you should command the Pandavas, without delay, to depart together with their wives; this is my opinion here.
निसृष्टेषु त्वया राजन्पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। ततोऽहं प्रेषयिष्यामि धृतराष्ट्रस्य शीघ्रगान्। आगमिष्यन्ति कौन्तेयाः कुन्ती च सह कृष्णया
Once you have sent forth the great-souled Pandavas, O King, I will then dispatch swift messengers to Dhritarashtra; the sons of Kunti will come, along with Kunti and Krishna.
एवमेतन्महाप्राज्ञ यथात्थ विदुराद्य माम्। ममापि परमो हर्षः संबन्धेऽस्मिन्कृते प्रभो
So it is, O wise Vidura, as you have said to me today; I too feel great joy at this alliance, O Lord.
गमनं चापि युक्तं स्याद्दृढमेषां महात्मनाम्। न तु तावन्मया युक्तमेतद्वक्तुं स्वयं गिरा
The departure would indeed be proper and firm for these great souls; but it is not fitting for me to speak of this myself.
यदा तु मन्यते वीरः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। भीमसेनार्जुनौ चैव यमौ च पुरुषर्षभौ
When the heroic Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, and Bhimasena, Arjuna, and the two sons of Madri, those foremost men, consider it right,
रामकृष्णौ च धर्मज्ञौ तदा गच्छन्तु पाण्डवाः। एतौ हि पुरुषव्याघ्रावेषां प्रियहिते रतौ
And when Rama and Krishna, both righteous, agree, then let the Pandavas depart; for these two tigers among men are devoted to their welfare and happiness.
परवन्तो वयं राजंस्त्वयि सर्वे सहानुगाः। यथा वक्ष्यसि नः प्रीत्या तत्करिष्यामहे वयम्
We are all dependent on you, O King, and follow you; whatever you say to us with affection, that we will do.
ततोऽब्रवीद्वासुदेवो गमनं रोचते मम। यथा वा मन्यते राजा द्रुपदः सर्वधर्मवित्
Then Vasudeva spoke: 'I am pleased with the departure; as the king Drupada, knower of all dharma, thinks fit.'
यथैव मन्यते वीरो दाशार्हः पुरुषोत्तमः। प्राप्तकालं महाबाहुः सा बुद्धिर्निश्चिता मम
As the heroic Dasharha, best among men, mighty-armed, considers timely, so is my firm decision.
यथैव हि महाभागाः कौन्तेया मम सांप्रतम्। तथैव वासुदेवस्य पाण्डुपुत्रा न संशयः
Just as the blessed sons of Kunti are mine at this moment, so are the Pandavas to Vasudeva, without doubt.
न तद्ध्यायति कौन्तेयः पाण्डुपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। यथैषां पुरुषव्याघ्रः श्रेयो ध्यायति केशवः
Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, does not contemplate as much as that tiger among men, Keshava, contemplates their welfare.
पृथायास्तु ततो वेश्म प्रविवेश महामतिः। पादौ स्पृष्ट्वा पृथायास्तु शिरसा च महीं गतः
Then the wise one entered Pritha's dwelling, touched her feet, and bowed his head to the earth before her.
दृष्ट्वा तु देवरं कुन्ती शुशोच च मुहुर्मुहुः
Seeing her brother-in-law, Kunti grieved again and again.
त्वत्प्रसादाज्जतुगृहे मृताः प्रत्यागतास्तथा। कूर्मी चिन्तयते पुत्रान्यत्र वा तत्र संमता
By your favor, those who died in the lac house have returned; just as a turtle thinks of her children, so too is this considered.
चिन्तया वर्धिताः पुत्रा यथा कुशलिनस्तथा। तव पुत्रास्तु जीवन्ति त्वद्भक्त्या भरतर्षभ
The children, raised with care, are safe; your sons live by your devotion, O best of Bharatas.
यथा परभृतः पुत्रानरिष्टा वर्धयेत्सदा। तथैव पुत्रास्तु मम त्वया तात सुरक्षिताः
As a foster bird always raises her young unharmed, so too, O father, my sons have been protected by you.
क्लेशास्तु बहवः प्राप्तास्तथा प्राणान्तिका मया। अतः परं न जानामि कर्तव्यं ज्ञातुमर्हसि
Many hardships have come to me, even those threatening life; beyond this, I do not know what should be done—you ought to know.
न विनश्यन्ति लोकेषु तव पुत्रा महाबलाः। अचिरेणैव कालेन स्वराज्यस्था भवन्ति ते
Your mighty sons will not perish in the world; in a short time, they will stand in their own kingdom.
बान्धवैः सहिताः सर्वे न शोकं कुरु माधवि
All together with their kin, do not grieve, O Mādhavi.
पाण्डवाश्चैव कृष्णश्च विदुरश्च महामतिः। आदाय द्रौपदीं कृष्णां कुन्तीं चैव यशस्विनीम्
The Pāṇḍavas, Kṛṣṇa, and wise Vidura, taking Draupadī, the noble Kṛṣṇā, and Kuntī of great fame,
सविहारं सुखं जग्मुर्नगरं नागसाह्वयम्। `सुवर्णकक्ष्याग्रैवेयान्सुवर्णाङ्कुशभूषितान्
Went joyfully to the city called Nāgasāhvaya, with golden chambers and golden elephant goads.
जाम्बूनदपरिष्कारान्प्रभिन्नकरटामुखान्। अधिष्ठितान्महामात्रैः सर्वशस्त्रसमन्वितान्
Adorned with gold, with broken jar mouths, occupied by great officers, all equipped with weapons.
सहस्रं प्रददौ राजा गजानां वरवर्मिणाम्। रथानां च सहस्रं वै सुवर्णमणिचित्रितम्
The king gave a thousand elephants with splendid armor, and a thousand chariots decorated with gold and jewels.
चतुर्युजां भानुमच्च पञ्चानां प्रददौ तदा। सुवर्णपरिबर्हाणां वरचामरमालिनाम्
He gave five radiant four-horse chariots, adorned with gold, with excellent fans and garlands.
जात्यश्वानां च पञ्चाशत्सहस्रं प्रददौ नृपः। दासीनामयुतं राजा प्रददौ वरभूषणम्। ततः सहस्रं दासानां प्रददौ वरधन्वनाम्
The king gave fifty thousand thoroughbred horses, and ten thousand maidservants with fine ornaments; then a thousand servants with splendid bows.
