मन्त्रिणस्ते न च श्रेयः प्रपश्यन्ति विशेषतः। अथ ते हृदये राजन्विशेषः स्वेषु वर्तते। अन्तरस्थं विवृण्वानाः श्रेयः कुर्युर्न ते ध्रुवम्
Your counselors do not especially perceive what is best; and if, O King, there is any distinction in their hearts toward their own, even when they reveal what is hidden, they would not surely act for your welfare.
एतदर्थमिमौ राजन्महात्मानौ महाद्युती। नोचतुर्विवृतं किंचिन्न ह्येष तव निश्चयः
For this reason, O King, these two great-souled and illustrious men have not disclosed anything openly, for this is not your settled decision.
यच्चाप्यशक्यतां तेषामाहतुः पुरुषर्षभौ। तत्तथा पुरुषव्याघ्र तव तद्भद्रमस्तु ते
And whatever inability those two best of men have spoken about, let it be so, O tiger among men; may it bring you auspiciousness.
कथं हि पाण्डवः श्रीमान्सव्यसाची धनञ्जयः। शक्यो विजेतुं संग्रामे राजन्मघवतापि हि
How indeed could the glorious Pandava, Savyasachi Dhananjaya, be conquered in battle, O King, even by Maghavan himself?
भीमसेनो महाबाहुर्नागायुतबलो महान्। राक्षसानां भयकरो बाहुशाली महाबलः
Bhimasena, mighty-armed, possessing the strength of ten thousand elephants, is a terror to the Rakshasas, powerful and strong of arm.
हिडिम्बो निहतो येन बाहुयुद्धेन भारत। यो रावणसमो युद्धे तथा च बकराक्षसः
It was he who slew Hidimba in hand-to-hand combat, O Bharata, who was equal to Ravana in battle, and likewise the Rakshasa Baka.
स युध्यमानो राजेन्द्र भीमो भीमपराक्रमः।' कथं स्म युधि शक्येत विजेतुममरैरपि
That Bhima, O king, whose valor is formidable, fighting in battle—how could even the immortals hope to defeat him?
तथैव कृतिनौ युद्धे यमौ यमसुताविव। कथं विजेतुं शक्यौ तौ रणे जीवितुमिच्छता
Likewise, in battle, the two sons of Yama are skilled, like the sons of Yama himself; how could anyone wishing to live hope to conquer them in war?
यस्मिन्धृतिरनुक्रोशः क्षमा सत्यं पराक्रमः। नित्यानि पाण्डवे ज्येष्ठे स जीयेत रणे कथम्
In whom are steadfastness, compassion, patience, truth, and valor always found—the eldest Pandava; how could he be vanquished in battle?
येषां पक्षधरो रामो येषां मन्त्री जनार्दनः। किं नु तैरजितं सङ्ख्ये येषां पक्षे च सात्यकिः
For whom Rama stands as ally, Janardana as counselor, and Satyaki on their side—how could such men be defeated in battle?
द्रुपदः श्वशुरो येषां येषां स्यालाश्च पार्षताः। धृष्टद्युम्नमुखा वीरा भ्रातरो द्रुपदात्मजाः
Drupada is their father-in-law, and the Parshatas their brothers-in-law; heroes led by Dhrishtadyumna, brothers born of Drupada.
चैद्यश्च येषां भ्राता च शिशुपालो महारथः।' सोऽशक्यतां च विज्ञाय तेषामग्रे च भारत। दायाद्यतां च धर्मेण सम्यक्तेषु समाचर
And the Chedi king, Shishupala, their brother, a great chariot-warrior—knowing their invincibility, O Bharata, act righteously and properly towards them.
इदं निर्दिष्टमयशः पुरोचनकृतं महत्। तेषामनुग्रहेणाद्य राजन्प्रक्षालयात्मनः
This great disgrace, caused by Purochana, has been pointed out; today, out of compassion for them, O king, cleanse yourself.
तेषामनुग्रहश्चायं सर्वेषां चैव नः कुले। जीवितं च परं श्रेयः क्षत्रस्य च विवर्धनम्
This act of kindness towards them is also for the benefit of our whole lineage; life is the highest good, and it increases the glory of the Kshatriyas.
द्रुपदोऽपि महान्राजा कृतवैरश्च नः पुरा। तस्य संग्रहणं राजन्स्वपक्षस्य विवर्धनम्
Drupada, the great king, was formerly our enemy; winning him over, O king, will strengthen your own side.
बलवन्तश्च दाशार्हा बहवश्च विशांपते। यतः कृष्णस्ततः सर्वे यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः
The Dasharhas are powerful, and many, O lord of men; wherever Krishna is, there are all, and wherever Krishna is, there is victory.
यच्च साम्नैव शक्येत कार्यं साधयितुं नृप। को दैवशप्तस्तत्कार्यं विग्रहेण समाचरेत्
And whatever can be accomplished by conciliation, O king, who, cursed by fate, would seek to achieve it through conflict?
श्रुत्वा च जीवतः पार्थान्पौरजानपदा जनाः। बलवद्दर्शने हृष्टास्तेषां राजन्प्रियं कुरु
Hearing that the Parthas are alive, the people of the cities and countryside rejoice at their sight; do what is pleasing to them, O king.
दुर्योधनश्च कर्णश्च शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः। अधर्मयुक्ता दुष्प्रज्ञा बाला मैषां वचः कृथाः
Duryodhana, Karna, and Shakuni, son of Subala, are unrighteous, foolish, and childish; do not follow their counsel.
उक्तमेतत्पुरा राजन्मया गुणवतस्तव। दुर्योधनापराधेन प्रजेयं वै विनङ्क्ष्यति
This has been spoken before, O king, by me, for your benefit; because of Duryodhana's offense, the people will perish.
भीष्मः शान्तनवो विद्वान्द्रोणश्च भगवानृषिः। `हितं च परमं सत्यमब्रूतां वाक्यमुत्तमम्।' हितं च परमं वाक्यं त्वं च सत्यं ब्रवीषि माम्
Bhishma, son of Shantanu, wise, and Drona, the venerable sage, spoke words that were most beneficial and true; you also speak truth to me.
यथैव पाण्डोस्ते वीराः कुन्तीपुत्रा महारथाः। तथैव धर्मतः सर्वे मम पुत्रा न संशयः
Just as the sons of Kunti, the Pandavas, are heroic and great chariot-warriors, so too, by righteousness, are all my sons—there is no doubt.
यथैव मम पुत्राणामिदं राज्यं विधीयते। तथैव पाण्डुपुत्राणामिदं राज्यं न संशयः
Just as this kingdom is established for my sons, so too is this kingdom for the sons of Pandu—of this there is no doubt.
क्षत्तरानय गच्छैतान्सह मात्रा सुसत्कृतान्। तया च देवरूपिण्या कृष्णया सह भारत
O Kshatta, go and bring them here, together with their mother, honored well, and with Krishna, who has the form of a goddess, O Bharata.
दिष्ट्या जीवन्ति ते पार्था दिष्ट्या जीवति सा पृथा। दिष्ट्या द्रुपदकन्यां च लब्धवन्तो महारथाः
By fortune, the sons of Pritha live; by fortune, Kunti herself lives; by fortune, those great chariot-warriors have obtained the daughter of Drupada.
दिष्ट्या वर्धामहे सर्वे दिष्ट्या शान्तः पुरोचनः। दिष्ट्या मम परं दुःखमपनीतं महाद्युते
By fortune, we all prosper; by fortune, Purochana is pacified; by fortune, my great sorrow has been removed, O mighty one.
एवमुक्तस्ततः क्षत्ता रथमारुह्य शीघ्रगम्। आगात्कतिपयाहोभिः पाञ्चालान्राजधर्मवित्
Thus addressed, the wise Kshatta mounted a swift chariot and, within a few days, reached the Panchalas, versed in royal duty.
ततो जगाम विदुरो धृतराष्ट्रस्य शासनात्। सकाशं यज्ञसेनस्य पाण्डवानां च भारत
Then Vidura, by Dhritarashtra’s command, went to the presence of Yajnasena and the Pandavas, O Bharata.
समुपादाय रत्नानि वसूनि विविधानि च। द्रौपद्याः पाण्डवानां च यज्ञसेनस्य चैव ह
He brought with him jewels and various kinds of wealth for Draupadi, the Pandavas, and Yajnasena as well.
तत्र गत्वा स धर्मज्ञः सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः। द्रुपदं न्यायतो राजन्संयुक्तमुपतस्थिवान्
There, having arrived, that knower of righteousness, expert in all the scriptures, approached King Drupada properly and with due decorum.
