तैः शरैराहतं कर्णं ध्वजयष्टिमुपाश्रितम्। अपोवाह रथाच्चाशु सूतः परपुरंजयम्
Struck by those arrows, Karṇa, clinging to his banner staff, was quickly driven away from his chariot by his charioteer, the conqueror of enemy cities.
ततः पराजिते कर्णे धार्तराष्ट्रान्महाभयम्। विवेश समुदग्रांश्च पाण्डवान्प्रसमीक्ष्य तु
With Karṇa defeated, great fear entered the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, while the Pāṇḍavas, with their growing strength, looked on.
तत्प्रकम्पितमत्यर्थं तद्दृष्ट्वा सौबलो बलम्। गिरा मधुरया चापि समाश्वासयतासकृत्
Seeing his force greatly shaken, Saubala, with gentle words, repeatedly encouraged them.
धार्तराष्ट्रैस्ततः सर्वैर्दुर्योधनपुरःसरैः। धृतं तत्पुनरेवासीद्बलं पार्थप्रपीडितम्
Then all the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, led by Duryodhana, rallied and held their force again, though it was pressed hard by the Pārthas.
ततो दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा भीमो भीमपराक्रमः। अक्रुध्यत्स महाबाहुरगारं जातुषं स्मरन्
Then Bhīma, of terrible might, seeing Duryodhana, grew angry, remembering the house of lac.
ततः संग्रामशिरसि ददर्श विपुलद्रुमम्। आयामभूतं तिष्ठन्तं स्कन्धपञ्चाशदुन्नतम्
At the height of battle, he saw a great tree standing tall, with fifty branches rising high, broad and massive.
महास्कन्धं महोत्सेधं शक्रध्वजमिवोच्छ्रितम्। तमुत्पाठ्य च पाणिभ्यामुद्यम्य चरणावपि
With huge trunk and great height, like Indra's banner raised up, he uprooted it with his hands and lifted it, even with his feet.
अभिपेदे परान्सङ्ख्ये वज्रपाणिरिवासुरान्। भीमसेनभयार्तानि फल्गुनाभिहतानि च
He rushed at the enemy in battle like Vajrapāṇi against the Asuras, while the foes, terrified by Bhīmasena and struck by Arjuna, fled.
न शेकुस्तान्यनीकानि धार्तराष्ट्राण्युदीक्षितुम्। तानि संभ्रान्तयोधानि श्रान्तवाजिगजानि च
The Dhārtarāṣṭra troops, with their warriors confused and their horses and elephants exhausted, could not even look at them.
दिशः प्राकालयद्भीमो दिवीवाभ्राणि मारुतः। तान्निवृत्तान्निरानन्दान्नरवारणवाजिनः
Bhīma scattered them in all directions, like the wind dispersing clouds in the sky; those men, elephants, and horses, joyless, turned back.
नानुसस्रुर्न चाजघ्नुर्नोचुः किंचिच्च दारुणम्। स्वमेव शिबिरं जग्मुः क्षत्रियाः शरविक्षताः
They did not pursue, nor did they strike, nor utter any harsh word; the Kṣatriyas, wounded by arrows, went to their own camp.
परेऽप्यभिययुर्हृष्टाः पुरं पौरसुखावहाः। मुहूर्तमभवद्युद्धं तेषां वै पाण्डवैः सह
The others, too, rejoicing, entered the city, bringing happiness to its people; their battle with the Pāṇḍavas lasted only a moment.
यावत्तद्युद्धमभवन्महद्देवासुरोपमम्। तावदेवाभवच्छान्तं निवृत्ता वै महारथाः
As long as that great battle, like one between gods and asuras, lasted, so long did it continue; then it ceased, and the mighty warriors withdrew.
सुव्रतं चक्रिरे सर्वे सुवृतामब्रुवन्वधूम्। कृतार्थं द्रुपदं चोचुर्धृष्टद्युम्नं च पार्षतम्
All praised the virtuous conduct, and spoke approvingly of the bride; they declared Drupada and Dhrishtadyumna to have achieved their purpose.
शकुनिः सिन्धुराजश्च कर्णदुर्योधनावपि। तेषां तदाभवद्दुःखं हृदि वाचा तु नाब्रुवन्
Shakuni, the king of Sindhu, Karna, and Duryodhana—grief arose in their hearts, but they did not express it in words.
ततः प्रयाता राजानः सर्व एव यथागतम्। धार्तराष्ट्रा हि ते सर्वे गता नागपुरं तदा
Then all the kings departed as they had come; all the sons of Dhritarashtra went to Nagapura at that time.
प्रागेव पूर्निरोधात्तु पाण्डवैरश्वसादिनः। प्रेषिता गच्छतारिष्टानस्मानाख्यात शौरये
Even before the enclosure was cleared, the Pandavas, mounted on horses, sent messengers ahead to inform Shouri of the events.
तेऽचिरेणैव कालेन संप्राप्ता यादवीं पुरीम्। ऊचुः संकर्षणोपेन्द्रौ वचनं वचनक्षमौ
In a short time, they reached the city of the Yadavas and spoke words to Sankarshana and Upendra, who were patient in speech.
कुशलं पाण्डवाः सर्वानाहुः स्मान्धकवृष्णयः। आत्मनश्चाहतानाहुर्विमुक्ताञ्जातुषाद्गृहात्
The Andhaka-Vrishnis asked after the welfare of all the Pandavas, and inquired about themselves, freed from the house of lac.
समाजे द्रौपदीं लब्धामाहू राजीवलोचनाम्। आत्मनः सदृशीं सर्वैः शीलवृत्तसमाधिभिः
In the assembly, they spoke of Draupadi, lotus-eyed, won as a bride, worthy of themselves in every way—by all, for her character, conduct, and composure.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं कृष्णस्तानुवाचोत्तरं वचः। सर्वमेतदहं जाने वधात्तस्य तु रक्षसः
Hearing these words, Krishna replied to them: 'I know all this, including the slaying of that Rakshasa.'
तत उद्योजयामास माधवश्चतुरङ्गिणीम्। सेनामुपानयत्तूर्णं पाञ्चालनगरीं प्रति
Then Madhava ordered the fourfold army to be made ready, and quickly led it towards the city of the Panchalas.
ततः संकर्षणश्चैव केशवश्च महाबलः। यादवैः सह सर्वैश्च पाण्डवानभिजग्मतुः
Then Sankarshana and mighty Kesava, together with all the Yadavas, went to the Pandavas.
पितृष्वसारं संपूज्य नत्वा चैव तु यादवीम्। द्रौपदीं भूषणैः शुभ्रैर्भूषयित्वा यथाविधि
Honoring their paternal aunt and bowing to the Yadavi, they adorned Draupadi with splendid ornaments, as was proper.
पाण्डवान्हर्षयित्वा तु पूजयामासतुश्च तान्। न्यायतः पूजितौ राज्ञा द्रुपदेन महात्मना
After gladdening the Pandavas, they honored them as well; and, in turn, they were duly honored by the great-souled king Drupada.
यादवाः पूजिताः सर्वे पाण्डवैश्च महात्मभिः। रेमिरे पाण्डवैः सार्धं ते पाञ्चालपुरे तदा
All the Yadavas were honored by the noble Pandavas, and they rejoiced together with the Pandavas in the city of the Panchalas at that time.
वृत्ते स्वयंवरे चैव राजानः सर्व एव ते। यथागतं विप्रजग्मुर्विदित्वा पाण्डवान्वृतान्
When the svayamvara was concluded, all the kings departed as they had come, having learned that the Pandavas had been chosen.
अथ दुर्योधनो राजा विमना भ्रातृभिः सह। अश्वत्थाम्ना मातुलेन कर्णेन च कृपेण च
Then King Duryodhana, dejected, departed with his brothers, Ashvatthama, his maternal uncle, Karna, and Kripa.
विनिवृत्तो वृतं दृष्ट्वा द्रौपद्या श्वेतवाहनम्। तं तु दुःशासनोऽव्रीडो मन्दंमन्दमिवाब्रवीत्
Having seen the white-horsed one chosen by Draupadi, Duhshasana, unashamed, spoke slowly to him.
यद्यसौ ब्राह्मणो न स्याद्विन्देत द्रौपदीं न सः। न हि तं तत्त्वतो राजन्वेद कश्चिद्धनंजयम्
'If he were not a Brahmin, he would not have won Draupadi; for, O king, no one truly knows Dhananjaya.'
