रूपलक्षणसंपन्नां शीलाचारसमन्विताम्। द्रौपदीमवदत्प्रेम्णा पृथाशीर्वचनं स्नुषाम्
Pṛthā, with affection, spoke words of blessing to her daughter-in-law Draupadī, who was endowed with beauty, auspicious marks, and good conduct.
यथेन्द्राणी हरिहये स्वाहा चैव विभावसौ। रोहिणी च यथा सोमे दमयन्ती यथा नले
Just as Śacī with Indra, Svāhā with Agni, Rohiṇī with Soma, and Damayantī with Nala—
यथा वैश्रवणे भद्रा वसिष्ठे चाप्यरुन्धती। यथा नारायणे लक्ष्मीस्तथा त्वं भव भर्तृषु
As Bhadrā with Vaiśravaṇa, Arundhatī with Vasiṣṭha, and Lakṣmī with Nārāyaṇa—so may you be with your husbands.
जीवसूर्वीरसूर्भद्रे बहुसौख्यसमन्विता। सुभगा भोगसंपन्ना यज्ञपत्नी पतिव्रता
O blessed one, may you bear living and heroic sons, be endowed with much happiness, fortunate, rich in enjoyments, a sacrificer's wife, and devoted to your husbands.
अतिथीनागतान्साधून्वृद्दान्बालांस्तथा गुरून्। पूजयन्त्या यथान्यायं शश्वद्गच्छन्तु ते समाः
By honoring guests, newcomers, the virtuous, elders, children, and teachers as is proper, may your years always pass well.
कुरुजाङ्गलमुख्येषु राष्ट्रेषु नगरेषु च। अनु त्वमभिषिच्यस्व नृपतिं धर्मवत्सला
In the foremost regions, kingdoms, and cities of Kurujāṅgala, may you, devoted to righteousness, anoint your husband as king.
पतिभिर्निर्जितामुर्वीं विक्रमेण महाबलैः। कुरु ब्राह्मणसात्सर्वामश्वमेधे महाक्रतौ
When the mighty sons conquer the earth by their valor, may you, at the great Aśvamedha sacrifice, give all to the Brāhmaṇas.
पृथिव्यां यानि रत्नानि गुणवन्ति गुणान्विते। तान्याप्नुहि त्वं कल्याणि सुखिनी शरदां शतं
Whatever jewels on earth are endowed with virtue and excellence, may you, O blessed one, obtain them and live happily for a hundred autumns.
यथा च त्वाऽभिनन्दामि वध्वद्य क्षौमसंवृताम्। तथा भूयोऽभिनन्दिष्ये जातपुत्रां गुणान्वितां
As I now rejoice in you, veiled in linen as a bride, so shall I rejoice again when you, endowed with virtues, have borne sons.
ततस्तु कृतदारेभ्यः पाण्डुभ्यः प्राहिणोद्धरिः। वैदूर्यमणिचित्राणि हैमान्याभरणानि च
Then Hari sent to the Pāṇḍavas, who had taken wives, ornaments of gold and adorned with beryl and gems.
वासांसि च महार्हाणि नानादेश्यानि माधवः। कम्बलाजिनरत्नानि स्पर्शवन्ति शुभानि च
Mādhava also gave them costly garments from various lands, blankets, furs, precious gems, and fine, soft items.
शयनासनयानानि विविधानि महान्ति च। वैदूर्यवज्रचित्राणि शतशो भाजनानि च
He gave them many and various great couches, seats, and vehicles, vessels inlaid with beryl and diamonds by the hundreds.
रूपयौवनदाक्षिण्यैरुपेताश्च स्वलङ्कृताः। प्रेष्याः संप्रददौ कृष्णो नानादेश्याः स्वलङ्कृताः
Kṛṣṇa gave them maidservants from various lands, adorned and endowed with beauty, youth, and kindness.
गजान्विनीतान्भद्रांश्च सदश्वांश्च स्वलङ्कृतान्। रथांश्च दान्तान्सौवर्णैः शुभ्रैः पट्टैरलङ्कृतान्
He gave them well-trained elephants, fine horses, and chariots, all adorned, the chariots decked with gold and splendid cloths.
कोटिशश्च सुवर्णं च तेषामकृतकं तथा। वीथीकृतममेयात्मा प्राहिणोन्मधुसूदनः
Madhusudana, of immeasurable soul, sent countless pieces of unalloyed gold, arranged in rows, to them.
तत्सर्वं प्रतिजग्राह धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। मुदा परमया युक्तो गोविन्दप्रियकाम्यया
King Yudhishthira, devoted to righteousness, accepted all that with great joy, desiring to please Govinda.
ततो राज्ञां चैरराप्तैः प्रवृत्तिरुपनीयत। पाण्डवैरुपसंपन्ना द्रौपदी पतिभिः शुभा
Then, the proceedings obtained by the kings through spies were brought forth; Draupadi, auspicious, was united with the Pandavas as husbands.
येन तद्धनुरादाय लक्ष्यं विद्धं महात्मना। सोऽर्जुनो जयतां श्रेष्ठो महाबाणधनुर्धरः
It was by him, the great-souled one, that the target was pierced after taking up that bow—he is Arjuna, foremost among conquerors, wielder of the mighty bow.
यः शल्यं मद्रराजं वै प्रोत्क्षिप्यापातयद्बली। त्रासयामास संक्रुद्धो वृक्षेण पुरुषान्रणे
He who, strong and enraged, uprooted and struck down King Shalya of Madra, frightening men in battle with a tree—
न चास्य संभ्रमः कश्चिदासीत्तत्र महात्मनः। स भीमो भीमसंस्पर्शः शत्रुसेनाङ्गपातनः
And that great-souled one felt no agitation there; he is Bhima, whose touch is terrible, who casts down the limbs of enemy armies.
योऽसावत्यक्रमीद्युध्यन्युद्धे दुर्योधनं तथा। स राजा पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः पुण्यभाग्बुद्धिवर्धनः
He who, fighting, did not transgress Duryodhana in battle—he is that king, the foremost Pandava, blessed with virtue and wisdom.
दुर्योधनस्यावरजैर्यौ युध्येतां प्रतीपवत्। तौ यमौ वृत्तसंपन्नौ संपन्नबलविक्रमौ
Those two, the virtuous and accomplished twins, equal in strength and valor, who opposed Duryodhana’s younger brothers in battle—
ब्रह्मरूपधराञ्श्रुत्वा प्रशान्तान्पाण्डुनन्दनान्। कौन्तेयान्मनुजेन्द्राणां विस्मयः समजायत
Hearing that the sons of Pandu, calm and possessing the form of Brahma, were present, the kings of men were struck with wonder.
पौरा हि सर्वे राजन्याः समपद्यन्त विस्मिताः।' सपुत्रा हि पुरा कुन्ती दग्धा जतुगृहे श्रुता
All the citizens and kings were amazed, for it was believed that Kunti and her sons had perished in the house of lac.
सर्वभूमिपतीनां च राष्ट्राणां च यशस्विनी।' पुनर्जातानिव च तांस्तेऽमन्यन्त नराधिपाः
The illustrious lady, and those kings of men, thought them as if born again among all the rulers and their realms.
धिगकुर्वंस्तदा भीष्मं धृतराष्ट्रं च कौरवम्। कर्मणाऽतिनृशंसेन पुरोचनकृतेन वै
Then they condemned Bhishma and the Kaurava Dhritarashtra for the exceedingly cruel act committed by Purocana.
धार्मिकान्वृत्तसंपन्नान्मातुः प्रियहिते रतान्। यदा तानीदृशान्पार्थानुत्सादयितुमिच्छति
When such sons of Pritha, righteous, accomplished in conduct, devoted to their mother’s welfare, are sought to be destroyed—
ततः स्वयंवरे वृत्ते धार्तराष्ट्राश्च भारत। मन्त्रयन्ति ततः सर्वे कर्णसौबलदूषिताः
Then, after the svayamvara had taken place, O Bharata, the sons of Dhritarashtra all took counsel, influenced by Karna and the son of Suvala.
कश्चिच्छत्रुः कर्शनीयः पीडनीयस्तथाऽपरः। उत्सादनीयाः कौन्तेयाः सर्वक्षत्रस्य मे मताः
One enemy must be weakened, another oppressed; in my view, the sons of Kunti must be destroyed for the sake of all Kshatriyas.
एवं पराजिताः सर्वे यदि यूयं गमिष्यथ। अकृत्वा संविदं कांचिन्मनस्तप्स्यत्यसंशयम्
If, thus defeated, you all depart without making any agreement, your minds will surely be troubled.
