Just as Krishna formerly said, 'Let the Blessed Lord not grant me many husbands,' yet the god replied, 'So be it, this boon is granted'—for the god knows the highest truth in this matter.
And if this has been ordained by Shankara, whether it is right or wrong, there is no fault of mine here. Let these men, for whom it is destined, take her hand as they desire, for Krishna is appointed to them.
This is not a custom among men in marriage; these are gods, and Draupadi is Lakshmi herself. By the merit of former deeds and the grace of the Lord of gods, she is the wife of the five Pandavas.
This marriage is ordained only for them, just as Draupadi is for the Pandavas; for other men and women, O king, this is not a dharma spoken of among men.
Then both Vyasa and Drupada came there, where Kunti was with her sons and Dhrishtadyumna, son of Prishata. Then Krishna Dvaipayana approached Yudhishthira.
Then the Blessed One said to the king of dharma: 'On this very auspicious day, O son of Pandu, when the moon attains conjunction with Pushya, take Krishna's hand first today.'
Having thus spoken to the king of dharma, he addressed Bhima and the others as well.
'Let the tigers among men take her hand in turn, with their own hands; thus have I seen all this before, O sinless ones.'
Then King Yajñasena, together with his son, joyfully approved all the splendid and abundant gifts that had been requested for the wedding. With his son and his relatives, he was delighted, and he summoned his daughter Kṛṣṇā, adorning her with many jewels.
Thereafter, all the king’s friends and counselors assembled, filled with great anticipation to witness the wedding, along with the foremost of the twice-born and the citizens, each according to their rank.
Then his palace, graced by the presence of distinguished guests, shone brilliantly; its vast courtyard was adorned with lotuses and water-lilies, and it was splendid with crowds of warriors and heaps of jewels, resembling the clear sky studded with pure stars.
Then the sons of the Kuru king, young and adorned with earrings, splendidly dressed in costly garments and anointed with sandalwood paste, having performed the ceremonial bath and auspicious rites, entered, resplendent.
Accompanied by Dhaumya, the family priest whose brilliance matched that of fire, and following the proper rites, all of them entered the assembly in order, like great bulls entering a joyful herd.
Then, having prepared everything, the priest versed in the Vedas offered oblations with mantras into the blazing sacred fire, and, bringing Yudhiṣṭhira forward, he seated him together with Kṛṣṇā, according to the ritual.
With their hands joined, the priest versed in the Vedas led them around the fire, and Yudhiṣṭhira, after satisfying the Brahmins with wealth, cows, and various jewels, performed the rites as prescribed.
Then, in the presence of the sacred fire, the king took the hand of Drupada’s daughter, while Dhaumya, reciting the proper mantras, performed the rites in the company of sages skilled in fire ceremonies.
Then flowers fell from the sky, and a gentle breeze blew, carrying a delightful fragrance. Thereafter, the royal priest, having obtained permission from the assembly, addressed Yudhiṣṭhira.
Having gathered all the Brahmins and the king’s friends, the great-souled priest, addressing the king with undiminished spirit, once again spoke meaningful words to that lord of men.
Now let the other sons of the king take the hand of the royal maiden, each in turn, as is proper. Drupada welcomed the sage and instructed him to do likewise among the Kurus.
With the approval of the priest and the king, the royal sons rejoiced. In turn, the other princes took the hand of the bride, each as prescribed.
Day after day, those great chariot-warriors, upholders of the Kuru lineage, appeared in their finest forms.
Then the divine sage spoke of a wondrous and extraordinary event, beyond human comprehension: that noble lady, slender-waisted, remained a maiden each day, even after each marriage.
To the eldest, she was as a wife; to the younger, as a devoted sister-in-law; and among the middle brothers, Pāñcālī maintained threefold relations with each of the three.
When the marriage was completed, Drupada gave abundant and excellent wealth to the great chariot-warriors: a hundred chariots adorned with gold, drawn by four horses, with golden yokes.
He also gave a hundred elephants with auspicious marks, a hundred mountain-like gold-crested steeds, and a hundred maidservants in the prime of youth, adorned with splendid garments, ornaments, and garlands.
Separately, he gave again wealth witnessed by fire to those of divine appearance, as well as garments and ornaments of great value, in keeping with his noble nature.
Then, after the marriage was performed, the mighty Pāṇḍavas, equal to Indra, rejoiced in the city of that king of the Pāñcālas, having obtained abundant wealth and jewels.
For Drupada, who had entered into alliance with the Pāṇḍavas, there was no fear whatsoever, not even from the gods, under any circumstance.
The noble ladies of great Drupada, approaching Kuntī, spoke her name aloud and touched her feet with their heads.
Kṛṣṇā, clad in fine linen, adorned with auspicious ornaments, having paid respects to her mothers-in-law, stood with joined palms, humble and reverent.
