ते नर्दमाना इव कालमेघाः कथा विचित्राः कथयांबभूवुः। न वैश्यशूद्रौपयिकीः कथास्ता न च द्विजानां कथयन्ति वीराः
They spoke together in varied tales, roaring like thunderclouds; their stories were not fit for merchants or laborers, nor did those heroes speak of Brahmanas' matters.
निःसंशयं क्षत्रियपुंगवास्ते यथा हि युद्धं कथयन्ति राजन्। आशा हि नो व्यक्तमियं समृद्धा मुक्तान्हि पार्थाञ्शृणुमोऽग्निदाहात्
Without doubt, O King, those foremost Kshatriyas spoke of battle as only warriors do; our hope is clearly fulfilled, for we hear that the Parthas escaped the fire.
यथा हि लक्ष्यं निहतं धनुश्च सज्यं कृतं तेन तथा प्रसह्य। यथा हि भाषन्ति परस्परं ते छन्ना ध्रुवं ते प्रचरन्ति पार्थाः
Just as a target is struck and a bow is strung, so too did they act with force; and the way they spoke with each other shows that the Parthas are surely moving about in disguise.
ततः स राजा द्रुपदः प्रहृष्टः पुरोहितं प्रेषायामास तेषाम्। विद्याम युष्मानिति भाषमाणो महात्मानः पाण्डुसुताः स्थ कच्चित्
Then King Drupada, delighted, sent his priest to them, saying, 'Go and find out if you are truly the great-souled sons of Pandu.'
गृहीतवाक्यो नृपतेः पुरोधा गत्वा प्रशंसामभिधाय तेषाम्। वाक्यं समग्रं नृपतेर्यथाव- दुवाच चानुक्रमविक्रमेण
The priest, having received the king's command, went to them, offered praise, and then conveyed the king's entire message to them in proper order and manner.
विज्ञातुमिच्छत्यवनीश्वरो वः पाञ्चालराजो वरदो वरार्हाः। लक्ष्यस्य वेद्धारमिमं हि दृष्ट्वा हर्षस्य नान्तं प्रतिपद्यते सः
The lord of the land, the king of Panchala, wishes to know who you are, O worthy ones; seeing this one who struck the target, he cannot contain his joy.
आख्यात च ज्ञातिकुलानुपूर्वी पदं शिरःसु द्विषतां कुरुध्वम्। प्रह्लादयध्वं हृदयं ममेदं पाञ्चालराजस्य च सानुगस्य
Declare your lineage and ancestry; place your feet upon the heads of your enemies; gladden my heart and that of the king of Panchala and his followers.
पाण्डुर्हि राजा द्रुपदस्य राज्ञः प्रियः सखा चात्मसमो बभूव। तस्यैष कामो दुहिता ममेयं स्नुषा यदि स्यादिह कौरवस्य
King Pandu was dear to King Drupada, his friend and equal; his wish is that my daughter might become the daughter-in-law of the Kaurava line.
अयं हि कामो द्रुपदस्य राज्ञो हृदि स्थितो नित्यमनिन्दिताङ्गाः। यदर्जुनो वै पृथुदीर्घबाहु- र्धर्मेण विन्देत सुतां ममैताम्
This is the constant desire in the heart of King Drupada, O faultless ones: that Arjuna, broad and long-armed, might win my daughter in righteousness.
कृतं हि तत्स्यात्सुकृतं ममेदं यशश्च पुण्यं च हितं तदेतत्। अथोक्तवाक्यं हि पुरोहितं स्थितं ततो विनीतं समुदीक्ष्य राजा
If this is accomplished, it will be a great deed for me, bringing fame, merit, and benefit; thus, after the priest had spoken, the king, seeing him standing humbly, addressed him.
समीपतो भीममिदं शशास प्रदीयतां पाद्यमर्ध्यं तथाऽस्मै। मान्यः पुरोधा द्रुपदस्य राज्ञ- स्तस्मै प्रयोज्याऽभ्यधिका हि पूजा
He instructed Bhima, who was nearby, 'Bring water for washing the feet and the best seat for him; the priest of King Drupada deserves the highest honor.'
भीमस्ततस्तत्कृतवान्नरेन्द्र तां चैव पूजां प्रतिगृह्य हर्षात्। सुखोपविष्टं तु पुरोहितं तदा युधिष्ठिरो ब्राह्मणमित्युवाच
Then Bhima did as instructed, and the priest, delighted, accepted the honor; comfortably seated, the priest was then addressed by Yudhishthira as follows.
पाञ्चालराजेन सुता निसृष्टा स्वधर्मदृष्टेन यथा न कामात्। प्रदिष्टशुंल्का द्रुपदेन राज्ञा सा तेन वीरेण तथाऽनुवृत्ता
The daughter was given by the king of the Panchalas, in accordance with his own duty and not out of desire; the bride-price was set by King Drupada, and she was thus bestowed upon that hero.
न तत्र वर्णेषु कृता विवक्षा न चापि शीले न कुले न गोत्रे। कृतेन सज्येन हि कार्मुकेण विद्धेन लक्ष्येण हि सा विसृष्टा
There was no consideration of caste, nor of character, family, or lineage; for she was given to the one who, having strung the bow and struck the target, fulfilled the set condition.
सेयं तथाऽनेन महात्मनेह कृष्णा जिता पार्थिवसङ्घमध्ये। नैवं गते सौमकिरद्य राजा सन्तापमर्हत्यसुखाय कर्तुम्
Thus, in this way, Krishna was won by this great-souled one in the midst of the assembly of kings; therefore, O Saumaki, the king has no reason today to feel distress or to act for his own comfort.
कामश्च योऽसौ द्रुपदस्य राज्ञः स चापि संपत्स्यति पार्थिवस्य। संप्राप्यरूपां हि नरेन्द्रकन्या- मिमामहं ब्राह्मण साधु मन्ये
And that desire which King Drupada had will also be fulfilled; having obtained such a princess, O Brahmin, I consider this to be truly good.
न तद्धनुर्मन्दबलेन शक्यं मौर्व्या समायोजयितुं तथाहि। न चाकृतास्त्रेण न हीनजेन लक्ष्यं तथा पातयितुं हि शक्यम्
That bow could not be strung by one of weak strength, nor could the target be struck by one unskilled in weapons or inferior in prowess.
तस्मान्न तापं दुहितुर्निमित्तं पाञ्चालराजोऽर्हति कर्तुमद्य। न चापि तत्पातनमन्यथेह कर्तुं हि शक्यं भुवि मानवेन
Therefore, the king of the Panchalas should not feel sorrow today on account of his daughter; nor could that target have been brought down in any other way by any man on earth.
एवं ब्रुवत्येव युधिष्ठिरे तु पाञ्चालराजस्य समीपतोऽन्यः। तत्राजगामाशु नरो द्वितीयो निवेदयिष्यन्निह सिद्धमन्नम्
While Yudhishthira was thus speaking, another man quickly approached from the side of the king of the Panchalas, intending to announce that the food was ready.
जन्यार्थमन्नं द्रुपदेन राज्ञा विवाहहेतोरुपसंस्कृतं च। तदाप्नुवध्वं कृतसर्वकार्याः कृष्णा च तत्रैतु चिरं न कार्यम्
Food was prepared by King Drupada for the sake of the guests and for the wedding; now that all tasks are complete, receive it, and let Krishna come there without delay.
इमे रथाः काञ्चनपद्मचित्राः सदश्वयुक्ता वसुधाधिपार्हाः। एतान्समारुह्य परैत सर्वे पाञ्चालराजस्य निवेशनं तत्
Here are chariots adorned with golden lotus designs, yoked with fine horses and worthy of kings; mount these, all of you, and proceed to the residence of the king of the Panchalas.
ततः प्रयाताः कुरुपुंगवास्ते पुरोहितं तं परियाप्य सर्वे। आस्थाय यानानि महान्ति तानि कुन्ती च कृष्णा च सहैकयाने
Then those foremost of the Kurus set out, all together with the priest; they boarded those great vehicles, and Kunti and Krishna rode together in one chariot.
स्त्रीभिः सुगन्धाम्बरमाल्यदानै- र्विभूषिता आभरणैर्विचित्रैः। माङ्गल्यगीतध्वनिवाद्यघोषै- र्मनोहरैः पुण्यकृतां वरिष्ठैः
Adorned with fragrant garments and garlands, decorated with various ornaments, accompanied by auspicious songs and the sounds of musical instruments, charming and performed by the best of the virtuous women—
संगीयमानाः प्रययुः प्रहृष्टा दीपैर्ज्वलद्भिः सहिताश्च विप्रैः
They set out joyfully, accompanied by blazing lamps and Brahmins.
स वै तथोक्तस्तु युधिष्ठिरेण पाञ्चालराजस्य पुरोहितोऽग्र्यः। सर्वं यथोक्तं कुरुनन्दनेन निवेदयामास नृपाय गत्वा
Thus instructed by Yudhishthira, the chief priest of the king of the Panchalas went and reported everything exactly as told by the son of Kuru to the king.
श्रुत्वा तु वाक्यानि पुरोहितस्य यान्युक्तवान्भारत धर्मराजः। जिज्ञासयैवाथ कुरूत्तमानां द्रव्याण्यनेकान्युपसंजहार
Hearing the words spoken by the priest, which the righteous king Yudhishthira had said, he, desiring to know the intentions of the foremost Kurus, brought forth many gifts.
फलानि माल्यानि च संस्कृतानि वर्माणि चर्माणि तथाऽऽसनानि। गाश्चैव राजन्नथ चैव रज्जू- र्बीजानि चान्यानि कृषीनिमित्तम्
Fruits and prepared garlands, armor, shields, seats, cows, ropes, and other seeds for agriculture, O king, were brought forth.
अन्येषु शिल्पेषु च यान्यपि स्युः सर्वाणि कृत्यान्यखिलेन तत्र। क्रीडानिमित्तान्यपि यानि तत्र सर्वाणि तत्रोपजहार राजा
And whatever else might be needed for other crafts, all tasks were fully provided there; and all things for sport and play were also brought by the king.
वर्माणि चर्माणि च भानुमन्ति खड्गा महान्तोऽश्वरथाश्च चित्राः। धनूंषि चाग्र्याणि शराश्च चित्राः शक्त्यृष्टयः काञ्चनभूषणाश्च
Brilliant armor and shields, great swords, splendid horses and chariots, excellent bows and decorated arrows, spears, lances, and weapons adorned with gold—
प्रासा भुशुण्ड्यश्च परश्वधाश्च सांग्रामिकं चैव तथैव सर्वम्। शय्यासनान्युत्तमवस्तुवन्ति तथैव वासो विविधं च तत्र
Javelins, clubs, axes, all kinds of weapons for battle, the best beds and seats with fine coverings, and various garments were also there.
