अशेत भूमौ सह पाण्डुपुत्रैः पादोपधानीव कृता कुशेषु। न तत्र दुःखं मनसापि तस्या न चावमेने कुरुपुङ्गवांस्तान्
She lay on the ground with the sons of Pandu, using their feet as her pillow on the kusa grass; she felt no sorrow, not even in her mind, nor did she look down upon those foremost of Kurus.
ते तत्र शूराः कथयांबभूवुः कथा विचित्राः पृतनाधिकाराः। अस्त्राणि दिव्यानि रथांश्च नागान् खड्गान्गदाश्चापि परश्वधांश्च
There those heroes began to tell wondrous tales—stories of battles, of celestial weapons, chariots, elephants, swords, maces, and axes.
तेषां कथास्ताः परिकीर्त्यमानाः पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतस्तदानीम्। सुश्राव कृष्णां च तदा निषण्णां ते चापि सर्वे ददृशुर्मनुष्याः
As those stories were being recounted, the son of the Panchala king heard them, and saw Krishna (Draupadi) sitting there; all the people also saw them.
धृष्टद्युम्नो राजपुत्रस्तु सर्वं वृत्तं तेषां कथितं चैव रात्रौ। सर्वं राज्ञे द्रुपदायाखिलेन निवेदयिष्यंस्त्वरितो जगाम
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the prince, heard all that had happened to them that night, and quickly went to report everything in full to King Drupada.
पाञ्चालराजस्तु विषण्णरूप- स्तान्पाण्डवानप्रतिविन्दमानः। धृष्टद्युम्नं पर्यपृच्छन्महात्मा क्व सा गता केन नीता च कृष्णा
The king of the Panchalas, anxious and unable to recognize the Pandavas, questioned the great-souled Dhṛṣṭadyumna: 'Where has Krishna gone, and by whom has she been taken?'
कच्चिन्न शूद्रेण न हीनजेन वैश्येन वा करदेनोपपन्ना। कच्चित्पदं मूर्ध्नि न पङ्कदिग्धं कच्चिन्न माला पतिता श्मशाने
'Surely she has not been taken by a Shudra, or a low-born man, or a Vaishya who pays taxes? Surely her foot has not stepped in mud, nor has her garland fallen in a cremation ground?'
कच्चित्स वर्णप्रवरो मनुष्य उद्रिक्तवर्णोऽप्युत एव कच्चित्। कच्चिन्न वामो मम मूर्ध्नि पादः कृष्णाभिमर्शेन कृतोऽद्य पुत्र
'Surely he is a man of the highest class, even if his appearance is extraordinary? Surely my daughter's foot has not touched my head today because of Krishna's embrace, my son?'
कच्चिन्न तप्स्ये परमप्रतीतः संयुज्य पार्थेन नरर्षभेण। वदस्व तत्त्वेन महानुभाव कोऽसौ विजेता दुहितुर्ममाद्य
'Surely I will not have to perform severe penance, fully convinced, for uniting my daughter with Partha, the best of men? Tell me truly, O great one, who is the victor who has won my daughter today?'
विचित्रवीर्यस्य सुतस्य कच्चि- त्कुरुप्रवीरस्य ध्रियन्ति पुत्राः। कच्चित्तु पार्थेन यवीयसाऽध्य धनुर्गृहीतं निहतं च लक्ष्यम्
'Are the sons of Vichitravirya, the mighty Kurus, still alive? Was the target today struck down by the younger Partha, bow in hand?'
ततस्तथोक्तः परिहृष्टरूपः पित्रे शशंसाथ स राजपुत्रः। धृष्टद्युम्नः सोमकानां प्रबर्हो वृत्तं यथा येन हृता च कृष्णा
Then, thus addressed, the prince Dhṛṣṭadyumna, chief of the Somakas, joyfully told his father all that had happened and how Krishna had been taken.
योऽसौ युवा व्यायतलोहिताक्षः कृष्णाजिनी देवसमानरूपः। यः कार्मुकाग्र्यं कृतवानधिज्यं लक्षं च यः पातितवान्पृथिव्याम्
'That young man with wide, red eyes, clad in a black antelope skin and godlike in form, who strung the great bow and struck down the target on the ground—'
असज्जमानश्च ततस्तरस्वी वृतो द्विजाग्र्यैरभिपूज्यमानः। चक्राम वज्रीव दितेः सुतेषु सर्वैश्च देवैर्ऋषिभिश्च जुष्टः
'He, swift and unhesitating, chosen and honored by the foremost Brahmins, acted like Indra among the sons of Diti, surrounded by all the gods and sages.'
कृष्मा प्रगृह्याजिनमन्वयात्तं नागं यथा नागवधूः प्रहृष्टा। `श्यामो युवा वारणमत्तगामी कृत्वा महत्कर्म सुदुष्करं तत्
'Taking the black antelope skin, Krishna joyfully followed him like a delighted elephant-cow follows the elephant; dark, youthful, moving like a proud elephant, he accomplished that great and difficult deed.'
यः सूतपुत्रेण चकार युद्धं शङ्केऽर्जुनं तं त्रिदशेशवीर्यम्।' अमृष्यमाणेषु नराधिपेषु क्रुद्धेषु वै तत्र समापतत्सु
'He who fought with the son of the charioteer—I believe him to be Arjuna, of the strength of the lord of the gods—while the kings there, unable to bear it, were all enraged and closed in.'
ततोऽपरः पार्थिवसङ्घमध्ये प्रवृद्धमारुज्य महीप्ररोहम्। प्राकालयत्तेन स पार्थिवौघान् भीमोऽन्तकः प्राणभृतो यथैव
Then, in the midst of the assembly of kings, Bhima mounted a great, flourishing tree, and with it, like Death among living beings, he struck down the hosts of kings before him.
बाह्यां पुराद्भार्गवकर्मशालाम्
Outside the city was the Bhargava's workshop.
तत्रोपविष्टार्चिरिवानलस्य तेषां जनित्रीति मम प्रतर्कः। तथाविधैरेव नरप्रवीरै- रुपोपविष्टैस्त्रिबिरग्निकल्पैः
There, seated like the blazing flame of fire, was a woman whom I surmised to be their mother; and with her sat three foremost men, resembling fire in their splendor.
तस्यास्ततस्तावभिवाद्य पादा- वुक्त्वा च कृष्णामभिवादयेति। स्थितौ च तत्रैव निवेद्य कृष्णां भिक्षाप्रचाराय गता नराग्र्याः
After respectfully greeting her feet and saying, 'Offer salutations to Krishna,' those eminent men, having announced Krishna's presence, stood there and then went out to beg for alms.
तेषां तु भैक्षं प्रतिगृह्य कृष्णा दत्वा बलिं ब्राह्मणसाच्च कृत्वा। तां चैव वृद्धां परिवेष्य तांश्च नरप्रवीरान्स्वयमप्यभुङ्क्त
Krishna received their alms, offered a portion as an oblation to the Brahmanas, served the elderly woman, and then herself ate along with those noble men.
सुप्तास्तु ते पार्थिव सर्व एव कृष्णा च तेषां चरणोपधाने। आसीत्पृथिव्यां शयनं च तेषां दर्भाजिनाग्रास्तरणोपपन्नम्
All those princes lay down to sleep, and Krishna placed herself at their feet as a pillow; their bed on the earth was covered with darbha grass and the upper part of animal skins.
ते नर्दमाना इव कालमेघाः कथा विचित्राः कथयांबभूवुः। न वैश्यशूद्रौपयिकीः कथास्ता न च द्विजानां कथयन्ति वीराः
They spoke together in varied tales, roaring like thunderclouds; their stories were not fit for merchants or laborers, nor did those heroes speak of Brahmanas' matters.
निःसंशयं क्षत्रियपुंगवास्ते यथा हि युद्धं कथयन्ति राजन्। आशा हि नो व्यक्तमियं समृद्धा मुक्तान्हि पार्थाञ्शृणुमोऽग्निदाहात्
Without doubt, O King, those foremost Kshatriyas spoke of battle as only warriors do; our hope is clearly fulfilled, for we hear that the Parthas escaped the fire.
यथा हि लक्ष्यं निहतं धनुश्च सज्यं कृतं तेन तथा प्रसह्य। यथा हि भाषन्ति परस्परं ते छन्ना ध्रुवं ते प्रचरन्ति पार्थाः
Just as a target is struck and a bow is strung, so too did they act with force; and the way they spoke with each other shows that the Parthas are surely moving about in disguise.
ततः स राजा द्रुपदः प्रहृष्टः पुरोहितं प्रेषायामास तेषाम्। विद्याम युष्मानिति भाषमाणो महात्मानः पाण्डुसुताः स्थ कच्चित्
Then King Drupada, delighted, sent his priest to them, saying, 'Go and find out if you are truly the great-souled sons of Pandu.'
गृहीतवाक्यो नृपतेः पुरोधा गत्वा प्रशंसामभिधाय तेषाम्। वाक्यं समग्रं नृपतेर्यथाव- दुवाच चानुक्रमविक्रमेण
The priest, having received the king's command, went to them, offered praise, and then conveyed the king's entire message to them in proper order and manner.
विज्ञातुमिच्छत्यवनीश्वरो वः पाञ्चालराजो वरदो वरार्हाः। लक्ष्यस्य वेद्धारमिमं हि दृष्ट्वा हर्षस्य नान्तं प्रतिपद्यते सः
The lord of the land, the king of Panchala, wishes to know who you are, O worthy ones; seeing this one who struck the target, he cannot contain his joy.
आख्यात च ज्ञातिकुलानुपूर्वी पदं शिरःसु द्विषतां कुरुध्वम्। प्रह्लादयध्वं हृदयं ममेदं पाञ्चालराजस्य च सानुगस्य
Declare your lineage and ancestry; place your feet upon the heads of your enemies; gladden my heart and that of the king of Panchala and his followers.
पाण्डुर्हि राजा द्रुपदस्य राज्ञः प्रियः सखा चात्मसमो बभूव। तस्यैष कामो दुहिता ममेयं स्नुषा यदि स्यादिह कौरवस्य
King Pandu was dear to King Drupada, his friend and equal; his wish is that my daughter might become the daughter-in-law of the Kaurava line.
अयं हि कामो द्रुपदस्य राज्ञो हृदि स्थितो नित्यमनिन्दिताङ्गाः। यदर्जुनो वै पृथुदीर्घबाहु- र्धर्मेण विन्देत सुतां ममैताम्
This is the constant desire in the heart of King Drupada, O faultless ones: that Arjuna, broad and long-armed, might win my daughter in righteousness.
कृतं हि तत्स्यात्सुकृतं ममेदं यशश्च पुण्यं च हितं तदेतत्। अथोक्तवाक्यं हि पुरोहितं स्थितं ततो विनीतं समुदीक्ष्य राजा
If this is accomplished, it will be a great deed for me, bringing fame, merit, and benefit; thus, after the priest had spoken, the king, seeing him standing humbly, addressed him.
