भूषणं रत्नखचितैरलंचक्रुर्यथोचितम्। माता च तस्याः पृषती हरितालमनश्शिलाम्
They adorned her with ornaments set with precious gems as was fitting; and her mother, with her own fingers, took green mineral and yellow pigment.
अङ्गुलीभ्यामुपादाय तिलकं विदधे मुखे। अलङ्कृतां वधूं दृष्ट्वा योषितो मुदमाययुः
With her fingers, she applied a tilaka mark to her daughter's face; seeing the bride adorned, the women rejoiced.
माता न मुमुदे तस्याः पतिः कीदृग्भविष्यति। सौविदल्लाः समागम्य द्रुपदस्याज्ञया ततः
But her mother did not rejoice, wondering, 'What kind of husband will she have?' Then the attendants gathered, by Drupada's command.
एनामारोपयामासुः करिणीं कुचभूषिताम्। ततोऽवाद्यन्त वाद्यानि मङ्गलानि दिवि स्पृशन्
They seated her, whose breasts were adorned, upon an elephant; then auspicious instruments were played, their sounds reaching the heavens.
विलासिनीजनाश्चापि प्रवरं करिणीशतम्। माङ्गल्यगीतं गायन्त्यः पार्स्वयोरुभयोर्ययुः
And the women of the palace, along with a hundred noble elephants, singing auspicious songs, went on either side of her.
जनापसरणे व्यग्राः प्रतिहार्यः पुरा ययुः। कोलाहलो महानासीत्तस्मिन्पुरवरे तदा
The ushers, busy clearing the crowds, went ahead through the city; at that time, a great commotion arose in that splendid city.
धृष्टद्युम्नो ययावग्रे हयमारुह्य भारत। द्रुपदो रङ्गदेशे तु बलेन महता युतः
Dhṛṣṭadyumna went at the front, mounted on a horse, O Bhārata; and Drupada, in the arena, was accompanied by a great army.
तस्थौ व्यूह्य महानीकं पालितं दृढधन्विभिः।' आप्लुताङ्गीं सुवसनां सर्वाभरणभूषिताम्
He stood, having arrayed his mighty forces, guarded by archers with firm bows; and she, with graceful limbs, well-dressed and adorned with all ornaments—
मालां च समुपादाय काञ्चनीं समलङ्कृताम्। `आगतां ददृशुः सर्वे रङ्गभूमिमलङ्कृताम्
—holding a golden, well-adorned garland, was seen by all as she entered the decorated arena.
अवतीर्णा ततो रङ्गं द्रौपदी भरतर्षभ। `तस्थौ प्रमुदितान्सर्वान्नृपतीन्रङ्गमण्डले। प्रेक्षन्ती व्रीडितापाङ्गी द्रष्टृणां सुमनोहरा
Then Draupadī descended into the arena, O bull of the Bharatas, and stood in the circle of kings, glancing shyly, enchanting all the onlookers.
पुरोहितः सोमकानां मन्त्रविद्ब्राह्मणः शुचिः। परिस्तीर्य जुहावाग्निमाज्येन विधिवत्तदा
The pure-minded priest of the Somakas, skilled in mantras, then spread the sacred grass and offered oblations into the fire with clarified butter, according to the rite.
संतर्पयित्वा ज्वलनं ब्राह्मणान्स्वस्ति वाच्य च। वारयामास सर्वाणि वादित्राणि समन्ततः
Having satisfied the fire and spoken blessings for the Brahmins, he ordered all the musical instruments to be silenced on every side.
निःशब्दे तु कृते तस्मिन्धृष्टद्युम्नो विशांपते। कृष्णामादाय विधिवन्मेघदुन्दुभिनिःस्वनः
When silence had been established there, O lord of the people, Dhrishtadyumna, with a sound like thunderclouds, duly took Krishna by the hand.
रङ्गमध्यं गतस्तत्र मेघगम्भीरया गिरा। वाक्यमुच्चैर्जगादेदं श्लक्ष्णमर्थवदुत्तमम्
He entered the center of the arena and, with a voice deep as a storm cloud, spoke these excellent, clear, and meaningful words aloud.
इदं धनुर्लक्ष्यमिमे च बाणाः शृण्वन्तु मे भूपतयः समेताः। छिद्रेण यन्त्रस्य मसर्पयध्वं शरैः शितैर्व्योमचरैर्दशार्धैः
Here is the target and here are the arrows; let the assembled kings listen to me. String your sharp, swift-flying arrows through the aperture of the mechanism.
एतन्महत्कर्म करोति यो वै कुलेन रूपेण बलेन युक्तः। तस्याद्य भार्या भगिनी ममेयं कृष्णा भवित्री न मृषा ब्रवीमि
Whoever accomplishes this great feat, endowed with noble lineage, beauty, and strength, today shall have Krishna, my sister, as his wife; I do not speak falsely.
तानेवमुक्त्वा द्रुपदस्य पुत्रः पश्चादिदं तां भगिनीमुवाच। नाम्ना च गोत्रेण च कर्मणा च संकीर्तयन्भूमिपतीन्समेतान्
Having spoken thus, Drupada’s son then addressed his sister, naming and proclaiming to her the gathered kings by their names, lineages, and deeds.
दुर्योधनो दुर्विषहो दुर्मुखो दुष्प्रधर्षणः। विविंशतिर्विकर्णश्च सहो दुःशासनस्तथा
Duryodhana, Durvishaha, Durmukha, Dushpradharshana, Vivimshati, Vikarna, Saha, and Duhshasana as well,
युयुत्सुर्वायुवेगश्च भीमवेगरवस्तथा। उग्रायुधो बलाकी च करकायुर्विरोचनः
Yuyutsu, Vayu-vega, Bhima-vega-rava, Ugrayudha, Balaki, Karakayu, and Virochana,
कुण्डकश्चित्रसेनश्च सुवर्चाः कनकध्वजः। नन्दको बाहुशाली च तुहुण्डो विकटस्तथा
Kundaka, Citrasena, Suvarcha, Kanakadhvaja, Nandaka, Bahushali, Tuhuṇḍa, and Vikaṭa,
एते चान्ये च बहवो धार्तराष्ट्रा महाबलाः। कर्णेन सहिता वीरास्त्वदर्थं समुपागताः
And many other mighty sons of Dhritarashtra, heroes, have come together with Karna for your sake.
असङ्ख्याता महात्मानः पार्थिवाः क्षत्रियर्षभाः। शकुनिः सौबलश्चैव वृषकोऽथ बृहद्बलः
Countless great-souled kings, foremost among warriors, are here; Shakuni the son of Subala, Vrishaka, and Brihadbala as well.
एते गान्धारराजस्य सुताः सर्वे समागताः। अश्वत्थामा च भोजश्च सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरौ
All these sons of the king of Gandhara have assembled; Ashvatthama and Bhoja too, foremost among weapon-bearers.
समवेतौ महात्मानौ त्वदर्थे समलङ्कृतौ। बृहन्तो मणिमांश्चैव दण्डधारश्च पार्थिवः
These two great-souled ones, adorned for your sake, Brihanta and Maniman, and the king Dandadhara,
सहदेवजयत्सेनौ मेघसन्धिश्च पार्थिवः। विराटः सह पुत्राभ्यां शङ्खेनैवोत्तरेण च
Sahadeva, Jayasena, Meghasandhi the king, Virata with his two sons, Shankha and Uttara,
वार्धक्षेमिः सुशर्मा च सेनाबिन्दुश्च पार्थिवः। सुकेतुः सह पुत्रेण सुनाम्ना च सुवर्चसा
Vardhakshemi, Susharma, Senabindu the king, Suketu with his son Sunama, and Suvarchas,
सुचित्रः सुकुमारश्च वृकः सत्यधृतिस्तथा। सूर्यध्वजो रोचमानो नीलश्चित्रायुधस्तथा
Suchitra, Sukumara, Vrka, Satyadhriti, Suryadhvaja, Rocamana, Nila, and Chitrayudha,
अंशुमांश्चेकितानश्च श्रेणिमांश्च महाबलः। समुद्रसेनपुत्रश्च चन्द्रसेनः प्रतापवान्
Amshuman, Chekitana, Shreniman the mighty, Chandrasena, son of Samudrasena, renowned for his valor,
जलसन्धः पितापुत्रौ विदण्डो दण्ड एव च। पौण्ड्रको वासुदेवश्च भगदत्तश्च वीर्यवान्
Jalasandha with his father and son, Vidaṇḍa and Danda, Paundraka Vasudeva, and the mighty Bhagadatta,
कलिङ्गस्ताम्रलिप्तश्च पत्तनाधिपतिस्तथा। मद्रराजस्तथा शल्यः सहपुत्रो महारथः
The king of Kalinga, Tamralipta, the lord of Pattana, and Shalya, king of Madra, a great chariot-warrior, with his son.
