Then, having regained their sight, the kings departed; but the sage of the Bhargava line considered this to be the defeat of all the worlds.
At that time, O dear one, he resolved upon the destruction of the worlds; his mind became wholly inclined toward this purpose.
Desiring to avenge the Bhṛgus, the delight of the Bhṛgu lineage, blazing with ascetic power, undertook to destroy all the worlds.
He began to torment those worlds—gods, asuras, and humans—with fierce and mighty austerity, wishing to gladden his ancestors.
Then, O dear one, his ancestors, recognizing their descendant, came from the world of the ancestors and all spoke these words:
"Aurva, your power, O son, born of fierce austerity, has been seen; show favor to the worlds, restrain your anger."
"At that time, O dear one, the Bhṛgus, whose minds were purified, were not able to prevent it; all endured the slaughter by the Kṣatriyas, though they were being harmed."
"When, due to a long life, weariness overtook us, then, O dear one, we ourselves desired death at the hands of the Kṣatriyas."
"And whatever wealth was buried in the house of the Bhṛgus by someone, was placed there only to incite enmity by those wishing to anger the Kṣatriyas."
"What use have we for wealth, O best of twice-born, who long for heaven, when our lord of wealth has already brought us abundant riches?"
"When death could not take us all completely, then, O dear one, this means was considered by us as acceptable."
"A man who kills himself, O dear one, does not attain auspicious worlds; therefore, considering thus, we did not destroy ourselves by our own hand."
"Nor, O dear one, is this act you wish to do pleasing to us; restrain your mind from sin, from the destruction of all the worlds."
"Do not kill the Kṣatriyas, O dear one, nor the seven worlds, O son; do not let your ascetic energy be tainted, subdue the anger that has arisen."
"The vow I made in anger at that time, ancestors, for the destruction of all the worlds—let it not be in vain for me."
"I cannot bear to live having made a vow in vain out of wrath; for unspent anger burns me like fire burns dry wood."
"A man who, for a reason, allows anger to arise and then forgives, is not truly able to protect the three aims of life properly."
"He is the restrainer of the unruly and the protector of the virtuous; in such a case, anger is rightly employed by kings who seek victory over all."
While still in the womb, lying on my mother's thigh, I heard the cries of the Bhṛgu women when the Kṣatriyas slaughtered them.
When the lowest of Kṣatriyas, together with their allies, destroyed the Bhṛgus even in the womb, then wrath entered me.
My mothers, their hair disheveled, and my fathers too, did not find refuge anywhere in the worlds, seized by fear.
When no one would accept the wives of the Bhṛgus, then my blessed mother bore me in her thigh.
When there is someone in the world to restrain evil, then the evildoer does not arise in all the worlds.
But when evil finds no one to restrain it anywhere, then many people persist in wicked deeds.
Even one who knows an evil act and has the power to stop it, but does not, is implicated in that very deed, though he be a ruler.
If my fathers, though kings and lords, had the power but could not protect, then life here is not to be cherished.
Therefore, angered, I am the lord of the worlds; and your words, I am not bound to obey.
If even I, being a great lord, were to neglect the worlds, then surely fear from sin would arise among the people.
This fire of wrath within me seeks to consume the worlds; but if restrained by my own power, it would burn me alone.
I know you all desire the welfare of every world; therefore, O lords, do what is best for the worlds and for me.
