त्रायस्व मां महाभाग पतिं चेमं विमुञ्च मे। गन्धर्वी शरणं प्राप्ता नाम्ना कुम्भीनसी प्रभो
"Protect me, O greatly fortunate one, and release my husband for me; I, a Gandharva woman named Kumbhīnasī, have come to you for shelter, O lord."
युद्धे जितं यशोहीनं स्त्रीनाथमपराक्रमम्। को निहन्याद्रिपुं तात मुञ्चेमं रिपुसूदन
"Who would slay an enemy, O father, who is defeated in battle, deprived of fame, the protector of women, and lacking in valor? Release this one, O slayer of foes."
जीवितं प्रतिपद्यस्व गच्छ गन्धर्व मा शुचः। प्रदिशत्यभयं तेऽद्य कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः
"Regain your life and go, O Gandharva, do not grieve; today King Yudhiṣṭhira of the Kurus grants you safety."
जितोऽहं पूर्वकं नाम मुञ्चाम्यङ्गारपर्णताम्। यशोहीनं न च श्लाघ्यं स्वं नाम जनसंसदि
"I am defeated, bearing the name Pūrvaka; I release Aṅgāraparṇa; one deprived of fame does not praise his own name among people."
साध्विमं लब्धवाँल्लाभं योऽहं दिव्यास्त्रधारिणम्। गान्धर्व्या माययेच्छामि संयोजयितुमर्जुनम्
"Blessed am I to have gained this fortune, that I wish to unite Arjuna, wielder of divine weapons, with the Gandharva woman by my own will."
अस्त्राग्निना विचित्रोऽयं दग्धो मे रथ उत्तमः। सोऽहं चित्ररथो भूत्वा नाम्ना दग्धरथोऽभवं
"My excellent chariot was burned by the fire of weapons; thus, having become Citraratha, I am now called Dagdharatha by name."
संभृता चैव विद्येयं तपसेह मया पुरा। निवेदयिष्ये तामद्य प्राणदाय महात्मने
"This knowledge, long gathered by me through austerity, I shall now impart to the great-souled one who granted me life."
संस्तम्भयित्वा तरसा जितं शरणमागतम्। यो रिपुं योजयेत्प्राणैः कल्याणं किं न सोऽर्हति
"Who, having subdued an enemy by force, who has come seeking refuge after defeat, would not deserve prosperity if he joins that foe with his own life?"
चाक्षुषी नाम विद्येयं यां सोमाय ददौ मनुः। ददौ स विश्वावसवे मम विश्वावसुर्ददौ
"This knowledge called Cākṣuṣī, which Manu gave to Soma, Soma gave to Viśvāvasu, and Viśvāvasu gave to me."
सेयं कापुरुषं प्राप्ता गुरुदत्ता प्रणश्यति। आगमोऽस्या मया प्रोक्तो वीर्यं प्रतिनिबोध मे
"This, received from a teacher, perishes when given to an unworthy man; I have spoken its lineage—now listen to its power."
यच्चक्षुषा द्रष्टुमिच्छेत्रिषु लोकेषु किंचन। तत्पश्येद्यादृशं चेच्छेत्तादृशं द्रष्टुमर्हति
"Whatever one wishes to see with the eye among all worlds, that he sees; whatever form he desires, that he is able to behold."
एकपादेन षण्मासान्स्थितो विद्यां लभेदिमाम्। अनुनेष्याम्यहं विद्यां स्वयं तुभ्यं व्रते कृते
"By standing on one foot for six months, I obtained this knowledge; I myself shall impart it to you, if you undertake the vow."
विद्यया ह्यनया राजन्वयं नृभ्यो विशेषिताः। अविशिष्टाश्च देवानामनुभावप्रदर्शिनः
"By this knowledge, O king, we are distinguished among men, and not inferior to the gods, displaying their power."
गन्धर्वजानामश्वानामहं पुरुषसत्तम। भ्रातृभ्यस्तव तुभ्यं च पृथग्दाता शतं शतं
"O best of men, of the Gandharva horses, I shall give a hundred each to your brothers and to you separately."
देवगन्धर्ववाहास्ते दिव्यवर्णा मनोजवाः। क्षीणाक्षीणा भवन्त्येते न हीयन्ते च रंहसः
"Those divine Gandharva steeds, with celestial forms and swift as thought, become exhausted and unexhausted, and their speed does not diminish."
पुरा कृतं महेन्द्रस्य वज्रं वृत्रनिबर्हणम्। दशधा शतधा चैव तच्छीर्णं वृत्रमूर्धनि
"Long ago, the thunderbolt was made for Mahendra to slay Vṛtra; that was shattered into ten and a hundred pieces on Vṛtra's head."
ततो भागीकृतो देवैर्वज्रभाग उपास्यते। लोके यशोधनं किंचित्सैव वज्रतनुः स्मृता
Then, divided among the gods, a portion of the thunderbolt is revered; in the world, whatever brings fame and wealth is considered to have the nature of the thunderbolt.
वज्रपाणिर्ब्राह्मणः स्यात्क्षत्रं वज्ररथं स्मृतम्। वैश्या वै दानवज्राश्च कर्मवज्रा यवीयसः
A brahmin is said to wield the thunderbolt in his hand; the kshatriya is remembered as the chariot of the thunderbolt; the vaishyas are the givers of the thunderbolt, and the shudras are those whose actions are the lesser thunderbolts.
क्षत्रवज्रस्य भागेन अवध्या वाजिनः स्मृताः। रथाङ्गं वडबा सूते शूराश्चाश्वेषु ये मताः
By a portion of the kshatriya's thunderbolt, horses are considered invincible; the mare gives birth to the wheel of the chariot, and those who are renowned as heroes among horses.
कामवर्णाः कामजवाः कामतः समुपस्थिताः। इति गन्धर्वजाः कामं पूरयिष्यन्ति मे हयाः
With forms as desired, with speed as desired, appearing at will—thus, the Gandharva-born horses will fulfill my desire.
यदि प्रीतेन मे दत्तं संशये जीवितस्य वा। विद्याधं श्रुतं वाऽपि न तद्गन्धर्व रोचये
If what was given to me with joy, or even at the risk of life, is knowledge or learning, I do not desire that from the Gandharva.
संयोगो वै प्रीतिकरो महत्सु प्रतिदृश्यते। जीवितस्य प्रदानेन प्रीतो विद्यां ददामि ते
Union that brings joy is seen among the great; pleased by the gift of life, I will give you knowledge.
त्वत्तोऽप्यहं ग्रहीष्यामि अस्त्रमाग्नेयमुत्तमम्। तथैव योग्यं बीभत्सो चिराय मरतर्षभ
From you, too, I will receive the supreme missile of Agni, suitable for use, O mighty-armed one, for a long time, O bull among men.
त्वत्तोऽस्त्रेण वृणोम्यश्वान्संयोगः शास्वतोऽस्तुनौ। सखे तद्ब्रूहि गन्धर्व युष्मभ्यो यद्भयं भवेत्
In exchange for the weapon, I request horses from you; let our alliance be enduring. Friend, tell me, Gandharva, what danger may come from you all.
कारणं ब्रूहि गन्धर्व किं तद्येन स्म धर्षिताः। यान्तो वेदविदः सर्वे सन्तो रात्रावरिन्दमाः
Tell me the reason, Gandharva, what is it by which we have been overpowered, though all the learned in the Vedas, the virtuous, were proceeding at night?
अनग्नयोऽनाहुतयो न च विप्रपुरस्कृताः। यूयं ततो धर्षिताः स्थ मया वै पाण्डुनन्दनाः
You were without fire, without offerings, and not led by a brahmin; therefore, O son of Pandu, you were overpowered by me.
यक्षराक्षसगन्धर्वपिशाचपतगोरगाः। धर्षन्ति नरव्याघ्र न ब्राह्मणपुरस्कृतान्
Yakshas, rakshasas, gandharvas, pishachas, birds, and serpents overpower not those who are led by a brahmin, O tiger among men.
जानतापि मया तस्मात्तेजश्चाभिजनं च वः। इयमग्निमतां श्रेष्ठ धर्षिता वै पुरागतिः
Though I knew your energy and lineage, O best of those who honor fire, this was the ancient custom of overpowering.
को हि वस्त्रिषु लोकेषु न वेद भरतर्षभ। स्वैर्गुणैर्विस्तृतं श्रीमद्यशोऽग्र्यं भूरिवर्चसाम्
Who in these worlds, O best of the Bharatas, does not know your illustrious fame, spread by your own virtues, among those of great splendor?
यक्षराक्षसगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगदानवाः। विस्तरं कुरुवंशस्य धीमन्तः कथयन्ति ते
Yakshas, rakshasas, gandharvas, pishachas, serpents, and danavas—all the wise among them recount in detail the glory of the Kuru lineage.
