Having spoken thus, when the sanctified oblation was offered by Yāja, a boy, resembling a god, arose from the fire.
He was blazing like a flame, terrifying in form, crowned, wearing excellent armor, holding a sword and arrows, and repeatedly sounding his bow.
He mounted a splendid chariot and departed; then the delighted Pañcālas cheered, exclaiming, 'Well done! Well done!'
The earth could scarcely bear the joy that seized them; the prince, dispelling fear, brought glory to the Pañcālas.
'This one is born to remove the king’s sorrow and to slay Droṇa.' Thus spoke a wondrous, unseen, celestial voice.
And a maiden, Pāñcālī, also arose from the midst of the altar—beautiful, with lovely limbs, dark-eyed, and wide-hipped.
Dark-skinned, with eyes like lotus petals, hair curled and dark-blue, coppery prominent nails, lovely brows, and charming, full breasts.
Assuming a human form, yet shining with divine beauty, her fragrance, like blue lotuses, spread for a distance.
She possessed supreme beauty, unmatched on earth, desired by gods, Dānavas, and Yakṣas, and resembled a goddess in form.
'She is a fitting match for Arjuna, son of Pāṇḍu,' said the delighted courtiers, led by the king’s loyal followers.
And as that lovely-hipped maiden was born, a bodiless voice declared, 'Kṛṣṇā, the best of all women, will bring destruction upon the Kṣatriyas.'
'At the right time, this fair-waisted lady will accomplish the work of the gods; because of her, great fear will arise among the Kauravas.'
Hearing this, all the Panchalas roared like a pride of lions, and the earth, filled with their joy, could scarcely bear them.
Seeing her, the king of the Panchalas shed tears of joy, embraced Krishna, called her 'Pandhu's daughter-in-law,' and, lifting Panchali onto his lap, was overcome with happiness.
Seeing those two, Prishata's daughter, desiring sons, approached Yaja, saying, 'Let these two know no other mother but me.'
Yaja replied to her, 'So be it,' wishing to please the king, and the Brahmins, with minds fulfilled, gave names to the two.
Because of his boldness, great wrath, and origin from Yajna, let this prince of Drupada be called Dhrishtadyumna.
And they named the dark-complexioned girl Krishna, for she was indeed dark in hue; thus, that pair was born to Drupada in the great sacrifice.
Dhrishtadyumna attained the highest mastery in Vedic study.
The mighty Bharadvaja brought Dhrishtadyumna, the Panchala prince, to his own abode and instructed him in the science of weapons.
Knowing that destiny cannot be averted and wishing to protect his own fame, the wise Drona did so.
Hearing of the event at the house of lac, the Brahmins of firm vows spoke these words to King Drupada of the Panchalas.
The sons of Dhritarashtra, along with their ministers, after consulting together, formed a most wicked plan for the destruction of the Pandavas.
It is heard that Purochana, sent by Duryodhana, went to Varanavata and constructed a great house of lac.
In that house, the evil-minded one set fire to the unsuspecting Pandavas and Kunti at midnight, O great king.
By that fire, the wretched and cruel Purochana himself was also burned; hearing this, Dhritarashtra and his relatives rejoiced greatly.
With little grief and a delighted heart, he then ordered Vidura, 'O wise one, perform the funeral rites for the Pandavas.'
'Alas, by the force of fate, they have gone to the abode of Yama,' so saying, Dhritarashtra and his relatives began the funeral offerings there.
Hearing from Bhishma, Vidura performed the last rites, for the evil deed for the destruction of the Pandavas had been done.
The doer of this act was neither seen nor heard of before; this is what we have heard, O blessed one, regarding the Pandavas.
