शकटान्नं ततो भुक्त्वा रक्षसः पाणिना सह। गृह्णन्नेव तदा वृक्षं निःशेषं पर्वतोपमम्
Having finished the cartloads of food, Bhima seized the entire mountain-like tree from the Rakshasa with one hand.
भीमसेनो हसन्नेव भुक्त्वा त्यक्त्वा च राक्षसम्। पीत्वा दधिघटान्पूर्णान्घृतकुम्भाञ्शतं शतम्
Laughing, Bhimasena finished eating, left the Rakshasa's food, and drank hundreds of pots full of curds and clarified butter.
वार्युपस्पृश्य संहृष्टस्तस्थौ गिरिरिवापरः। भ्रामयन्तं महावृक्षमायान्तं भीमदर्शनम्
After rinsing his mouth with water, delighted, he stood firm like another mountain, facing the fearsome Rakshasa brandishing a great tree.
दृष्ट्वोत्थायाहवे वीरः सिंहनादं व्यनादयत्। भुजवेगं तथाऽऽस्फोटं क्ष्वेलितं च महास्वनम्
Seeing this, the hero rose up in the battle, let out a lion's roar, and made a thunderous sound by clapping his arms and slapping them together.
कृत्वाऽऽह्वयत संक्रुद्धो भीमसेनोऽथ राक्षसम्। उवाचाशनिशब्देन ध्वनिना भीषयन्निव
Then, Bhimasena, enraged, challenged the Rakshasa and spoke with a voice like thunder, as if to terrify him.
बहुकालं सुपुष्टं ते शरीरं राक्षसाधम। द्विपच्चतुष्पन्मांसैश्च बहुभिश्चौदनैरपि
For a long time, your body has grown strong, O vile Rakshasa, by feeding on the flesh of bipeds, quadrupeds, and many kinds of food.
मद्बाहुबलमाश्रित्य न त्वं भूयस्त्वशिष्यसि। अद्य मद्बाहुनिष्पिष्टो गमिष्यसि यमालयम्
Relying on the strength of my arms, you will not eat again; today, crushed by my arms, you will go to the abode of Yama.
अद्यप्रभृति स्वप्स्यन्ति वेत्रकीयनिवासिनः। निरुद्विग्नाः पुरस्यास्य कण्टके सूद्धृते मया
From today, the dwellers of Vetrakiya will sleep without fear, for I will remove this thorn from their city.
अद्य युद्धे शरीरं ते कङ्कगोमायुवायसाः। मया हतस्य खादन्तु विकर्षन्तु च भूतले
Today, in battle, let the crows, jackals, and vultures eat your body, slain by me, and drag it across the earth.
एवमुक्त्वा सुसंक्रुद्धः पार्थो बकजिघांसया। उपाधावद्बकश्चापि पार्थं पार्थिवसत्तम
Having spoken thus, Partha, burning with anger and intent on slaying Baka, rushed at him; and Baka, too, charged at Partha, O best of kings.
महाकायो महावेगो दारयन्निव मेदिनीम्। पिशङ्गरूपः पिङ्गाक्षो भीमसेनमभिद्रवत्
With a massive body and immense speed, as if tearing the earth apart, tawny in form and with coppery eyes, the Rakshasa charged at Bhimasena.
त्रिशिखां भ्रुकुटीं कृत्वा संदश्य दशनच्छदम्। भृशं स भूयः संक्रुद्धो वृक्षमादाय राक्षसः
Furrowing his brow into three lines and baring his teeth, the Rakshasa, now greatly enraged, seized a tree.
ताडयिष्यंस्तदा भीमं तरसाऽभ्यद्रवद्बली। क्रुद्धेनाभिहतं वृक्षं प्रतिजग्राह लीलया
Intending to strike Bhima, the powerful one rushed at him with force; but Bhima, with ease, caught the tree that had been hurled at him in anger.
सव्येन पाणिना भीमः प्रहसन्निव भारत। ततः स पुनरुद्यम्य वृक्षान्बहुविधान्बली
Bhima, laughing as if in sport, caught it with his left hand, and then, the mighty one, raising many kinds of trees again—
प्राहिणोद्भीमसेनाय बकोऽपि बलवान्रणे। सर्वानपोहयद्वृक्षान्स्वस्य हस्तस्य शाखया
Baka, powerful in battle, hurled all those trees at Bhimasena; but Bhima swept them all aside with the branch in his hand.
तद्वृक्षयुद्धमभवद्वृक्षषण्डविनाशनम्।। महत्सुघोरं राजेन्द्र बकपाण्डवयोस्तदा
That battle of trees became a destruction of the grove—a great and terrible conflict, O king, between Baka and the Pandava at that time.
नाम विश्राव्य स बकः समभिद्रुत्य पाण्डवम्। समयुध्यत तीव्रेण वेगेन पुरुषादकः
Then Baka, announcing his name, rushed at the Pandava; the man-eater fought with fierce speed.
तयोर्वेगेन महता पृथिवी समकम्पत। पादपांश्च महामात्रांश्चूर्णयामासतुः क्षणात्
By the great force of the two, the earth trembled, and in a moment they crushed the huge trees and their trunks.
द्रुतमागत्य पाणिभ्यां गृहीत्वा चैनमाक्षिपत्। आक्षिप्तो भीमसेनश्च पुनरेवोत्थितो हसन्
Rushing swiftly, Baka seized Bhima with his hands and hurled him; but Bhimasena, thrown down, rose again, laughing.
आलिङ्ग्यापि बकं भीमो न्यहनद्वसुधातले। भीमो विसर्जयित्वैनं समाश्वसिहि राक्षस
Bhima, embracing Baka, struck him down upon the ground; then, releasing him, Bhima said, 'Take heart, Rakshasa.'
इत्युक्त्वा पुनरास्फोट्य उत्तिष्ठेति च सोऽब्रवीत्। समुत्पत्य ततः क्रुद्धो रूपं कृत्वा महत्तरम्
Having said this, Bhima clapped his hands and said, 'Rise up!' Then, leaping up in anger, Baka assumed an even greater form.
विरूपः सहसा तस्थौ2 तर्जयित्वा वृकोदरम्। अहसद्भीमसेनोऽपि राक्षसं भीमदर्शनम्
Suddenly standing there in a monstrous shape, he threatened Vrikodara; but Bhimasena laughed at the fearsome-looking Rakshasa.
असौ गृहीत्वा पाणिभ्यां पृष्ठतश्च व्यवस्थितः। जानुभ्यां पीडयित्वाथ पातयामास भूतले
Seizing him from behind with his hands, Bhima pressed him with his knees and threw him down to the ground.
पुनः क्रुद्धो विसृज्यैनं राक्षसं क्रोधजीवितम्। स्वां कटीमीषदुन्नम्य बाहू तस्य परामृशत्
Again, enraged, Bhima released the Rakshasa, whose life was sustained by anger, slightly raising his own hip and grasped Baka's arms.
तस्य बाहू समादाय त्वरमाणो वृकोदरः। उत्क्षिप्य चावधूयैनं पातयन्बलवान्भुवि
Taking hold of his arms, Vrikodara, acting swiftly, lifted and shook him, then hurled the powerful one to the earth.
तं तु वामेन पादेन क्रुद्धो भीमपराक्रमः। उरस्येनं समाजघ्ने भीमस्तु पतितं भुवि
Then, with his left foot, the wrathful and mighty Bhima struck Baka on the chest as he lay fallen on the ground.
व्यात्ताननेन घोरेण लम्बजिह्वेन रक्षसा। तेनाभिद्रुत्य भीमेन भीमो मूर्ध्नि समाहतः
With mouth agape and terrifying, tongue hanging down, the Rakshasa rushed at Bhima, but Bhima struck him on the head.
एवं निहन्यमानः स राक्षसेन बलीयसा। रोषेण महताऽऽविष्टो भीमो भीमपराक्रमः
Thus, being struck by the powerful Rakshasa, Bhima, of terrible prowess, was seized by great wrath.
गृहीत्वा मध्यमुत्क्षिप्य बली जग्राह राक्षसम्। तावन्योन्यं पीडयन्तौ पुरुषादवृकोदरौ
Seizing the middle and lifting it up, the mighty Bhima grasped the Rakshasa; the two, Bhima and the man-eater, pressed each other fiercely.
मत्ताविव महानागावन्योन्यं विचकर्षतुः
Like two intoxicated great elephants, they dragged each other about.
