Then, bowing, the boy grasped his father's feet and his mother's; those two, of supreme might, gave him his name.
His mother called him Ghatotkacha, for his head was shaped like a pot; thus, he became known by that name.
Ghatotkacha was devoted to the Pandavas and always dear to them, and they in turn cherished him as their own.
The mighty Ghatotkacha, together with Pritha, greeted the Pandavas respectfully and spoke to them after saluting.
"What shall I do for you, noble ones? Speak without hesitation, O sinless ones." As Bhimasena's son spoke thus, Kunti replied to him.
"You are born in the Kuru line and are truly equal to Bhima; you are the eldest of five sons. Aid your brothers, my child."
Thus addressed by Pritha, he bowed and replied: "As Ravana and mighty Indrajit were renowned in the world, so am I among men, equal in form and strength, and even distinguished."
Ghatotkacha, best of Rakshasas, said, "At the proper time, I will come to serve my fathers," and then set out toward the northern direction.
For he was created by the blessed one, the great soul, for the sake of power, a mighty chariot-warrior, to be the peerless champion of his lineage.
"I have dwelt with you, O lotus-eyed one; you will see me again when you are established in the kingdom," he said to her then.
"If you remember me, beloved, and wish for me in secret, O lord, then I will swiftly come under your command, O Bharata."
Having spoken thus, Hiḍimbā, fixing her mind on the Pandava and recalling their agreement, quickly departed to her own path.
Then all the Pandavas, honored by Shalihotra with forest fare, took leave of the great sage in his hermitage.
All of them, together with Kunti, fashioned matted locks for themselves and wore bark garments and deerskins, adopting the ascetic appearance.
The Pandavas, versed in righteousness and justice, studied the Brahmanical Veda, all the branches of learning, the science of ethics, and the knowledge of law.
By Shalihotra's favor, having gained his affection, they traveled from forest to forest, slaying many groups of animals, and departed swiftly, O king, those mighty chariot-warriors.
They beheld the Matsyas, Trigartas, Panchalas, and the regions of the Kichakas, as well as beautiful forest tracts and lakes.
Sometimes, those mighty chariot-warriors carried their mother as they hurried along; sometimes, weary in the wilderness, sometimes standing joyfully.
At times, they traveled at their own pace, and then again moved forward with force; on the path, all of them saw their grandfather, Dvaipayana.
Then, together with their mother, those scorers of foes greeted the great-souled Krishna Dvaipayana, and stood before him with joined palms.
O best of men, I knew of their departure from the hermitage, and, learning of Ghatotkaca's birth, my joy increased.
Near this city lies a pleasant and healthy place; here you may dwell concealed, awaiting my arrival.
Thus, Vyasa comforted the Pandavas, O king, and reassured Kunti, who had come to Ekachakra.
A man should not perform only righteousness, nor only unrighteousness; in this world, there is no one who does only good or only evil.
The doer inevitably receives the fruit of both virtue and sin; by the result of evil deeds, great misfortune has been attained.
Having spoken thus, he settled them in the dwelling of the Brahman.
The blessed Vyasa, the sage and lord, departed as he wished.
The sons of Kunti, those mighty chariot-warriors, arrived at Ekachakra; O best of twice-born, what did the Pandavas do next?
The sons of Kunti, those mighty chariot-warriors, arrived at Ekachakra and stayed for not a long time in the Brahman's dwelling.
They gazed upon delightful and various forests, as well as regions of kings, rivers, and lakes.
