पृथिव्यां पार्थइवान्सर्वान्प्रशासिष्यति धर्मराट्। धर्मेण जित्वा पृथिवीमखिलां धर्मकृद्वशी
Yudhishthira, king of dharma, will rule all the sons of Pritha on earth, conquering the whole world through righteousness.
स्थापयित्वा वशे सर्वां सपर्वतवनां शुभाम्। भीमसेनार्जुनबलाद्भोक्ष्यत्ययमसंशयम्
Having brought under his control the entire beautiful earth with its mountains and forests by the strength of Bhima and Arjuna, he will surely enjoy it.
पुत्रास्तव च माद्र्याश्च पञ्चैते लोकविश्रुताः। स्वराष्ट्रे विहरिष्यन्ति सुखं सुमनसस्तदा
Your sons and Madri's, these five renowned in the world, will live happily and contentedly in their own kingdom.
यक्ष्यन्ति च नरव्याघ्रा विजित्य पृथिवीमिमाम्। राजसूयाश्वमेधाद्यैः क्रतुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः
These tigers among men, having conquered this earth, will perform sacrifices such as Rajasuya and Ashvamedha, giving abundant gifts.
अनुगृह्य सुहृद्वर्गं धनेन च सुखेन च। पितृपैतामहं राज्यमहारिष्यन्ति ते सुताः
Having favored their friends with wealth and happiness, your sons will regain the ancestral kingdom of their fathers and grandfathers.
स्नुषा कमलपत्राक्षी नाम्ना कमलपालिका। वशवर्तिनी तु भीमस्य पुत्रमेषा जनिष्यति
Your daughter-in-law, lotus-eyed and named Kamalapalika, obedient to Bhima, will bear him a son.
तेन पुत्रेण कृच्छ्रेषु भविष्यथ च तारिताः। इह मासं प्रतीक्षध्वमागमिष्याम्यहं पुनः
By that son you will be rescued from hardships; wait here for a month, I will come again.
देशकालौ विदित्वैवं यास्यध्वं परमां मुदम्
Knowing the proper time and place, you will experience supreme joy.
स तैः प्राञ्जलिभिः सर्वैस्तथेत्युक्तो जनाधिप। जगाम भगवान्व्यासो यथागतमृषिः प्रभुः
When the lordly sage Vyasa was thus addressed by all with joined palms, he departed as he had come.
गते भगवति व्यासे पाण्डवा विगतज्वराः। ऊषुस्तत्र च षण्मासान्वटवृक्षे यथासुखम्
When the blessed Vyasa had gone, the Pandavas, free from anxiety, dwelled there for six months beneath the banyan tree as they pleased.
शाकमूलफलाहारास्तपः कुर्वन्ति पाण्डवाः। अनुज्ञाता महाराज ततः कमलपालिका
Sustained by vegetables, roots, and fruits, the Pandavas practiced austerities; then, O king, Kamalapalika was permitted.
रमयन्ती सदा भीमं तत्रतत्र मनोजवा। दिव्याभरणवस्त्रा हि दिव्यस्रगनुलेपना
She, swift as the mind, always delighted Bhima there, adorned with divine ornaments, garments, garlands, and unguents.
एवं भ्रातॄन्सप्त मासान्हिडिम्बाऽवासयद्वने। पाण्डवान्भीमसेनार्थे राक्षसी कामरूपिणी
Thus for seven months Hidimba, the rakshasi of changing form, sheltered the Pandavas in the forest for Bhimasena's sake.
सुखं स विहरन्भीमस्तत्कालं पर्यणामयत्। ततोऽलभत सा गर्भं राक्षसी कामरूपिणी
Bhima spent that time happily with her, and then the rakshasi of changing form conceived.
अतृप्ता भीमसेनेन सप्तमासोपसंगता।' प्रजज्ञे राक्षसी पुत्रं भीमसेनान्महाबलात्
Unsated by Bhimasena, after seven months had passed, the Rakshasi bore a son from the mighty Bhimasena.
विरूपाक्षं महावक्त्रं शङ्कुकर्णं विभीषणम्। भीमरूपं सुताम्राक्षं तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रं महारथम्
He had deformed eyes, a great mouth, ears like winnowing baskets, a terrifying appearance, coppery eyes, sharp fangs, and was a mighty chariot-warrior.
महेष्वासं महावीर्यं महासत्वं महाजवम्। महाकायं महाकालं महाग्रीवं महाभुजम्
He was a great archer, of immense strength, vast courage, swift speed, enormous body, dreadful as death, broad-necked, and strong-armed.
अमानुषं मानुषजं भीमवेगमरिन्दमम्। पिशाचकानतीत्यान्यान्बभूवाति स मानुषान्
Though born of a human, he was not human; he had terrible force, unconquerable by enemies, surpassing all other Rakshasas and men.
बालोऽपि विक्रमं प्राप्तो मानुषेषु विशांपते। सर्वास्त्रेषु वरो वीरः प्रकाममभवद्बली
Even as a child, O lord of men, he displayed valor among humans; he was a hero, skilled in all weapons, and became exceedingly strong.
सद्यो हि गर्भं राक्षस्यो लभन्ते प्रसवन्ति च। कामरूपधराश्चैव भवन्ति बहुरूपिकाः
Rakshasis conceive and give birth instantly, and they are able to assume many forms at will.
प्रणम्य विकचः पादावगृह्णात्स पितुस्तदा। मातुश्च परमेष्वासस्तौ च नामास्य चक्रतुः
Then, bowing, the boy grasped his father's feet and his mother's; those two, of supreme might, gave him his name.
घटोहास्योत्कच इति माता तं प्रत्यभाषत। अभवत्तेन नामास्य घटोत्कच इति स्म ह
His mother called him Ghatotkacha, for his head was shaped like a pot; thus, he became known by that name.
अनुरक्तश्च तानासीत्पाण्डवान्स घटोत्कचः। तेषां च दयितो नित्यमात्मनित्यो बभूव ह
Ghatotkacha was devoted to the Pandavas and always dear to them, and they in turn cherished him as their own.
घटोत्कचो महाकायः पाण्डवान्पृथया सह। अभिवाद्य यथान्यायमब्रवीच्च प्रभाष्य तान्
The mighty Ghatotkacha, together with Pritha, greeted the Pandavas respectfully and spoke to them after saluting.
किं करोम्यहमार्याणां निःशङ्कं वदतानघाः। तं ब्रुवन्तं भैमसेनिं कुन्ती वचनमब्रवीत्
"What shall I do for you, noble ones? Speak without hesitation, O sinless ones." As Bhimasena's son spoke thus, Kunti replied to him.
त्वं कुरूणां कुले जातः साक्षाद्भीमसमो ह्यसि। ज्येष्ठः पुत्रोसि पञ्चानां साहाय्यं कुरु पुत्रक
"You are born in the Kuru line and are truly equal to Bhima; you are the eldest of five sons. Aid your brothers, my child."
पृथयाप्येवमुक्तस्तु प्रणम्यैव वचोऽब्रवीत्। यथा हि रावणो लोके इन्द्रजिच्च महाबलः। वर्ष्मवीर्यसमो लोके विशिष्टश्चाभवं नृषु
Thus addressed by Pritha, he bowed and replied: "As Ravana and mighty Indrajit were renowned in the world, so am I among men, equal in form and strength, and even distinguished."
कृत्यकाल उपस्थास्ये पितॄनिति घटोत्कचः। आमन्त्र्य रक्षसां श्रेष्ठः प्रतस्थे चोत्तरां दिशम्
Ghatotkacha, best of Rakshasas, said, "At the proper time, I will come to serve my fathers," and then set out toward the northern direction.
स हि सृष्टो भगवता शक्तिहेतोर्महात्मना। वर्णस्याप्रतिवीर्यस्य प्रतियोद्धा महारथः
For he was created by the blessed one, the great soul, for the sake of power, a mighty chariot-warrior, to be the peerless champion of his lineage.
सह वासो मया जीर्णस्त्वया कमलपालिके। पुनर्द्रक्ष्यसि राज्यस्थानित्यभाषत तां तदा
"I have dwelt with you, O lotus-eyed one; you will see me again when you are established in the kingdom," he said to her then.
