अर्जुनेनैवमुक्तस्तु भीमो रोषाज्ज्वलन्निव। बलमाहारयामास यद्वायोर्जगतः क्षये
Thus addressed by Arjuna, Bhima, blazing with anger, summoned his strength as if to bring about the end of the world.
ततस्तस्याम्बुदाभस्य भीमो रोषात्तु रक्षसः। अत्क्षिप्याभ्रामयद्देहं तूर्णं शतगुणं तदा
Then Bhima, enraged, seized the demon whose body was like a rain cloud, and whirled him around with a hundredfold force.
इति चोवाच संक्रुद्धो भ्रामयन्राक्षसीं तनुम्। भीमसेनो महाबाहुरभिगर्जन्मुहुर्मुहुः
And as he spun the demon's body, Bhimasena, mighty-armed, roared again and again in his fury.
नरमांसैर्वृथा पुष्टो वृथा वृद्धो वृथामतिः। वृथामरणमर्हस्त्वं वृथाद्य न भविष्यसि
You have been nourished in vain on human flesh, grown strong in vain, and your mind is vain. You deserve a vain death, and today you shall be no more.
क्षेममद्य करिष्यामि यथा वनमकण्टकम्। न पुनर्मानुषान्हत्वा भक्षयिष्यसि राक्षस
Today I will make the forest safe, free of thorns. Never again will you kill and eat humans, demon.
इत्युक्त्वा भीमसेनस्तं निष्पिष्य धरणीतले। बाहुभ्यामवपीड्याशु पशुमारममारयत्
Having spoken thus, Bhimasena crushed him to the ground, pressed him swiftly with his arms, and killed him as one would slay a beast.
स मार्यमाणो भीमेन ननाद विपुलं स्वनम्। पूरयंस्तद्वनं सर्वं जलार्द्रे इव दुन्दुभिः
As he was being subdued by Bhima, he roared with a mighty sound, filling that whole forest like a drum soaked in water.
बाहुभ्यां योक्त्रयित्वा तं बलवान्पाण्डुनन्दनः। `समुद्धाम्य शिरश्चास्य सग्रीवं तदपाहरत्
The powerful son of Pandu, having yoked him with his arms, lifted him up and struck off his head along with the neck.
ततो भित्त्वा शिरश्चास्य सग्रीवं तदुदाक्षिपत्। तस्य निष्कर्णनयनं निर्जिह्वं रुधिरोक्षितम्
Then, having severed his head with the neck, he cast it aside, its ears torn off, eyes gouged out, tongue removed, and drenched in blood.
प्राविद्धं भीमसेनेन शिरो विदशनं बभौ। प्रसारितभुजोद्धृष्टो भिन्नमांसत्वगन्तरः
The head, flung away by Bhimasena, with fangs exposed, appeared dreadful, its flesh and skin torn apart, arms outstretched in violence.
कबन्धभूतस्तत्रासीद्दनुर्वज्रहतो तथा। हिडिम्बं निहतं दृष्ट्वा संहृष्टास्ते तरस्विनः
There he lay, like a trunk struck by a thunderbolt, and seeing Hidimba slain, those mighty ones rejoiced.
हिडिम्बा सा च संप्रेक्ष्य निहतं राक्षसं रणे। अदृश्याश्चैव ये स्वस्स्थाः समेताः सर्षिचारणाः
Hidimba's sister, witnessing the demon slain in battle, and those invisible beings present—sages and celestial wanderers—
पूजयन्ति स्म तं हृष्टाः साधुसाध्विति पाण्डवम्। भ्रातरश्चापि संहृष्टा युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः
They joyfully honored the Pandava, exclaiming 'Well done, well done!' and his brothers, led by Yudhishthira, were also delighted.
अपूजयन्नरव्याघ्रं भीमसेनमरिन्दमम्।' अभिपूज्य महात्मानं भीमं भीमपराक्रमम्। पुनरेवार्जुनो वाक्यमुवाचेदं वृकोदरम्
They honored Bhimasena, the tiger among men, the destroyer of foes, and after paying homage to the great-souled Bhima of terrible prowess, Arjuna again spoke these words to Vrikodara.
अदूरे नगरं मन्ये वनादस्मादहं विभो। शीघ्रं गच्छाम भद्रं ते न नो विद्यात्सुयोधनः
O mighty one, I think there is a city not far from this forest; let us go quickly—may good befall you—so that Suyodhana does not discover us.
ततः सर्वे तथेत्युक्त्वा मात्रा सह महारथाः। प्रययुः पुरुषव्याघ्रा हिडिम्बा चैव राक्षसी
Then all those great chariot-warriors, together with their mother, said 'So be it,' and set out, the tiger-like men, along with Hidimba the rakshasi.
सा तानेवापतत्तूर्णं भगिनी तस्य रक्षसः। अब्रुवाणा हिडिम्बा तु राक्षसी पाण्डवान्प्रति
She, the sister of that demon, swiftly approached them, not speaking a word, Hidimba the rakshasi, toward the Pandavas.
अभिवाद्य ततः कुन्तीं धर्मराजं च पाण्डवम्। अभिपूज्य ततः सर्वान्भीमसेनमभाषत
Then, bowing to Kunti and to the righteous king, the Pandava, she honored them all and spoke to Bhimasena.
अहं ते दर्शादेव मन्मथस्य वशं गता। क्रूरं भ्रातृवचो हित्वा सा त्वामेवानिरुन्धती
From the moment I saw you, I have fallen under the sway of love; forsaking my cruel brother's command, I do not restrain myself from you.
राक्षसे रौद्रसङ्काशे तवापश्यं विचेष्टितम्। अहं शुश्रूषुरिच्छेयं तव गात्रं निषेवितुम्
I saw your actions, fierce as a rakshasa, and I wish to serve you, to attend to your body.
स्मरन्ति वैरं रक्षांसि मायामाश्रित्य मोहिनीम्। हिडिम्बे व्रज पन्थानं त्वमिमं भ्रातृसेवितम्
The rakshasas, relying on deluding magic, remember enmity; Hidimba, go your own way, this path frequented by your brother.
क्रुद्धोऽपि पुरुषव्याघ्र भीम मा स्म स्त्रियं वधीः। शरीरगुप्त्यभ्यधिकं धर्मं गोपाय पाण्डव
Even if you are angry, O tiger among men, Bhima, do not slay a woman; protect, O Pandava, the dharma that is higher than bodily safety.
वधाभिप्रायमायान्तमवधीस्त्वं महाबलम्। रक्षसस्तस्य भगिनी किं नः क्रुद्धा करिष्यति
You have slain the mighty demon who came with intent to kill; what can his sister do to us, even if enraged?
हिडिम्बा तु ततः कुन्तीमभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः। युधिष्ठिरं तु कौन्तेयमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Then Hidimba, bowing with joined palms to Kunti, spoke these words to Yudhishthira, son of Kunti.
आर्ये जानासि यद्दुःखमिह स्त्रीणामनङ्गजम्। तदिदं मामनुप्राप्तं भीमसेनकृते शुभे
Noble lady, you know the suffering that love brings to women; this suffering has now come upon me because of Bhimasena, O auspicious one.
सोढं तत्परमं दुःखं मया कालप्रतीक्षया। सोऽयमभ्यागतः कालो भविता मे सुखोदयः
I have endured that great pain, waiting for the right time; now that time has arrived, and happiness will dawn for me.
मया ह्युत्सृज्य सुहृदः स्वधर्मं स्वजनं तथा। वृतोऽयं पुरुषव्याघ्रस्तव पुत्रः पतिः शुभे
Having abandoned friends, my own duty, and my kin, I have chosen this tiger among men, your son, as my husband, O auspicious one.
वीरेणाऽहं तथाऽनेन त्वया चापि यशस्विनी। प्रत्याख्याता न जीवामि सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते
If I am rejected by this hero and by you, O renowned lady, I will not live; this I tell you truly.
यदर्हसि कृपां कर्तुं मयि त्वं वरवर्णिनि। मत्वा मूढेति तन्मां त्वं भक्ता वाऽनुगतेति वा
If you are able to show compassion to me, O woman of excellent complexion, whether you think me foolish or devoted and following you, please do so.
भर्त्राऽनेन महाभागे संयोजय सुतेन ह। समुपादाय गच्छेयं यथेष्टं देवरूपिणम्। पुनश्चैवानयिष्यामि विस्रम्भं कुरु मे शुभे
O greatly fortunate one, unite me with your son as his wife; after taking him, I will go wherever I wish, as if he were a god; and I will bring him back again. Place your trust in me, O auspicious one.
