अहमेको गमिष्यामि त्वामद्य यमसादनम्। अद्य मद्बलनिष्पिष्टं शिरो राक्षस दीर्यताम्। कुञ्जरस्येव पादेन विनिष्पिष्टं बलीयसाः
I alone will go with you today to Yama's abode. Today, let your head be crushed by my strength, Rākṣasa, as an elephant's is smashed by a mighty foot.
अद्य गात्राणि ते कङ्काः श्येना गोमायवस्तथा। कर्षन्तु भुवि संहृष्टा निहतस्य मया मृधे
Today, let the crows, vultures, and jackals, delighted, drag your limbs across the earth after I have slain you in battle.
क्षणेनाद्य करिष्येऽहमिदं वनमराक्षसम्। पुरा यद्दूषितं नित्यं त्वया भक्षयता नरान्
In a moment, I will make this Rākṣasa-haunted forest, which you have long defiled by devouring men, free from your pollution.
अद्य त्वां भगिनी रक्षः कृष्यमाणं मयाऽसकृत्। द्रक्ष्यत्यद्रिप्रतीकाशं सिंहेनेव महाद्विपम्
Today your sister will see you, Rākṣasa, being dragged by me—mighty as a mountain—just as a lion drags a great elephant.
निराबाधास्त्वयि हते मया राक्षसपांसन। वनमेतच्चरिष्यन्ति पुरुषा वनचारिणः
Once I have slain you, defiler of the Rākṣasa race, the men who dwell in the forest will roam here unharmed.
गर्जितेन वृथा किं ते कत्थितेन च मानुष। कृत्वैतत्कर्मणा सर्वं कत्थेया मा चिरं कृथाः
Why do you roar and boast in vain, human? Do what you say by your actions—do not delay.
बलिनं मन्यसे यच्चाप्यात्मानं सपराक्रमम्। ज्ञास्यस्यद्य समागम्य मयात्मानं बलाधिकम्
You think yourself strong and full of valor, but today, meeting me, you will know someone stronger than yourself.
न तावदेतान्हिंसिष्ये स्वपन्त्वेते यथासुखम्। एष त्वामेव दुर्बुद्धे निहन्म्यद्याप्रियंवदम्
I will not harm these others, for they sleep peacefully; but you, wicked one, who speak unpleasant words, I will slay today.
पीत्वा तवासृग्गात्रेभ्यस्ततः पश्चादिमानपि। हनिष्यामि ततः पश्चादिमां विप्रियकारिणीम्
After drinking your blood from your limbs, then I will kill this woman who has done me wrong.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो बाहुं प्रगृह्य पुरुषादकः। अभ्यद्रवत संक्रुद्धो भीमसेनमरिन्दमम्
Having spoken thus, the man-eater, seizing his arm, rushed in anger at Bhīmasena, the destroyer of enemies.
तस्याभिद्रवतस्तूर्णं भीमो भीमपराक्रमः। वेगेन प्रहितं बाहुं निजग्राह हसन्निव
As he charged swiftly, Bhīma of terrible strength seized his outstretched arm with a smile.
निगृह्य तं बलाद्भीमो विस्फुरन्तं चकर्ष ह। तस्माद्देशाद्धनूंष्यष्टौ सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगं यथा
Bhīma, overpowering him by force, dragged the struggling Rākṣasa from that place, just as a lion drags a small animal.
ततः स राक्षसः क्रुद्धः पाण्डवेन बलार्दितः। भीमसेनं समालिङ्ग्य व्यनदद्भैरवं रवम्
Then that rākṣasa, enraged and overpowered by the strength of the Pāṇḍava, seized Bhīmasena in his arms and let out a terrifying roar.
पुनर्भीमो बलादेनं विचकर्ष महाबलः। मा शब्दः सुखसुप्तानां भ्रातॄणां मे भवेदिति
Again, Bhīma, mighty in strength, dragged him forcefully, thinking, 'Let there be no sound to disturb my brothers who are sleeping peacefully.'
हस्ते गृहीत्वा तद्रक्षो दूरमन्यत्र नीतवान्। पृच्छे गृहीत्वा तुण्डेन गरुडः पन्नगं यथा
Grasping that rākṣasa in his hand, he carried him far away, just as Garuḍa, having seized a serpent in his beak, would bear it off.
अन्योन्यं तौ समासाद्य विचकर्षतुरोजसा। हिडिम्बो भीमसेनश्च विक्रमं चक्रतुः परम्
The two, confronting each other, wrestled with great vigor; Hiḍimba and Bhīmasena displayed supreme valor.
बभञ्जतुस्तदा वृक्षाँल्लताश्चाकर्षतुस्तदा। मत्ताविव चं संरब्धौ वारणौ षष्टिहायनौ
At that time, they broke trees and pulled up creepers, both furious and agitated like two intoxicated elephants in their prime.
पादपानुद्धरन्तौ तावूरुवेगेन वेगितौ। स्फोटयन्तौ लताजालान्यूरुभ्यां गृह्य सर्वशः
With the force of their thighs, those two, swift and powerful, uprooted trees, tore apart networks of creepers, grasping them entirely with their legs.
वित्रासयन्तौ तौ शब्दैः सर्वतो मृगपक्षिणः। बलेन बलिनौ मत्तावन्योन्यवधकाङ्क्षिणौ
With their shouts, the two frightened all the beasts and birds in every direction; both strong and intoxicated with might, each sought the other's destruction.
भीमराक्षसयोर्युद्धं तदाऽवर्तत दारुणम्। पुरा देवासुरे युद्धे वृत्रवासवयोरिव
A fierce battle then unfolded between Bhīma and the rākṣasa, like the ancient fight between Vṛtra and Indra among the gods and asuras.
भङूक्त्वा वृक्षान्महाशाखांस्ताडयामासतुः क्रुधा। सालतालतमालाम्रवटार्जुनविभीतकान्
Breaking off great-branched trees in their fury, they struck each other with sāla, tāla, tamāla, mango, vaṭa, arjuna, and vibhītaka trees.
न्यग्रोधप्लक्षखर्जूरपनसानश्मकण्टकान्। एतानन्यान्महावृक्षानुत्खाय तरसाऽखिलान्
They also tore up banyan, plakṣa, date, jackfruit, aśmaka, and thorny trees, and with force uprooted all the other great trees as well.
उत्क्षिप्यान्योन्यरोषेण ताडयामासतू रणे। यदाऽभवद्वनं सर्वं निर्वृक्षं वृक्षसङ्कुलम्
In mutual wrath, they hurled these at each other in battle, until the entire forest, once dense with trees, became stripped bare.
तदा शिलाश्च कुञ्जांश्च वृक्षान्कण्टकिनस्तथा। ततस्तौ गिरिशृङ्गाणि पर्वतांश्चाभ्रलेलिहान्
Then rocks, thickets, and thorny trees—after that, they hurled mountain peaks and even mountains that seemed to lick the clouds.
शैलांश्च गण्डपाषाणानुत्खायादाय वैरिणौ। चिक्षेपतुरुपर्याजावन्योन्यं विजयेषिणौ
The two enemies, uprooting boulders and rocks, seized them and hurled them at each other, both striving for victory.
तद्वनं परितः पञ्चयोजनं निर्महीरुहम्। निर्लतागुल्मपाषाणं निर्मृगं चक्रतुर्भृशम्
That forest, for five yojanas all around, they made utterly treeless, without creepers, bushes, rocks, or animals.
तयोर्युद्धेन राजेन्द्र तद्वनं भीमरक्षसोः। मुहूर्तेनाभवत्कूमर्पृष्ठवच्छ्लक्ष्णमव्ययम्
By the battle of those two—O king—the forest of Bhīma and the rākṣasa, in a moment, became smooth and even like the surface of a child's plaything.
ऊरुबाहुपरिक्लेशात्कर्षन्तावितरेतरम्। उत्कर्षन्तौ विकर्षन्तौ प्रकर्षन्तौ परस्परम्
From the strain on their thighs and arms, each dragged and pulled the other, striving and exerting themselves against one another.
तौ स्वनेन विना राजन्गर्जन्तौ च परस्परम्। पाषाणसंघट्टनिभैः प्रहारैरभिजघ्नतुः
Without any other sound, O king, the two roared at each other, striking with blows like the clash of stones.
अन्योन्यं च समालिङ्ग्य विकर्षन्तौ परस्परम्। बाहुयुद्धमभूद्धोरं बलिवासवयोरिव। युद्धसंरम्भनिर्गच्छत्फूत्काररवनिस्वनम्
Embracing and wrestling each other, they engaged in a fierce contest of arms, like Bali and Indra, their battle cries and roars resounding from the fury of combat.
