Red-eyed, mighty-armed, with hair standing up and a huge mouth, massive as a bank of clouds, with sharp fangs and terrifying appearance.
Striking palm against palm, repeatedly brandishing his arms, his eyes bulging in rage, grinding his teeth together.
Who is this fool today who hinders me as I seek to eat? Hiḍimbī does not fear, yet she was sent—why has she not returned?
Seeing him rushing in with such a dreadful appearance, Hiḍimbī, terrified, spoke these words to Bhīmasena.
He is coming, wicked-hearted, enraged, the man-eater; therefore, do as I say, together with your brothers.
I am able to move at will, O hero, endowed with rakshasa power; climb onto my hip and I will carry you through the sky.
Awaken these who are sleeping, and your mother as well, O scorcher of foes; I will take you all and depart through the sky.
Do not be afraid, broad-hipped one, as long as I am here; I will slay this one before your very eyes, slender-waisted lady.
This wretch among the rākṣasas, timid one, is not strong enough to withstand my force in battle, nor are all the rākṣasas together.
Behold my arms, well-formed and like the trunks of elephants; my thighs, resembling iron clubs, and my great, compact chest.
Today, O lovely one, you will see my prowess, equal to Indra's; do not underestimate me, broad-hipped lady, thinking me to be merely human.
Tiger among men, I do not underestimate you, who resemble a god; but among humans, I have seen the power of this rākṣasa.
O Bhārata, as Bhīmasena was thus speaking, the enraged rākṣasa man-eater heard those words.
Observing her, Hiḍimba saw her human form, adorned with garlands and ornaments in her hair, her face shining like the full moon.
With beautiful brows, nose, eyes, and hair, delicate nails and skin, adorned with all ornaments, and wearing fine garments.
Seeing her thus, bearing a most enchanting human form and suspecting her of desire for a man, the man-eater grew angry.
Greatly enraged at his sister, O best of Kurus, the rākṣasa widened his large eyes and then spoke to her these words:
Who is this wicked-minded one who hinders me when I am eager to eat? Are you not afraid, Hiḍimbā? Has my anger confused you?
Shame on you, unchaste one, who desires a man and acts against my will; you bring disgrace to all the former lords of the rākṣasas.
Because you have committed this offense against me, gathering these here under my protection, today I will slay them all together with you.
Having spoken thus to Hiḍimbā, Hiḍimba, with blood-red eyes, rushed at her to kill, gnashing his teeth together.
Seeing him roaring thus in the wilderness, Bhīmasena, destroyer of enemy heroes, watched over the awakening of his brothers and mother.
Beholding him charging, Bhīma, foremost of fighters, rebuked him with energy, saying, 'Stop, stop!'
Bhīmasena, seeing that rākṣasa, as if laughing, spoke these words to his sister, who was enraged.
What use to you, Hiḍimba, are these people, peacefully sleeping, if awakened? Attack me, you wicked-minded man-eater, with all your might.
Strike at me alone; you should not harm a woman, especially one who has done no wrong, when the offense lies with another.
This young woman is not acting of her own will, nor does she desire me here today; she is compelled by Kāma, who moves within bodies.
Your sister, O ill-behaved one, is a disgrace among Rākṣasas; by your command, and seeing my form, she now desires me.
She now desires me, frightened as she is, because of you; she is not at fault. The blame lies with Kāma, and you should not reproach her.
While I am here, wicked one, you should not harm a woman. Come, face me alone, man-eater, one against one.
