Kill all these humans and bring them to me; among those who sleep in our domain, you need not fear them.
Having torn the flesh of these humans as we wish, let us eat together; fulfill my words completely.
After eating the flesh of the humans to our heart's content, let us dance together, clapping our hands again and again.
Thus addressed by Hidimba in the great forest, Hidimbi, his sister, quickly obeyed her brother's command.
Leaping from tree to tree, she went toward the Pandavas, arriving where the Pandavas lay in the forest.
There, she saw the Pandavas with Pritha, lying down, and Bhimasena, undefeated, awake.
She saw the Parthas, handsome and youthful, attended by Bhima, delicate and worn by exertion.
She saw them afflicted by sorrow, their noble elder brothers, fierce and royal, and the prince, striking in appearance.
Seeing Bhimasena, towering like a tree trunk, the rakshasi desired him, his beauty unmatched on earth.
With her mind concealed, the rakshasi thought: 'This dark-skinned, broad-armed, lion-shouldered, radiant man...'
Let my husband be one with a neck like a conch, lotus-eyed, and worthy; I would never carry out my brother’s cruel command.
A wife’s affection for her husband is exceedingly strong, not so the bond with a brother; even my own guardian’s care brings only momentary satisfaction.
I will rejoice for countless years, having not killed these men nor been killed by them; thus resolved, Hidimba, seeing mighty Bhima, spoke.
Abandoning her rakshasa form, she assumed a human appearance; that shape-shifter, struck by desire, fashioned herself accordingly.
She approached the noble Bhimasena, flawless, skilled in gestures and expressions, drawing near slowly and quietly.
Adorned with divine ornaments, she moved like a bending vine; Bhima, too, slowly drew near as she approached him.
He saw her, delighted: slender, with full breasts, moon-faced, lotus-eyed, and dark, with curled hair.
Dark-skinned, with bright white teeth, lips like a bimba fruit, beautiful to behold; seeing her endowed with such beauty, Bhima was amazed.
Endowed with charming manners and graceful smiles, she came close to Bhima, bowing as if seeking a boon.
At the moment for speech, the radiant woman addressed Bhima, her head bowed in modesty, adorned with every ornament.
With a gentle smile, she spoke these words to Bhimasena: ‘From where have you come, and who are you, O best of men?’
Who are these men lying here, resembling gods? And who is this tall, dark, delicate woman with you, O faultless one?
She lies here, having entered the forest, trusting as if in her own home; you do not know that this dense forest is frequented by rakshasas.
Here dwells the wicked-hearted rakshasa named Hidimba.
Sent by my brother, the rakshasa, with evil intent, I was ordered to seize your flesh for him to devour.
But seeing you, radiant as one born of the gods, I desire no other husband; I speak this truth to you.
Knowing this, O righteous one, act rightly toward me; my mind is overcome by desire—accept me, who seeks you.
I will protect you, mighty-armed, from the man-eating rakshasa; let us dwell in the mountain fastnesses—be my husband, O faultless one.
O hero, I wish for your welfare—do not abandon my life! For if I am forsaken by you, O subduer of enemies, I cannot live.
I move through the sky and wander as I please; attain incomparable joy with me here and there.
