तस्मान्मुक्ता वयं दाहादिमं वृक्षमुपाश्रिताः। कां दिशं प्रतिपत्स्यामः प्राप्ताः क्लेशमनुत्तमम्
Thus freed from burning, we have taken refuge under this tree; which direction shall we go, having encountered supreme hardship?
सकामो भव दुर्बुद्धे धार्तराष्ट्राल्पदर्शन। नूनं देवाः प्रसन्नास्ते नानुज्ञां मे युधिष्ठिरः
Be satisfied, O foolish and shortsighted son of Dhritarashtra; surely the gods are pleased with you, for Yudhishthira did not grant me permission.
प्रयच्छति वधे तुभ्यं तेन जीवसि दुर्मते। नन्वद्य ससुतामात्यं सकर्णानुजसौबलम्
He gives you life, granting you escape from death; thus you live, O wicked-minded one, along with your sons, ministers, Karna, brothers, and Saubala.
गत्वा क्रोधसमाविष्टः प्रेषयिष्ये यमक्षयम्। किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यत्तेन क्रुध्यते नृपः
Having gone, filled with wrath, I will send you to the abode of Yama; but what can I do, since the king is angered by that?
धर्मात्मा पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः पापाचार युधिष्ठिरः। एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुः क्रोधसन्दीप्तमानसः
The righteous-souled, foremost Pandava, Yudhishthira, though addressed thus by the mighty-armed one whose mind was ablaze with anger, acted wickedly.
करं करेण निष्पिष्य निःश्वसन्दीनमानसः। पुनर्दीनमना भूत्वा शान्तार्चिरिव पावकः
Crushing his hand with his own, breathing heavily with a troubled heart, he became sorrowful again, like a fire with subdued flames.
भ्रातॄन्महीतले सुप्तानवैक्षत वृकोदरः। विश्वस्तानिव संविष्टान्पृथग्जनसमानिव
Vrikodara looked upon his brothers sleeping on the ground, as if they were trusting, lying together like ordinary people.
नातिदूरेण नगरं वनादस्माद्धि लक्षये। जागर्तव्ये स्वपन्तीमे हन्त जागर्म्यहंस्वयम्
I see a city not far from this forest; these are sleeping, so I must stay awake myself.
प्राश्यन्तीमे जलं पश्चात्प्रतिबुद्धा जितक्लमाः। इति भीमो व्यवस्यैव जजागार स्वयं तदा
After drinking water, they will awaken, their fatigue conquered; so, Bhima resolved to keep watch himself at that time.
तत्र तेषु शयानेषु हिडिम्बो नाम राक्षसः। अविदूरे वनात्तस्माच्छालवृक्षं समाश्रितः
While they lay sleeping, a rakshasa named Hidimba, not far from that forest, took shelter under a shala tree.
क्रूरो मानुषमांसादो महावीर्यपराक्रमः। प्रावृड्जलधरश्यामः पिङ्गाक्षो दारुणाकृतिः
Cruel, eater of human flesh, possessing great strength and prowess, dark as a rain cloud, with tawny eyes and a fierce appearance.
दष्ट्राकरालवदनः करालो भीमदर्शनः। लम्बस्फिग्लम्बजठरो रक्तश्मश्रुशिरोरुहः
With a terrifying face and fangs, dreadful to behold, with hanging buttocks and belly, blood-red beard and hair.
महावृक्षगलस्कन्धः शङ्कर्णो विभीषणः। यदृच्छया तानपश्यत्पाण्डुपुत्रान्महारथान्
With a massive tree-like shoulder, Shankarna Vibhishana, by chance, saw the Pandava sons, those great chariot-warriors.
विरूपरूपः पिङ्गाक्षः करालो घोरदर्शनः। पिशितेप्सुः क्षुधार्तश्च जिघ्रन्गन्धं यदृच्छया
Grotesque in form, with tawny eyes, fierce and terrifying in appearance, desiring flesh, and tormented by hunger, he randomly caught the scent.
ऊर्ध्वाङ्गुलिः स कण्डूयन्धुन्वन्रूक्षाञ्शिरोरुहान्। जृम्भमाणो महावक्त्रः पुनःपुनरवेक्ष्य च
Raising his fingers, scratching and shaking his coarse hair, yawning with his huge mouth, he repeatedly looked around.
हृष्टो मानुषमांसस्य महाकायो महाबलः। आघ्राय मानुषं गन्धं भगिनीमिदमब्रवीत्
Delighted at the scent of human flesh, his body immense and powerful, he inhaled the human aroma and spoke to his sister.
उपपन्नं चिरस्याद्य भक्ष्यं मम मनःप्रियम्। जिघ्रतः प्रस्रुता स्नेहाज्जिह्वा पर्येति मे मुखात्
At last, today, a suitable and long-awaited food, pleasing to my mind, has appeared; as I sniff, my tongue, out of eagerness, extends from my mouth.
अष्टौ दंष्ट्राः सुतीक्ष्णाग्राश्चिरस्यापातदुःसहाः। देहेषु मज्जयिष्यामि स्निग्धेषु पिशितेषु च
Eight fangs, with sharp tips, long unendurable, I will sink into their bodies and into their tender flesh.
आक्रम्य मानुषं कण्ठमाच्छिद्य धमनीमपि। उष्णं नवं प्रपास्यामि फेनलिं रुधिरं बहु
Seizing a human throat and cutting even the artery, I will drink the warm, fresh, frothy blood in abundance.
गच्छ जानीहि के त्वेते शेरते वनमाश्रिताः। मानुषो बलवान्गन्धो घ्राणं तर्पयतीव मे
Go, find out who these are, lying in the forest; the strong scent of humans greatly satisfies my nose.
हत्वैतान्मानुषान्सर्वानानयस्व ममान्तिकम्। अस्मद्विषयसुप्तेभ्यो नैतेभ्यो भयमस्ति ते
Kill all these humans and bring them to me; among those who sleep in our domain, you need not fear them.
एषामुत्कृत्य मांसानि मानुषाणां यथेष्टतः। भक्षयिष्याव सहितौ कुरु पूर्णं वचो मम
Having torn the flesh of these humans as we wish, let us eat together; fulfill my words completely.
भक्षयित्वा च मांसानि मानुषाणां प्रकामतः। नृत्याव सहितावावां दत्ततालावनेकशः
After eating the flesh of the humans to our heart's content, let us dance together, clapping our hands again and again.
एवमुक्ता हिडिम्बा तु हिडिम्बेन महावने। भ्रातुर्वचनमाज्ञाय त्वरमाणेव राक्षसी
Thus addressed by Hidimba in the great forest, Hidimbi, his sister, quickly obeyed her brother's command.
आप्लुत्याप्लुत्य च तरूनगच्छत्पाण्डवान्प्रति।' जगाम तत्र यत्र स्म शेरते पाण्डवा वने
Leaping from tree to tree, she went toward the Pandavas, arriving where the Pandavas lay in the forest.
ददर्श तत्र सा गत्वा पाण्डवान्पृथया सह। शयानान्भीमसेनं च जाग्रतं त्वपराजितम्
There, she saw the Pandavas with Pritha, lying down, and Bhimasena, undefeated, awake.
उपास्यमानान्भीमेन रूपयौवनशालिनः। सुकुमारांश्च पार्थान्सा व्यायामेन च कर्शितान्
She saw the Parthas, handsome and youthful, attended by Bhima, delicate and worn by exertion.
दुःखेन संप्रयुक्तांश्च सहज्येष्ठान्प्रमाथिनः। रौद्री सती राजपुत्रं दर्शनीयप्रदर्शनम्
She saw them afflicted by sorrow, their noble elder brothers, fierce and royal, and the prince, striking in appearance.
दृष्ट्वैव भीमसेनं सा सालस्कन्धमिवोद्यतम्। राक्षसी कामयामास रूपेणाप्रतिमं भुवि
Seeing Bhimasena, towering like a tree trunk, the rakshasi desired him, his beauty unmatched on earth.
अन्तर्गतेन मनसा चिन्तयामास राक्षसी'। अयं श्यामो महाबाहुः सिंहस्कन्धो महाद्युतिः
With her mind concealed, the rakshasi thought: 'This dark-skinned, broad-armed, lion-shouldered, radiant man...'
