स सुप्तां मातरं `भ्रातॄन्निद्राविद्रावितौजसः। महारौद्रे वने घोरे वृक्षमूले सुशीतले
He found his mother asleep, and his brothers, their vigor dispelled by sleep, in the dreadful, fierce forest, beneath a tree, on a cool spot.
विक्षिप्तकरपादांश्च दीर्घोच्छ्वासान्महाबलान्। ऊर्ध्ववक्त्रान्महाकायान्पञ्चेन्द्रानिव भूपते
He saw them with limbs sprawled, breathing deeply, mighty in strength, faces turned upward, bodies large, like five Indras, O king.
अज्ञातवृक्षनित्यस्थप्रेतराक्षससाध्वसान्। दृष्ट्वा वै भृशशोकार्तो बिललापानिलात्मजः
Seeing them, terrified by unknown trees, ever-present ghosts and rakshasas, the wind-born son, greatly afflicted by sorrow, lamented.
भृशं शोकपरीत्मा विललाप वृकोदरः
Greatly overwhelmed by grief, Vrikodara lamented.
अतः कष्टतरं किं नु द्रष्टव्यं हि भविष्यति। यत्पश्यामि महीसुप्तान्भ्रातॄनद्य सुमन्दभाक्
What could be more distressing than this that I must witness? Today I see my brothers lying asleep on the ground, so unfortunate.
शयनेषु परार्ध्येषु ये पुरा वारणावते। नाधिजग्मुस्तदा निद्रां तेऽद्य सुप्ता महीतले
Those who once, in Varanavata, rested on splendid beds, did not succumb to sleep then; today they lie asleep upon the earth.
स्वसारं वसुदेवस्य शत्रुसङ्घावमर्दिनः। कुन्तिराजसुतां कुन्तीं सर्वलक्षणपूजिताम्
Kunti, the sister of Vasudeva, crusher of enemy hosts, daughter of the king Kuntiraja, honored for all her virtues,
स्नुषां विचित्रवीर्यस्य भार्यां पाण्डोर्महात्मनः। तथैव चास्मज्जननीं पुण्डरीकोदरप्रभाम्
The wife of Pandu, of wondrous valor, daughter-in-law of Vichitravirya, and likewise my own mother, radiant as a lotus,
सुकुमारतरामेनां महार्हशयनोचिताम्। शयानां पश्यताऽद्येह पृथिव्यामतथोचिताम्
So delicate, accustomed to luxurious beds, now I see her lying here on the earth, unaccustomed to such hardship.
धर्मादिन्द्राच्च वाताच्च सुपुवे या सुतानिमान्। सेयं भूमौ परिश्रान्ता शेषे प्रासादशायिनी
She who bore these sons from Dharma, Indra, and Vayu, now exhausted, lies on the ground, though she once rested in palaces.
किं नु दुःखतरं शक्यं मया द्रष्टुमतः परम्। योऽहमद्य नरव्याघ्रान्सुप्तान्पश्यामि भूतले
What greater sorrow could I possibly witness than this, that today I see the tiger-like men lying asleep upon the earth?
त्रिषु लोकेषु यो राज्यं धर्मनित्योऽर्हते नृपः। सो।़यं भूमौ परिश्रान्तः शेते प्राकृतवत्कथम्
He who deserves kingship in all three worlds, ever steadfast in righteousness, O king, now lies exhausted on the ground like an ordinary man—how can this be?
अयं नीलाम्बुदश्यामो नरेष्वप्रतिमोऽर्जुनः। शेते प्राकृतवद्भूमौ ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
This Arjuna, dark as a rain cloud, peerless among men, lies on the ground like a commoner; what could be more sorrowful than this?
अश्विनाविव देवानां याविमौ रूपसंपदा। तौ प्राकृतवदद्येमौ प्रसुप्तौ धरणीतले
These two, equal to the Ashvins among the gods in beauty and splendor, today lie asleep upon the earth like ordinary men.
ज्ञातयो यस्य नै स्युर्विषमाः कुलपांसनाः। स जीवेत सुखं लोके ग्रामद्रुम इवैकजः
One whose relatives are not hostile, who does not bring disgrace upon his lineage, lives happily in the world, like a solitary tree in a village.
एको वृक्षो हि यो ग्रामे भवेत्पर्णफलान्वितः। चैत्यो भवति निर्ज्ञातिरध्वनीनैश्च पूजितः
A single tree in a village, bearing leaves and fruit, becomes a shrine, honored by travelers even though it has no kin.
येषां च बहवः शूरा ज्ञातयो धर्ममाश्रिताः। ते जीवन्ति सुखं लोके भवन्ति च निरामयाः
Those whose many relatives are valiant and devoted to righteousness live happily in the world and remain free from affliction.
बलवन्तः समृद्धार्था मित्रबान्धवनन्दनाः। जीवन्त्यन्योन्यमाश्रित्य द्रुमाः काननजा इव
Strong, prosperous, and beloved by friends and kin, they live relying upon one another, like trees born in the forest.
वयं तु धृतराष्ट्रेण दुष्पुत्रेण दुरात्मना। `राज्यलुब्धेन मूर्खेण दुर्मन्त्रिसहितेन वै
But we, by Dhritarashtra—an evil-minded, foolish son, greedy for the kingdom, surrounded by wicked counselors—
दुष्टेनाधर्मशीलेन स्वार्थनिष्ठैकबुद्धिना।' विवासिता न दग्धाश्च क्षत्तुर्बुद्धिपराक्रमात्
By one corrupt, unrighteous, whose mind is fixed only on selfish gain, we have been exiled, not burned, thanks to the wisdom and valor of the charioteer.
तस्मान्मुक्ता वयं दाहादिमं वृक्षमुपाश्रिताः। कां दिशं प्रतिपत्स्यामः प्राप्ताः क्लेशमनुत्तमम्
Thus freed from burning, we have taken refuge under this tree; which direction shall we go, having encountered supreme hardship?
सकामो भव दुर्बुद्धे धार्तराष्ट्राल्पदर्शन। नूनं देवाः प्रसन्नास्ते नानुज्ञां मे युधिष्ठिरः
Be satisfied, O foolish and shortsighted son of Dhritarashtra; surely the gods are pleased with you, for Yudhishthira did not grant me permission.
प्रयच्छति वधे तुभ्यं तेन जीवसि दुर्मते। नन्वद्य ससुतामात्यं सकर्णानुजसौबलम्
He gives you life, granting you escape from death; thus you live, O wicked-minded one, along with your sons, ministers, Karna, brothers, and Saubala.
गत्वा क्रोधसमाविष्टः प्रेषयिष्ये यमक्षयम्। किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यत्तेन क्रुध्यते नृपः
Having gone, filled with wrath, I will send you to the abode of Yama; but what can I do, since the king is angered by that?
धर्मात्मा पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः पापाचार युधिष्ठिरः। एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुः क्रोधसन्दीप्तमानसः
The righteous-souled, foremost Pandava, Yudhishthira, though addressed thus by the mighty-armed one whose mind was ablaze with anger, acted wickedly.
करं करेण निष्पिष्य निःश्वसन्दीनमानसः। पुनर्दीनमना भूत्वा शान्तार्चिरिव पावकः
Crushing his hand with his own, breathing heavily with a troubled heart, he became sorrowful again, like a fire with subdued flames.
भ्रातॄन्महीतले सुप्तानवैक्षत वृकोदरः। विश्वस्तानिव संविष्टान्पृथग्जनसमानिव
Vrikodara looked upon his brothers sleeping on the ground, as if they were trusting, lying together like ordinary people.
नातिदूरेण नगरं वनादस्माद्धि लक्षये। जागर्तव्ये स्वपन्तीमे हन्त जागर्म्यहंस्वयम्
I see a city not far from this forest; these are sleeping, so I must stay awake myself.
प्राश्यन्तीमे जलं पश्चात्प्रतिबुद्धा जितक्लमाः। इति भीमो व्यवस्यैव जजागार स्वयं तदा
After drinking water, they will awaken, their fatigue conquered; so, Bhima resolved to keep watch himself at that time.
तत्र तेषु शयानेषु हिडिम्बो नाम राक्षसः। अविदूरे वनात्तस्माच्छालवृक्षं समाश्रितः
While they lay sleeping, a rakshasa named Hidimba, not far from that forest, took shelter under a shala tree.
