Having drunk liquor, intoxicated, she and her sons, overwhelmed by drunkenness, remained there in that dwelling, O King, along with all her sons.
She slept, unconscious, like one dead, O ruler of men; then, as a fierce wind blew at night, while everyone slept.
Then Bhima set fire where Purocana lay sleeping; after that, the Pandava kindled the entrance of the house of lac.
All around and at the back, he set fire to that dwelling, having first carefully inspected the house, Bhimasena of great intelligence.
He led Kunti, together with the Pandavas, into that tunnel; then, with swift resolve, Bhima set fire all around the house.
Taking the valuables from the house, he exited through the tunnel; and the sons of Pandu, realizing the whole house was ablaze—
—quickly entered the secret passage with their mother, those subduers of foes; then a great heat and a tremendous sound arose from the fire.
At that moment, the people of the town became aware because of the great blaze and the noise; seeing the house aflame, the townsfolk, pale-faced, said—
—'By the wicked Duryodhana's command, whose mind is unrighteous, this house was built for their destruction and has now been burned.'
'Alas, shame on Dhritarashtra's judgment, which is far from just, for he has caused the burning of the pure heirs of Pandu as if they were enemies.'
'By fate, now the sinful Purocana, after burning, has himself been burned; he, trusting and innocent, set fire to the best of men.'
Thus the people of Varanavata lamented, encircling the house and standing all around it through the night.
But all the Pandavas, together with their deeply distressed mother, exited through that tunnel and went swiftly, unnoticed.
Because of exhaustion and fear, the Pandavas, scorcher of foes, were unable to proceed quickly together with their mother.
But Bhimasena, O king, of terrible speed and prowess, took up all his brothers and his mother as well.
The mighty one lifted his mother onto his shoulder, took Yudhishthira and Arjuna on his hips, and grasped his two other brothers with his hands.
Crushing trees with his chest and tearing up the earth with his feet, the radiant Vrikodara sped swiftly, like the wind.
At that very time, the wise Vidura, as he had planned, sent a trustworthy and pure man into that forest.
One who was already known and trusted by both himself and the Pandavas, to help them cross the Ganga, bearing a token of recognition.
He went as directed and found the Pandavas in the forest; then, together with their mother, he led the Kauravas' descendants to the bank of the Jahnavi.
The great-minded Vidura, of vast intelligence, knew of this; therefore, even though terrified, he discerned the evil-minded one's actions through his spies.
Then, at that time, the wise Vidura sent a learned man into exile, who showed the sons of Pritha the path swift as the wind of the mind.
He revealed a boat, able to withstand all winds, equipped with machinery and bearing a flag, built by trustworthy men on the sacred bank of the Bhagirathi.
Then again he spoke to the messenger, as previously instructed, saying, 'Yudhishthira, listen to this word of the sage, meant as a sign.'
'He who avoids the destroyer of the thicket and the destroyer of the cold, and the great burrowers in their vast holes, and who does not kill—such a one preserves himself and lives.' This is what Vidura said, and it should be understood thus.
By him I was sent, with this sign of trust; and again Vidura, the wise Kshatta, said to me, 'Rebuke the sons of Dhritarashtra and their brothers,' for he understood all matters.
'You will surely conquer Karna, Duryodhana with his brothers, and Shakuni in battle, O son of Kunti; there is no doubt.'
Then the Pandavas, having gone to the excellent bank of the Ganga, saw the heroic and supremely righteous king of the Nishadas, Dashaa.
The sons of Pandu saw the boatman, swift and eager, searching for them with lamps lighting the way.
There the Nishada informed the sons of Kunti, in the foreign tongue as instructed by the wise Vidura, so that they would not be recognized.
