भीमसेनस्तदा राजन्नर्जुनेन निवारितः। अतृप्तो युद्धधर्मेषु न्यवर्तत महाबलः
Then Bhimasena, O King, restrained by Arjuna, unsatisfied in the ways of battle, withdrew, though mighty.
ते यज्ञसेनं द्रुपदं गृहीत्वा रणमूर्धनि। उपाजग्मुः सहामात्यं द्रोणाय भरतर्षभ
They seized Yajnasena Drupada in the midst of battle and, together with his ministers, brought him to Drona, O best of Bharatas.
भग्नदर्पं हृतधनं तं तथा वशमागतम्। स वैरं मनसा ध्यात्वा द्रोणो द्रुपदमब्रवीत्
Humbled in pride, deprived of wealth, and thus brought under control, Drona, reflecting on their enmity, spoke to Drupada.
विमृज्य तरसा राष्ट्रं पुरं ते मृदितं मया। प्राप्य जीवन्रिपुवशं सखिपूर्वं किमिष्यते
With force I have destroyed your kingdom and city; now, having gained your life in the power of an enemy, what will you desire, former friend?
एवमुक्त्वा प्रहस्यैनं किंचित्स पुनरब्रवीत्। मा भैः प्राणभयाद्वीर क्षमिणो ब्राह्मणा वयम्
Having said this, he laughed and spoke again: 'Do not fear for your life, O hero; we are forgiving Brahmanas.'
आश्रमे क्रीडितं यत्तु त्वया बाल्ये मया सह। तेन संवर्धितः स्नेहः प्रीतिश्च क्षत्रियर्षभ
That play in the hermitage which you had with me in childhood fostered affection and friendship, O bull among Kshatriyas.
प्रार्थयेयं त्वया सख्यं पुनरेव जनाधिप। वरं ददामि ते राजन्राज्यस्यार्धमवाप्नुहि
I would seek friendship with you again, O lord of men; I grant you a boon, O king—receive half the kingdom.
अराजा किल नो राज्ञः सखा भवितुमर्हति। अतः प्रयतितं राज्ये यज्ञसेन मया तव
Indeed, a kingless man is not fit to be the friend of a king; therefore, I have endeavored for your kingship, Yajnasena.
राजासि दक्षिणे कूले भागीरथ्याहमुत्तरे। सखायं मां विजानीहि पाञ्चाल यदि मन्यसे
You are a king on the southern bank of the Bhagirathi, and I am on the northern; recognize me as your friend, O Panchala, if you so wish.
अनाश्चर्यमिदं ब्रह्मन्विक्रान्तेषु महात्मसु। प्रीये त्वयाऽहं त्वत्तश्च प्रीतिमिच्छामि शाश्वतीम्
O Brahman, there is nothing astonishing in this among those of great spirit; I am pleased with you, and I desire enduring friendship from you.
एवमुक्तः स तं द्रोणो मोक्षयामास भारत। सत्कृत्य चैनं प्रीतात्मा राज्यार्धं प्रत्यपादयत्
Thus addressed, Drona released him, O Bharata, honoring him with a joyful heart, and granted him half the kingdom.
माकन्दीमथ गङ्गायास्तीरे जनपदायुताम्। सोऽध्यावसद्दीनमनाः काम्पिल्यं च पुरोत्तमम्
Then, on the bank of the Ganga at Makandi, amidst ten thousand settlements, he dwelled with a sorrowful mind, and in Kampilya, the foremost city.
दक्षिणांश्चापि पञ्चालान्यावच्चर्मण्वती नदी। द्रोणेन चैवं द्रुपदः परिभूयाथ पालितः
And the southern Panchalas, up to the river Charmannvati, were subdued and protected by Drona, having humiliated Drupada.
क्षात्रेण च बलेनास्य नापश्यत्स पराजयम्। हीनं विदित्वा चात्मानं ब्राह्मेण स बलेनतु
With his Kshatriya strength, he did not see defeat; yet, knowing himself to be lacking in Brahmanical power,
पुत्रजन्म परीप्सन्वै पृथिवीमन्वसंचरत्। अहिच्छत्रं च विषयं द्रोणः समभिपद्यत
Desiring the birth of a son, he wandered the earth, and Drona approached the territory of Ahichhatra.
एवं राजन्नहिच्छत्रा पुरीजनपदायुता। युधि निर्जित्य पार्थेन द्रोणाय प्रतिपादिता
Thus, O King, the city of Ahichhatra, filled with people, was conquered in battle by Partha and given to Drona.
द्रोणेन वैरं द्रुपदो न सुष्वाप स्मरंस्तदा। क्षात्रेण वै बलेनास्य नाऽशशंसे पराजयम्
Drupada did not sleep well, remembering his enmity with Drona; with his Kshatriya strength, he did not hope for victory.
हीनं विदित्वा चात्मानं ब्राह्मेणापि बलेन च। द्रुपदोऽमर्षणाद्राजा कर्मसिद्धान्द्विजोत्तमान्
Knowing himself to be deficient in Brahmanical power, Drupada, intolerant, sought accomplished Brahmins.
अन्विच्छन्परिचक्राम ब्राह्मणावसथान्बहून्। नास्ति श्रेष्ठं ममापत्यं धिग्बन्धूनिति च ब्रुवन्
Searching, he wandered among many Brahmin dwellings, saying, 'There is no excellent offspring for me; shame upon my kin.'
निश्वासपरमो ह्यासीद्द्रोणं प्रतिचिकीर्षया। न सन्ति मम मित्राणि लोकेऽस्मिन्नास्ति वीर्यवान्
He was absorbed in sighs, intent on acting against Drona; 'I have no friends in this world, nor anyone with valor.'
पुत्रजन्म परीप्सन्वै पृथिवीमन्वयादिमाम्। प्रभावशिक्षाविनयाद्द्रोणस्यास्त्रबलेन च
Desiring the birth of a son, he wandered the earth, seeking those who, through power, knowledge, and discipline, possessed the strength of Drona's weapons.
कर्तुं प्रयतमानो वै न शशाक पराजयम्। अभितः सोऽथ कल्माषीं गङ्गातीरे परिभ्रमन्
Striving to accomplish this, he could not achieve victory; wandering about, he reached the dark banks of the Ganga.
ब्राह्मणावसथं पुण्यमाससाद महीपतिः। तत्र नास्नातकः कश्चिन्न चासीदव्रतो द्विजः
The king arrived at a sacred Brahmin dwelling; there was no one who had not completed his studies, nor any Brahmin without vows.
तथैव तौ महाभागौ सोऽपश्यच्छंसितव्रतौ। याजोपयाजौ ब्रह्मर्षी भ्रातरौ पृषतात्मजः
There, he saw those two illustrious brothers, Yaja and Upayaja, sons of rishis, steadfast in their vows.
संहिताध्ययने युक्तौ गोत्रतश्चापि काश्यपौ। अरण्ये युक्तरूपौ तौ ब्राह्मणावृषिसत्तमौ
Engaged in reciting the Samhitas, and of the Kashyapa lineage, those two Brahmins, best among the righteous, were fittingly attired in the forest.
स उपामन्त्रयामास सर्वकामैरतन्द्रितः। बुद्ध्वा तयोर्बलं बुद्धिं कनीयांसमुपह्वरे
He approached them, tireless in his pursuit of all desires, having discerned their strength and wisdom, especially the younger in the hermitage.
प्रपेदे छन्दयन्कामैरुपयाजं धृतव्रतम्। गुरुशुश्रूषणे युक्तः प्रियकृत्सर्वकामदम्
He approached Upayaja, steadfast in his vows, desiring to perform sacrifices for the fulfillment of his wishes; devoted to serving his teacher, pleasing, and able to grant all desires.
पाद्येनासनदानेन तथाऽर्घ्येण फलैश्च तम्। अर्हयित्वा यथान्यायमुपयाजोऽब्रवीत्ततः
He honored him properly with water for washing the feet, a seat, offerings, and fruits; then Upayaja spoke to him.
येन कार्यविशेषेण त्वमस्मानभिकाङ्क्षसे। कृतश्चायं समुद्योगस्तद्ब्रवीतु भवानिति
For what particular purpose do you seek us, and for which reason have you made this effort? Please tell us.
स बुद्ध्वा प्रीतिसंयुक्तमृषीणामुत्तमं तदा। उवाच छन्दयन्कामैर्द्रुपदः स तपस्विनम्
Recognizing the joy of the eminent sages, Drupada addressed the ascetic, desiring to request him.
