सिंहनादश्च संजज्ञे साधुशब्देन मिश्रितः। ततः पाञ्चालराजस्तु तथा सत्यजिता सह
There arose a lion's roar mingled with cries of praise; then the king of the Panchalas, together with Satyajit, advanced.
त्वरमाणोऽभिदुद्राव महेन्द्रं शम्बरो यथा। महता शरवर्षेण पार्थः पाञ्चालमावृणोत्
Hastening forward like Shambara against mighty Indra, Partha enveloped the Panchala with a great shower of arrows.
ततो हलहलाशब्द आसीत्पाञ्चालके बले। जिवृक्षति महासिंहे गजानामिव यूथपम्
Then a tumultuous sound arose in the Panchala army, like the roar of great lions when a leader of elephants is wounded.
दृष्ट्वा पार्थं तदायान्तं सत्यजित्सत्यविक्रमः। पाञ्चालं वै परिप्रेप्सुर्धनञ्जयमदुद्रुवत्
Seeing Partha advancing, Satyajit, steadfast in valor, rushed toward Dhananjaya, intent on protecting the Panchala.
ततस्त्वर्जुनपाञ्चालौ युद्धाय समुपागतौ। व्यक्षोभयेतां तौ सैन्यमिन्द्रवैरोचनाविव
Then Arjuna and Satyajit of the Panchalas approached for battle, shaking the armies like Indra and Virocana.
ततः सत्यजितं पार्थो दशभिर्मर्मभेदिभिः। विव्याध बवलद्गाढं तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Then Partha struck Satyajit with ten arrows that pierced his vital points; that feat appeared wondrous.
ततः शरशतैः पार्थं पाञ्चालः शीघ्रमार्दयत्। पार्थस्तु शरवर्षेण च्छाद्यमानो महारथः
Then the Panchala swiftly wounded Partha with hundreds of arrows; and Partha, that great chariot-warrior, was covered by the shower of arrows.
वेगं चक्रे महावेगो धनुर्ज्यामवमृज्य च। ततः सत्यजितश्चापं छित्वा राजानमभ्ययात्
gathered his force, stringing his mighty bow with speed; then, having cut Satyajit's bow, he advanced upon the king.
अथान्यद्धनुरादाय सत्यजिद्वेगवत्तरम्। साश्वं ससूतं सरथं पार्थं विव्याध सत्वरः
Then Satyajit took up another, more powerful bow, and swiftly struck Partha, along with his horses, charioteer, and chariot.
स तं न ममृषे पार्थः पाञ्चालेनार्दितो युधि। ततस्तस्य विनाशार्थं सत्वरं व्यसृजच्छरान्
Afflicted in battle by the Panchala, Partha could not endure it; then, aiming to destroy him, he quickly released his arrows.
हयान्ध्वजं धनुर्मुष्टिमुभौ तौ पार्ष्णिसारथी। स तथा भिद्यमानेषु कार्मुकेषु पुनः पुनः
Both the charioteer and the banner were struck, as well as the bow-grip, by the one whose horses were led by the charioteer; and as the bows were shattered again and again in this way,
हयेषु विनिकृत्तेषु विमुखोऽभवदाहवे। स सत्यजितमालेक्य तथा विमुखमाहवे
when the horses were cut down, he turned away from the battle; seeing Satyajit thus turn away in the fight,
वेगेन महता राजन्नभ्यधावत पार्षतम्। तदा चक्रे महद्युद्धमर्जुनो जयतां वरः
with great speed, O King, he rushed at the Parshata; then Arjuna, foremost among victors, engaged in a great battle.
तस्य पार्थो धनुश्छित्त्वा ध्वजं चोर्व्यामपातयत्। पञ्चभिस्तस्य विव्याध हयान्सूतं च सायकैः
Partha broke his bow and cast down his banner to the ground; with five arrows he struck his horses and the charioteer.
तत उत्सृज्य तच्चापमाददानः शरावरम्। खड्गमुद्धृत्य कौन्तेयः सिंहनादमथाकरोत्
Then, abandoning that bow and taking up a sheaf of arrows, Kaunteya raised his sword and let out a lion's roar.
पाञ्चालस्य रथस्येषामाप्लुत्य सहसाऽपतत्। पाञ्चालरथमास्थाय अवित्रस्तो धनञ्जयः
Leaping suddenly onto the Panchala's chariot, he attacked; mounting the Panchala's chariot, Dhananjaya stood fearless.
विक्षोभ्याम्भोनिधिंतार्क्ष्यस्तंनागमिव सोऽग्रहीत्। ततस्तु सर्वपाञ्चाला विद्रवन्ति दिशो दश
Like Garuda agitating the ocean, he seized him as one would a serpent; then all the Panchalas fled in every direction.
दर्शयन्सर्वसैन्यानां स बाह्वोर्बलमात्मनः। सिंहनादस्वनं कृत्वा निर्जगाम धनञ्जयः
Displaying the strength of his arms to all the armies, Dhananjaya, making the sound of a lion's roar, departed.
आयान्तमर्जुनं दृष्ट्वा कुमाराः सहितास्तदा। ममृदुस्तस्य नगरं द्रुपदस्य महात्मनः
Seeing Arjuna approaching, the princes together at that time abandoned the city of the great-souled Drupada.
संबन्धी कुरुवीराणां द्रुपदो राजसत्तमः। मा वधीस्तद्बलं भीम गुरुदानं प्रदीयताम्
Drupada, the foremost among kings and kin to the Kuru heroes, said: 'Do not kill this force; let Bhima receive the gift of the teacher.'
भीमसेनस्तदा राजन्नर्जुनेन निवारितः। अतृप्तो युद्धधर्मेषु न्यवर्तत महाबलः
Then Bhimasena, O King, restrained by Arjuna, unsatisfied in the ways of battle, withdrew, though mighty.
ते यज्ञसेनं द्रुपदं गृहीत्वा रणमूर्धनि। उपाजग्मुः सहामात्यं द्रोणाय भरतर्षभ
They seized Yajnasena Drupada in the midst of battle and, together with his ministers, brought him to Drona, O best of Bharatas.
भग्नदर्पं हृतधनं तं तथा वशमागतम्। स वैरं मनसा ध्यात्वा द्रोणो द्रुपदमब्रवीत्
Humbled in pride, deprived of wealth, and thus brought under control, Drona, reflecting on their enmity, spoke to Drupada.
विमृज्य तरसा राष्ट्रं पुरं ते मृदितं मया। प्राप्य जीवन्रिपुवशं सखिपूर्वं किमिष्यते
With force I have destroyed your kingdom and city; now, having gained your life in the power of an enemy, what will you desire, former friend?
एवमुक्त्वा प्रहस्यैनं किंचित्स पुनरब्रवीत्। मा भैः प्राणभयाद्वीर क्षमिणो ब्राह्मणा वयम्
Having said this, he laughed and spoke again: 'Do not fear for your life, O hero; we are forgiving Brahmanas.'
आश्रमे क्रीडितं यत्तु त्वया बाल्ये मया सह। तेन संवर्धितः स्नेहः प्रीतिश्च क्षत्रियर्षभ
That play in the hermitage which you had with me in childhood fostered affection and friendship, O bull among Kshatriyas.
प्रार्थयेयं त्वया सख्यं पुनरेव जनाधिप। वरं ददामि ते राजन्राज्यस्यार्धमवाप्नुहि
I would seek friendship with you again, O lord of men; I grant you a boon, O king—receive half the kingdom.
अराजा किल नो राज्ञः सखा भवितुमर्हति। अतः प्रयतितं राज्ये यज्ञसेन मया तव
Indeed, a kingless man is not fit to be the friend of a king; therefore, I have endeavored for your kingship, Yajnasena.
राजासि दक्षिणे कूले भागीरथ्याहमुत्तरे। सखायं मां विजानीहि पाञ्चाल यदि मन्यसे
You are a king on the southern bank of the Bhagirathi, and I am on the northern; recognize me as your friend, O Panchala, if you so wish.
अनाश्चर्यमिदं ब्रह्मन्विक्रान्तेषु महात्मसु। प्रीये त्वयाऽहं त्वत्तश्च प्रीतिमिच्छामि शाश्वतीम्
O Brahman, there is nothing astonishing in this among those of great spirit; I am pleased with you, and I desire enduring friendship from you.
