They were running, shouting, and crying out against the Pandavas; and the Pandavas, hearing the cries of the distressed, felt their hair stand on end.
Then, after saluting Drona, they mounted their chariots, quickly restraining Yudhishthira, saying, 'Do not fight, O Pandava.'
The sons of Madri took up the defense, and Phalguna acted likewise; Bhimasena, leader of the army, stood with his mace.
Then, hearing the enemy's cries, the faultless Kaunteya, together with his brothers, advanced swiftly in his chariot, resounding in all directions.
After that, Bhimasena, of mighty arms, like Death with a staff, entered the Panchala army, whose roar was like a stormy sea.
He entered the great army, filled with fourfold forces, like a makara entering the ocean during that festival of battle.
Bhima himself, wielding the mace, rushed against the elephant division.
That skilled warrior Partha, fierce in the strength of his arms, struck the elephant division with his mace, assuming the form of Death.
Those elephants, resembling mountains, shed much blood, their heads shattered by Bhimasena's mace.
The elephants fell to the ground like mountains struck by thunderbolts; the Pandava caused elephants, horses, and chariots to fall.
The elder brother of Arjuna slew foot soldiers and charioteers, like a cowherd with a staff striking herds of cattle in the forest.
Vrikodara shook and moved chariots and elephants, while Phalguna, intent on pleasing Bharadvaja, acted likewise.
The son of Pandu released a shower of arrows upon Parshata, striking down hosts of horses, chariots, and elephants on all sides.
He felled them in battle like a blazing fire at the end of an age; then the Panchalas and the Srinjayas were struck down.
Covering Partha completely with swift arrows of many kinds, they roared like lions and engaged the Pandava in combat.
That battle became fierce and wondrous to behold; hearing the lion-like roars, the son of Pandu could not endure it.
Then the one with the diadem swiftly charged at the Panchalas in battle, covering them with a great shower of arrows, as if confounding them.
As he quickly drew and released arrows without pause, nothing could be seen of the illustrious son of Kunti.
Neither the directions, nor the sky, nor the earth could be seen there, O great king; nothing at all was visible in that conflict.
From the Panchalas and Kurus arose shouts of 'Well done! Well done!' and the sound of drums and the great blare of conchs.
There arose a lion's roar mingled with cries of praise; then the king of the Panchalas, together with Satyajit, advanced.
Hastening forward like Shambara against mighty Indra, Partha enveloped the Panchala with a great shower of arrows.
Then a tumultuous sound arose in the Panchala army, like the roar of great lions when a leader of elephants is wounded.
Seeing Partha advancing, Satyajit, steadfast in valor, rushed toward Dhananjaya, intent on protecting the Panchala.
Then Arjuna and Satyajit of the Panchalas approached for battle, shaking the armies like Indra and Virocana.
Then Partha struck Satyajit with ten arrows that pierced his vital points; that feat appeared wondrous.
Then the Panchala swiftly wounded Partha with hundreds of arrows; and Partha, that great chariot-warrior, was covered by the shower of arrows.
gathered his force, stringing his mighty bow with speed; then, having cut Satyajit's bow, he advanced upon the king.
Then Satyajit took up another, more powerful bow, and swiftly struck Partha, along with his horses, charioteer, and chariot.
Afflicted in battle by the Panchala, Partha could not endure it; then, aiming to destroy him, he quickly released his arrows.
