विचितानि च सर्वाणि ह्युद्यानानि नदीस्तथा
All the gardens and even the rivers have been thoroughly searched.
उवाच बलवान्क्षत्तर्भीमसेनो न दृश्यते
The powerful Kshatta (Vidura) said: 'Bhimasena is not to be seen.'
उद्यानान्निर्गताः सर्वे भ्रातरो भ्रातृभिः सह। तत्रैकस्तु महाबाहुर्भीमो नाभ्येति मामिह
All the brothers have come out of the gardens together with their siblings; but here, the mighty-armed Bhima alone does not return to me.
न च प्रीणयते चक्षुः सदा दुर्योधनस्य सः। क्रूरोऽसौ दुर्मतिः क्षुद्रो राज्यलुब्धोऽनपत्रपः
He never pleases the eye of Duryodhana; that one is cruel, evil-minded, petty, greedy for the kingdom, and shameless.
निहन्यादपि तं वीरं जातमन्युः सुयोधनः। तेन मे व्याकुलं चित्तं हृदयं दह्यतीव च
If angered, Suyodhana (Duryodhana) might even kill that heroic one; because of this, my mind is troubled and my heart feels as if it burns.
मैवं वदस्व कल्याणि शेषसंरक्षणं कुरु। प्रत्यादिष्टो हि दुष्टात्मा शेषेऽपि प्रहरेत्तव
Do not speak so, O noble lady; protect the rest of your sons. For that wicked-hearted one, even when warned, might attack your remaining children.
दीर्घायुषस्तव सुता यथोवाच महामुनिः। आगमिष्यति ते पुत्रः प्रीतिं चोत्पादयिष्यति
Your sons are destined for long life, as the great sage has said; your son will return and bring you joy.
एवमुक्त्वा ययौ विद्वान्विदुरः स्वं निवेशनम्। कुन्ती चिन्तापरा भूत्वा सहासीना सुतैर्गृहे
Having spoken thus, the wise Vidura went to his own residence; Kunti, filled with anxiety, sat at home with her sons.
ततोऽष्टमे तु दिवसे प्रत्यबुध्यत पाण्डवः। तस्मिंस्तदा रसे जीर्णे सोऽप्रमेयबलो बली
Then, on the eighth day, the Pandava awoke; his strength beyond measure, he had now digested that potion.
तं दृष्ट्वा प्रतिबुध्यन्तं पाण्डवं ते भुजङ्गमाः। सान्त्वयामासुरव्यग्रा वचनं चेदमब्रुवन्
Seeing the Pandava awaken, the serpents, anxious, comforted him and spoke these words:
यत्ते पीतो महाबाहो रसोऽयं वीर्यसंभृतः। तस्मान्नागायुतबलो रणेऽधृष्यो भविष्यसि
'O mighty-armed one, the potion you drank is full of strength; because of it, you will possess the strength of ten thousand nagas and be invincible in battle.'
गच्छाद्य त्वं च स्वगृहं स्नातो दिव्यैरिमैर्जलैः। भ्रातरस्तेऽनुतप्यन्ति त्वां विना कुरुपुङ्गव
'Now go to your home today, bathed in these divine waters; your brothers, O best of the Kurus, are grieving without you.'
ततः स्नातो महाबाहुः शुचिशुक्लाम्बरस्रजः। ततो नागस्य भवने कृतकौतुकमङ्गलः
Then, having bathed, the mighty-armed one, pure and adorned in spotless white garments and garlands, performed auspicious rites in the naga's mansion.
ओषधीभिर्विषघ्नीभिः सुरभीभिर्विशेषतः। भुक्तवान्परमान्नं च नागैर्दत्तं महाबलः
He, endowed with great strength, ate supreme food given by the nagas, especially fragrant and purified by antidotal herbs.
पूजितो भुजगैर्वीर आशीर्भिश्चाभिनन्दितः। दिव्याभरणसंछन्नो नागानामन्त्र्य पाण्डवाः
Honored by the serpents and greeted with their blessings, the hero, adorned with divine ornaments, took leave of the Nagas, O Pandava.
उदतिष्ठत्प्रहृष्टात्मा नागलोकादरिन्दमः। उत्क्षिप्य च तदा नागैर्जलाज्जलरुहेक्षणः
With his spirit elated, the subduer of foes rose up from the realm of the Nagas; then, lifted by the serpents from the water, his eyes shone like lotus petals.
तस्मिन्नेव वनोद्देशे स्थापितः कुरुनन्दनः। ते चान्तर्दधिरे नागाः पाण्डवस्यैव पश्यतः
In that very part of the forest, the son of Kuru was set down; and the Nagas vanished from sight as the Pandavas looked on.
तत उत्थाय कौन्तेयो भीमसेनो महाबलः। आजगाम महाबाहुर्मातुरन्तिकमञ्जसा
Then Bhimasena, son of Kunti and mighty in strength, arose and swiftly came to his mother, his powerful arms at his sides.
ततोऽभिवाद्य जननीं ज्येष्ठं भ्रातरमेव च। कनीयसः समाघ्राय शिरस्स्वरिविमर्दनः
Thereupon, bowing to his mother and his eldest brother, he embraced his younger brothers, pressing their heads with affection.
तैश्चापि संपरिष्वक्तः सह मात्रा नरर्षभैः। अन्योन्यगतसौहार्दाद्दिष्ट्या दिष्ट्येति चाब्रुवन्
He too was embraced by those bull-like men together with their mother, and, rejoicing in their mutual affection, they exclaimed again and again, 'By fortune, by fortune!'
ततस्तत्सर्वमाचष्ट दुर्योधनविचेष्टितम्। भ्रातॄणां भीमसेनश्च महाबलपराक्रमः
Then Bhimasena, mighty in prowess, recounted to his brothers all the deeds of Duryodhana.
नागलोके च यद्वृत्तं गुणदोषमशेषतः। तच्च सर्वमशेषेण कथयामास पाण्डवः
And all that had happened in the world of the Nagas, both the merits and the faults, the Pandava narrated in full.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा भीममाह वचोऽर्थवत्। तूष्णीं भव न ते जल्प्यमिदं कार्यं कथंचन
Then King Yudhishthira spoke meaningful words to Bhima: 'Remain silent; under no circumstances should you speak of this matter.'
इतःप्रभृति कौन्तेयं रक्षतान्योन्यमादृताः। एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुर्धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः
'From now on, O son of Kunti, let us protect one another with care.' Having spoken thus, the mighty-armed, righteous king Yudhishthira—
भ्रातृभिः सहितः सर्वैरप्रमत्तोऽभवत्तदा। यदा त्ववगतास्ते वै पाण्डवास्तस्य कर्म तत्
—from that time became ever vigilant together with all his brothers; and when the Pandavas understood that deed, they—
नत्वेव बहुलं चक्रुः प्रयता मन्त्ररक्षणे। धर्मात्मा विदुरस्तेषां प्रददौ मतिमान्मतिम्
—did not make great efforts to guard their counsel; but the righteous Vidura, wise among them, gave them prudent advice.
दुर्योधनोऽपि तं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवं पुनरागतम्। निश्वसंश्चिन्तयंश्चैवमहन्यहनि तप्यते
And Duryodhana, seeing the Pandava returned once more, sighed and brooded, tormented day after day.
कुमारान्क्रीडमानांस्तान्दृष्ट्वा राजातिदुर्मदान्। गुरुं शिक्षार्थमन्विष्य गौतमं तान्न्यवेदयत्
Seeing those princes, so proud, playing together, the king sought out the teacher Gautama and entrusted them to him for instruction.
शरस्तम्बे समुद्भूतं वेदशास्त्रार्थपारगम्। `राज्ञा निवेदितास्तस्मै ते च सर्वे च निष्ठिताः।' अधिजग्मुश्च कुरवो धनुर्वेदं कृपात्तु ते
He, versed in the meaning of the Vedas and scriptures, was born from a clump of arrows; the king entrusted them to him, and all the Kurus learned the science of archery from Kripa.
कृपस्यापि मम ब्रह्मन्संभवं वक्तुमर्हसि। शरस्तम्बात्कथं जज्ञे कथं वाऽस्त्राण्यवाप्तवान्
O Brahman, you ought to tell me of Kripa's origin as well—how he was born from the clump of arrows, and how he obtained his weapons.
