स तु कामपरीतात्मा तं शापं नान्वबुध्यत। माद्रीं मैथुनधर्मेण सोऽन्वगच्छद्बलादिव
Overcome by desire, he did not recall the curse, and united with Mādrī in the act of love, as if compelled by force.
जीवितान्ताय कौरव्य मन्मथस्य वशं गतः। शापजं भयमुत्सृज्य विधिना संप्रचोदितः
Swayed by passion, disregarding the fear of the curse, and driven by fate, he moved towards the end of his life, O Kauravya.
तस्य कामात्मनो बुद्धिः साक्षात्कालेन मोहिता। संप्रमथ्येन्द्रियग्रामं प्रनष्टा सह चेतसा
His mind, overpowered by desire and deluded by fate itself, lost all discernment, as his senses and awareness were overcome.
स तया सह संगम्य भार्यया कुरुनन्दनः। पाण्डुः परमधर्मात्मा युयुजे कालधर्मणा
Thus, Pāṇḍu, the most righteous, united with his wife Mādrī, O joy of the Kurus, and was seized by the law of time.
ततो माद्री समालिङ्ग्य राजानं गतचेतसम्। मुमोच दुःखजं शब्दं पुनः पुनरतीव हि
Then Mādrī, embracing the king whose senses had departed, cried out again and again in deep sorrow.
सह पुत्रैस्ततः कुन्ती माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ। आजग्मुः सहितास्तत्र यत्र राजा तथागतः
Thereafter, Kuntī together with her sons, and the two sons of Mādrī, all came to where the king lay thus.
ततो माद्र्यब्रवीद्राजन्नार्ता कुन्तीमिदं वचः। एकैव त्वमिहागच्छ तिष्ठन्त्वत्रैव दारकाः
Then, O King, Mādrī, distressed, spoke these words to Kuntī: 'You alone should go from here; let the children remain here.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्यास्तत्रैवाधाय दरकान्। हता।हमिति विक्रुश्च सहसैवाजगाम सा
Hearing her words, she left the children there, cried out, 'I am lost!' and suddenly went.
दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुं च माद्रीं च शयानौ धरणीतले। कुन्ती शोकपरीताङ्गी विललाप सुदुःखिता
Seeing Pāṇḍu and Mādrī lying on the ground, Kuntī, her body seized by grief, lamented in deep sorrow.
रक्ष्यमाणो मया नित्यं वीरः सततमात्मवान्। कथं त्वामत्यतिक्रान्तः शापं जानन्वनौकसः
Though I always protected you, O steadfast hero, how did you, knowing the curse, transgress it, dwelling in the forest?
ननु नाम त्वया माद्रि रक्षितव्यो नराधिपः। सा कथं लोभितवती विजने त्वं नराधिपम्
Surely, Mādrī, it was your duty to protect the king; how then, in solitude, were you tempted and led the king astray?
कथं दीनस्य सततं त्वामासाद्य रहोगताम्। तं विचिन्तयतः शापं प्रहर्षः समजायत
How, finding you alone, did he, always afflicted, feel joy while thinking of the curse?
धन्या त्वमसि बाह्लीकि मत्तो भाग्यतरा तथा। दृष्टवत्यसि यद्वक्त्रं प्रहृष्टस्य महीपतेः
Blessed are you, O Bāhlīka's daughter, and more fortunate than I, for you beheld the face of the delighted king.
विलपन्त्या मया देवि वार्यमाणेन चासकृत्। आत्मा न वारितोऽनेन सत्यं दिष्टं चिकीर्षुणा
Though I, O lady, tried again and again to restrain him as he lamented, his self was not restrained, truly, by the will of fate.
तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कुन्ती शोकाग्निदीपिता। पपात सहसा भूमौ छिन्नमूल इव द्रुमः
Hearing these words, Kuntī, consumed by the fire of grief, suddenly fell to the ground like a tree with its roots cut.
निश्चेष्टा पतिता भूमौ मोहेन न चचाल सा। तस्मिन्क्षणे कृतस्नानमहताम्बरसंवृतम्
Fallen motionless on the ground, she did not stir, overcome by faintness; at that moment, after bathing and donning great garments—
अलङ्कारकृतं पाण्डुं शयानं शयने शुभे। कुन्तीमुत्थाप्य माद्री तु मोहेनाविष्टचेतनाम्
Having adorned Pāṇḍu, who lay on a splendid bed, Mādrī raised Kuntī, whose senses were overcome by faintness.
आर्ये एहीति तां कुन्तीं दर्शयामास कौरव। पादयोः पतिता कुन्ती पुनरुत्थाय भूमिपम्
O Kaurava, saying, 'Noble lady, come,' Mādrī showed Kuntī; Kuntī, rising again, fell at the king's feet.
रक्तचन्दनदिग्धांङ्गं महारजनवाससम्। सस्मितेन च वक्त्रेण वदन्तमिव भारतम्
His limbs anointed with red sandal, clad in fine yellow garments, with a smiling face as if speaking—
परिरभ्य ततो मोहाद्विललापाकुलेन्द्रिया। माद्री चापि समालिङ्ग्य राजानं विललाप सा
Then, out of delusion, embracing him, her senses bewildered, she lamented; and Mādrī too, embracing the king, wept.
तं तथा शायिनं पुत्रा ऋषयः सह चारणैः। अभ्येत्य सहिताः सर्वे शोकादश्रूण्यवर्तयन्
The sons, together with the sages and celestial singers, approached him as he lay thus, and all, overwhelmed by grief, shed tears.
अस्तं गतमिवादित्यं संशुष्कमिव सागरम्। दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुं नरव्याघ्रं शोचन्ति स्म महर्षयः
Seeing Pāṇḍu, tiger among men, as if the sun had set, as if the ocean had dried up, the great sages grieved.
समानशोका ऋषयः पाण्डवाश्च बभूविरे। ते समाश्वासिते विप्रैर्विलेपतुरनिन्दिते
The sages and the Pāṇḍavas shared the same grief; comforted by the wise, they lamented the blameless ones.
हा राजन्कस्य नो हित्वा गच्छसि त्रिदशालयम्। हा राजन्मम मन्दायाः कथं माद्रीं समेत्य वै
Alas, O king, for whose sake do you leave us and go to the abode of the gods? Alas, O king, how, meeting Mādrī, did you—
निधनं प्राप्तवान्राजन्मद्भाग्यपरिसंक्षयात्। युधिष्ठिरं भीमसेनमर्जुनं च यमावुभौ
O King, having reached his end due to the exhaustion of my good fortune, Pandu has departed, leaving behind Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, Arjuna, and the twin sons.
कस्य हित्वा प्रियान्पुत्रान्प्रयातोऽसि विशांपते। नूनं त्वां त्रिदशा देवाः प्रतिनन्दन्ति भारत
For whose sake, O lord of the people, have you abandoned your beloved sons and departed? Surely, the gods are now welcoming you, O descendant of Bharata.
यतो हि तप उग्रं वै चरितं ब्रह्मसंसदि। आवाभ्यां सहितो राजन्गमिष्यसि दिवं शुभम्
Because you performed severe austerities in the assembly of Brahman, O King, together with us you will attain the blessed heavens.
आजमीढाजमीढानां कर्मणा चरतां गतिम्। ननु नाम सहावाभ्यां गमिष्यामीति यत्त्वया
The path attained by the Ajamīḍhas through their deeds—surely, you said you would go there together with us.
प्रतिज्ञाता कुरुश्रेष्ठ यदाऽस्मि वनमागता। आवाभ्यां चैव सहितो गमिष्यसि विशांपते। मुहूर्तं क्षम्यतां राजन्द्रक्ष्येऽहं च मुखं तव
O best of the Kurus, when I came to the forest, you promised that you would go together with us, O lord of the people. Grant me a moment, O King, so I may see your face.
विलपित्वा भृशं चैव निःसंज्ञे पतिते भुवि। यथा हते मृगे मृग्यौ लुब्धैर्वनगते तथा
Lamenting greatly, she fell unconscious to the ground, just as a hunted deer collapses in the forest when struck by hunters.
