Bhimasena was fifteen, and Vibhatsu was fourteen; the twins, at thirteen years, went to Hastinapura.
There, they dwelt with the sons of Dhritarashtra for thirteen years; after six months in the house of lac, Ghatotkacha was born.
Six months they stayed in Ekachakra, and a year in the house of a Panchala; after living with the sons of Dhritarashtra for five years, O Bharata,
They dwelt in Indraprastha for twenty-three years; then, having been defeated at dice, they spent twelve years and one more.
Having enjoyed the earth bounded by the sea for thirty-six years, all those great souls, devoted to Krishna, in six months—
Having established Parikshit in the kingdom, they attained the destined path; thus, Yudhishthira's lifespan was one hundred and eight years.
Keshava was older than Arjuna by three months, O radiant one; Sankarshana was older than Krishna by three months, O mighty one.
Pandu, the fifth and most radiant, rejoiced greatly with his two wives, accompanied by the sage Kashyapa, as he beheld his sons on the mountain.
When the forest was in full bloom, during the springtime of Madhu and Mādhava, and the fourteenth year of the wise Pāṇḍu's exile was complete,
On the very same lunar mansion in which the wise Pārtha was born, during the auspicious ceremony of Uttaraphalgunī,
Kuntī, preoccupied with serving food to the brāhmaṇas together with the family priest, forgot her duty of vigilance.
Then Pāṇḍu, relying on his own strength, beheld his five handsome sons in the beautiful mountain forest.
Once, during the blossoming season of Madhu and Mādhava, the king wandered the forest with his wife, in a place that enchanted all beings.
With palāśa, tilaka, mango, campaka, pāribhadra, and many other trees abundant with fruit and flowers,
Adorned with various pools and blooming lotuses, that forest of Pāṇḍu, when beheld, stirred love in his heart.
There, as he wandered joyfully like a god, Mādrī followed him alone, wearing beautiful garments.
Seeing her, youthful and lightly clad, desire arose in him in that secluded place, like fire suddenly kindled.
Seeing her alone in secret, the king, his eyes like lotuses, was overpowered by desire and could not restrain himself.
Then, in the eighteenth year, during the proper season, Pāṇḍu, his mind seized, summoned the illustrious Mādrī, adorned for union.
Thereupon, the king seized her by force in that secluded spot, though the queen struggled and tried to resist him as best she could.
Overcome by desire, he did not recall the curse, and united with Mādrī in the act of love, as if compelled by force.
Swayed by passion, disregarding the fear of the curse, and driven by fate, he moved towards the end of his life, O Kauravya.
His mind, overpowered by desire and deluded by fate itself, lost all discernment, as his senses and awareness were overcome.
Thus, Pāṇḍu, the most righteous, united with his wife Mādrī, O joy of the Kurus, and was seized by the law of time.
Then Mādrī, embracing the king whose senses had departed, cried out again and again in deep sorrow.
Thereafter, Kuntī together with her sons, and the two sons of Mādrī, all came to where the king lay thus.
Then, O King, Mādrī, distressed, spoke these words to Kuntī: 'You alone should go from here; let the children remain here.'
Hearing her words, she left the children there, cried out, 'I am lost!' and suddenly went.
Seeing Pāṇḍu and Mādrī lying on the ground, Kuntī, her body seized by grief, lamented in deep sorrow.
Though I always protected you, O steadfast hero, how did you, knowing the curse, transgress it, dwelling in the forest?
