कथं तु संभवस्तस्या दुःशलाया वदस्व मे। यथावदिह विप्रर्षे परं मेऽत्र कुतूहलम्
Tell me, how did Duḥśalā come to be? Speak to me as it truly happened, O best of Brahmins, for I am most curious about this.
साध्वयं प्रश्न उद्दिष्टः पाण्डवेय ब्रवीमि ते। तां मांसपेशीं भगवान्स्वयमेव महातपाः
O son of Pandu, your question is well asked; I will tell you. The blessed, great ascetic himself divided that flesh-mass.
शीताभिरद्भिरासिच्य भागं भागमकल्पयत्। यो यथा कल्पितो भागस्तंत धात्र्या तथा नृप
Sprinkling it with cold water, he apportioned it into equal parts; as each portion was made, it was given to a nurse, O king.
घृतपूर्णेषु कुण्डेषु एकैकं प्राक्षिपत्तदा। एतस्मिन्नन्तरे साध्वी गान्धारी सुदृढव्रता
Then he placed each portion into a separate pot filled with ghee; meanwhile, the virtuous Gandhari, firm in her vows—
दुहितुः स्नेहसंयोगमनुध्याय वराङ्गना। `नाब्रवीत्तमृषिं किंचिद्गौरवाच्च यशस्विनी।' मनसा चिन्तयद्देवी एतत्पुत्रशतं मम
Thinking constantly of her daughter's affection, that noble lady did not say anything to the sage out of respect, but in her mind, the queen thought: 'May I have a hundred sons.'
भविष्यति न संदेहो न ब्रवीत्यन्यथा मुनिः। ममेयं परमा तुष्टिर्दुहिता मे भवेद्यदि
There is no doubt that this would happen, for the sage does not speak otherwise; but my greatest satisfaction would be if I had a daughter.
एका शताधिका बाला भविष्यति कनीयसी। ततो दौहित्रजाल्लोकादबाह्योऽसौ पतिर्मम
There will be one girl, younger by a hundred, and from her, through her son, my lineage will continue beyond this world; he will not be an outsider, but my own daughter's husband.
अधिका किल नारीणां प्रीतिर्जामातृजा भवेत्। यदि नाम ममापि स्याद्दुहितैका शताधिका
It is said that a woman's affection is greater for her daughter's son-in-law; if only I too might have a single daughter, younger by a hundred.
कृतकृत्या भवेयं वै पुत्रदौहित्रसंवृता। यदि सत्यं तपस्तप्तं दत्तं वाऽप्यथवा हुतम्
I would be fulfilled, surrounded by sons and grandsons, if my austerities, gifts, or offerings have truly borne fruit.
गुरवस्तोषिता वापि तथाऽस्तु दुहिता मम। एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु कृष्णद्वैपायनः स्वयम्
Or if I have pleased my elders, then let it be so: let me have a daughter.
व्यभजत्स तदा पेशीं भगवानृषिसत्तमः। `गण्यमानेषु कुण्डेषु शते पूर्णे महात्मना
At that very moment, Krishna Dvaipayana, the illustrious sage, himself divided that mass of flesh, counting out a hundred full portions into the jars.
अभवच्चापरं खण्डं वामहस्ते तदा किल।' गणयित्वा शतं पूर्णमंशानामाह सौबलीम्
Then, in his left hand, there remained one more piece; after counting out a hundred complete portions, he spoke to the daughter of Subala.
पूर्णं पुत्रशतं त्वेतन्न मिथ्या वागुदाहृता। दैवयोगाच्च भागैकः परिशिष्टः शतात्परः
"A full hundred sons will be yours; this word is not false. By divine arrangement, one portion remains, beyond the hundred."
एषा ते सुभगा कन्या भविष्यति यतेप्सिता
"This fortunate girl will be your daughter, just as you desired."
तं चापि प्राक्षिपत्तत्र कन्याभागं तपोधनः। `संभूता चैव कालेन सर्वेषां च यवीयसी
The ascetic then placed that portion, the share for a daughter, there as well; and in due time, she was born, the youngest of them all.
ऐतत्ते कथितं राजन्दुःशलाजन्म भारत। ब्रूहि राजेन्द्र किं भूयो वर्तयिष्यामि तेऽनघ
Thus, O Bharata, I have told you of the birth of Duḥśalā. Tell me, O king, what more you wish to hear, and I shall relate it to you, O sinless one.
ज्येष्ठाऽनुज्येष्ठतां तेषां नामानि च पृथक्पृथक्। धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राणामानुपूर्व्यात्प्रकीर्तय
Now recount, in order, the seniority and names of Dhritarashtra's sons, one by one.
दुर्योधनो युयुत्सुश्च राजन्दुःशासनस्तथा। दुःसहो दुःशलश्चैव जलसन्धः समः सहः
Duryodhana, Yuyutsu, O king, Duḥśāsana, Duḥsaha, Duḥśala, Jalasandha, Sama, and Saha;
विन्दानुविन्दौ दुर्धर्षः सुबाहुर्दुष्प्रधर्षणः। दुर्मर्षणो दुर्मुखश्च दुष्कर्णः कर्ण एव च
Vindānuvinda, Durdharṣa, Subāhu, Duṣpradharṣaṇa, Durmarṣaṇa, Durmukha, Duṣkarṇa, and Karṇa himself;
विविंशतिर्विकर्णश्च शलः सत्वः सुलोचनः। चित्रोपचित्रौ चित्राक्षश्चारुचित्रः शरासनः
Viviṃśati, Vikarna, Śala, Satva, Sulocana, Citropacitra, Citrākṣa, Cārucitra, and Śarāsana;
दुर्मदो दुर्विगाहश्च विवित्सुर्विकटाननः। ऊर्णनाभः सुनाभश्च तथा नन्दोपनन्दकौ
Durmada, Durvigāha, Vivitsu, Vikaṭānana, Ūrṇanābha, Sunābha, and likewise Nanda and Upananda;
चित्रबाणश्चित्रवर्मा सुवर्मा दुर्विमोचनः। अयोबाहुर्महाबाहुश्चित्राङ्गश्चित्रकुण्डलः
Citrabāṇa, Citravarman, Suvarman, Durvimocana, Ayobāhu, Mahābāhu, Citrāṅga, and Citrakuṇḍala;
भीमवेगो भीमबलो बलाकी बलवर्धनः। उग्रायुधः सुषेणश्च कुण्डधारो महोदरः
Bhīmavega, Bhīmabala, Balākī, Balavardhana, Ugrāyudha, Suṣeṇa, Kuṇḍadhāra, and Mahodara;
चित्रायुधो निषङ्गी च पाशी वृन्दारकस्तथा। दृढवर्मा दृढक्षत्रः सोमकीर्तिरनूदरः
Citrāyudha, Niṣaṅgī, Pāśī, Vṛndāraka, Dṛḍhavarman, Dṛḍhakṣatra, Somakīrti, and Anūdara.
दृढसन्धो जरासन्धः सत्यसन्धः सदः सुवाक्। उग्रश्रवा उग्रसेनः सेनानीर्दुष्पराजयः
Jarasandha, firm in his alliances, ever true to his word, eloquent in assembly, famed for his fierce renown, mighty in his army, and difficult to defeat in battle.
अपराजितः कुण्डशायी विशालाक्षो दुराधरः। दृढहस्तः सुहस्तश्च वातवेगसुवर्चसौ
Unconquered, resting upon a bed of spikes, broad-eyed, hard to subdue, strong-handed, skilled-handed, possessing the vigor and brilliance of the wind.
आदित्यकेतुर्बह्वाशी नागदत्तोऽग्रयाय्यपि। कवची क्रथनः कुण्डी कुण्डधारो धनुर्धरः
Bearing the banner of the sun, voracious, gifted with serpents, foremost among those worthy of honor, armored, a crusher, adorned with earrings, bearer of earrings, and skilled with the bow.
उग्रभीमरथौ वीरौ वीरबाहुरलोलुपः। अभयो रौद्रकर्मा च तथा दृढरथाश्रयः
Fierce and terrible on the chariot, heroic, strong-armed, insatiable, fearless, performer of dreadful deeds, and steadfast in his chariot.
अनाधृष्यः कुण्डभेदी विरावी चित्रकुण्डलः। प्रमथश्च प्रमाथी च दीर्घरोमश्च वीर्यवान्
Unassailable, breaker of earrings, loud-voiced, adorned with brilliant earrings, a subduer and a destroyer, long-haired, and full of vigor.
दीर्घबाहुर्महाबाहुर्व्यूढोराः कनकध्वजः। कुण्डाशी विराजाश्चैव दुःशला च शताधिका
Long-armed, mighty-armed, broad-chested, bearing a golden banner, eater of earrings, resplendent, and Duḥśalā, who surpassed a hundred.
