कैलासारोहणं प्रोक्तं यत्र यक्षैर्बलोत्कटैः। युद्धमासीन्महाघोरं मणिमत्प्रमुखैः सह
The ascent of Kailasa is told, where a terrible battle took place with the powerful yakshas led by Maniman.
समागमश्च पाण्डूनां यत्र वैश्रवणेन च। समागमश्चार्जुनस्य तत्रैव भ्रातृभिः सह
There is also the meeting of the Pandavas with Vaishravana, and Arjuna's reunion with his brothers there.
अवाप्य दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि गुर्वर्थं सव्यसाचिना। निवातकवचैर्युद्धं हिरण्यपुरवासिभिः
Having obtained divine weapons for the sake of his teacher, Savyasacin fought with the Nivatakavachas and the inhabitants of Hiranyapura.
निवातकवचैर्घोरैर्दानवैः सुरशत्रुभिः। पौलोमैः कालकेयैश्च यत्र युद्धं किरीटिनः
There, the diademed one fought with the fierce Nivatakavacha danavas, enemies of the gods, as well as with the Paulomas and Kalakeyas.
वधश्चैषां समाख्यातो राज्ञस्तेनैव धीमता। अस्त्रसंदर्शनारम्भो धर्मराजस्य सन्निधौ
Their destruction is narrated by that wise king, and the beginning of the display of weapons in the presence of Dharmaraja.
पार्थस्य प्रतिषेधश्छ नारदेन सुरर्षिणा। अवरोहणं पुनश्चैव पाण्डूनां गन्धमादनात्
The restraint of Partha by the divine sage Narada is told, as well as the Pandavas' descent again from Gandhamadana.
भीमस्य ग्रहणं चात्र पर्वताभोगवर्ष्मणा। भुजगेन्द्रेण बलिना तस्मिन्सुगहने वने
Here is described the capture of Bhima, whose body was like the curve of a mountain, by the powerful king of serpents in that dense forest.
अमोक्षयद्यत्र चैनं प्रश्नानुक्त्वा युधिष्ठिरः। काम्यकागमनं चैव पुनस्तेषां महात्मनाम्
And there, Yudhishthira released him only after asking questions; also, the coming of the great-souled ones to Kamyaka is narrated again.
तत्रस्थांश्च पुनर्द्रष्टुं पाण्डवान्परुषर्षभान्। वासुदेवस्यागमनमत्रैव परिकीर्तितम्
Here too is recounted the coming of Vasudeva to see again the mighty bulls of the Bharata race, the Pandavas, who were staying there.
मार्कण्डेयसमास्यायामुपाख्यानानि सर्वशः। पृथोर्वैन्यस्य यत्रोक्तमाख्यानं परमर्षिणा
All the stories spoken by Markandeya are narrated here, including the tale of Prithu, son of Vena, as told by the supreme sage.
संवादश्च सरस्वत्यास्तार्क्ष्यर्षेः सुमहात्मनः। मत्स्योपाख्यानमत्रैव प्रोच्यते तदनन्तरम्
Also, the dialogue between Sarasvati and the great-souled sage Tarkhya is told here, and immediately after, the story of the fish is recounted.
मार्कण्डेयसमास्या च पुराणं परिकीर्त्यते। ऐन्द्रद्युम्नामुपाख्यानं तथैवाङ्गिरसं स्मृतम्
The Purana recited by Markandeya is also described here, as well as the tale of Indradyumna and the story of Angirasa as remembered.
पतिव्रतायाश्चाख्यानं तथैवाङ्गिरसं स्मृतम्। द्रौपद्याः कीर्तितश्चात्र संवादः सत्यभामया
The story of the devoted wife is also remembered as that of Angirasa, and here too is recounted the conversation between Draupadi and Satyabhama.
पुनर्द्वैतवनं चैव पाण्डवाः समुपागताः। घोषयात्रा च गन्धर्वैर्यत्र बद्धः सुयोधनः
Again, the Pandavas came to the Dvaita forest, and there the cattle expedition is described, where Suyodhana was captured by the Gandharvas.
ह्रियमाणस्तु मन्दात्मा मोक्षितोऽसौ किरीटिना। धर्मराजस्य चात्रैव मृगस्वप्ननिदर्शनात्
But that foolish one, being carried away, was released by Arjuna; and here too is the account of the vision of the deer in the dream of Dharmaraja.
काम्यके काननश्रेष्ठे पुनर्गमनमुच्यते। व्रीहिद्रौणिकमाख्यानमत्रैव बहुविस्तरम्
The return to the excellent Kamyaka forest is told here, and the story of Vrihidraunika is narrated in great detail.
दुर्वाससोऽप्युपाख्यानमत्रैव परिकीर्तितम्। जयद्रथेनापहारो द्रौपद्याश्चाश्रमान्तरात्
Here too is recounted the story of Durvasa, and the abduction of Draupadi by Jayadratha from within the hermitage.
यत्रैनमन्वयाद्भीमो वायुवेगसमो जवे। चक्रे चैनं पञ्चशिखं यत्र भीमो महाबलः
There Bhima, swift as the wind, pursued him, and the mighty Bhima made him five-tufted.
रामायणमुपाख्यानमत्रैव बहुविस्तरम्। यत्र रामेण विक्रम्य निहतो रावणो युधि
Here too is the extensive tale of the Ramayana, where Rama, having displayed his valor, slew Ravana in battle.
सावित्र्याश्चाप्युपाख्यानमत्रैव परिकीर्तितम्। कर्णस्य परिमोक्षोऽत्र कुण्डलाभ्यां पुरंदरात्
Here also is narrated the story of Savitri, and the release of Karna's earrings by Indra.
यत्रास्य शक्तिं तुष्टोऽसावदादेकवधाय च। आरणेयमुपाख्यानं यत्र धर्मोऽन्वशात्सुतम्
There, being pleased, he gave him the spear for the purpose of a single killing; and the story of Arani is told, where Dharma pursued his son.
जग्मुर्लब्धवरा यत्र पाण्डवाः पश्चिमां दिशम्। एतदारण्यकं पर्व तृतीयं परिकीर्तितम्
There, having obtained boons, the Pandavas went to the western direction; this is declared to be the third book, the Aranyaka Parva.
अत्राध्यायशते द्वे तु संख्यया परिकीर्तिते। एकोनसप्ततिश्चैव तथाऽध्यायाः प्रकीर्तिताः
Here, two hundred chapters are enumerated, and also sixty-nine chapters are mentioned.

Now, listen in detail to the Virata Parva: how, after reaching the city of Virata, the Pandavas hid their great weapons in a large shami tree at the cremation ground.
दृष्ट्वा संनिदधुस्तत्र पाण्डवा ह्यायुधान्युत। यत्र प्रविश्य नगरं छद्मना न्यवसंस्तु ते
There, having seen the place, the Pandavas concealed their weapons; then, entering the city in disguise, they dwelled there.
पाञ्चालीं प्रार्थयानस्य कामोपहतचेतसः। दुष्टात्मनो वधो यत्र कीचकस्य वृकोदरात्
There, Kichaka, whose mind was overcome by desire, sought Draupadi; and it was there that the wicked Kichaka was slain by Bhima.
पाण्डवान्वेषणार्थं च राज्ञो दुर्योधनस्य च। चाराः प्रस्थापिताश्चात्र निपुणाः सर्वतोदिशं
Also, for the purpose of searching for the Pandavas, King Duryodhana sent out skilled spies in all directions.
न च प्रवृत्तिस्तैर्लब्धा पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम्। गोग्रहश्च विराटस्य त्रिगर्तैः प्रथमं कृतः
But those spies could not discover any information about the great-souled Pandavas; and the first cattle raid against Virata was carried out by the Trigartas.
यत्रास्य युद्धं सुमहत्तैरासील्लोमहर्षणम्। ह्रियमाणश्च यत्रासौ भीमसेनेन मोक्षितः
There, a great and hair-raising battle took place; and as the cattle were being driven away, Bhimasena rescued them.
