तत इष्टेऽहनि प्राप्ते मुहूर्ते साधुसंमते। `विवाहं कारायामास भीष्मः पाण्डोर्महात्मनः।' जग्राह विधिवत्पाणिं माद्र्याः पाण्डुर्नराधिपः
When the auspicious day arrived, Bhishma arranged the wedding for the great Pandu. The king Pandu took Madri's hand according to the proper rites.
ततो विवाहे निर्वृत्ते स राजा कुरुनन्दनः। स्थापयामास तां भार्यां शुभे वेश्मनि भामिनीं
After the wedding was completed, the Kuru king established his radiant wife in a beautiful residence.
स ताभ्यां व्यचरत्सार्धं भार्याभ्यां राजसत्तमः। कुन्त्या माद्र्या च राजेन्द्रो यथाकामं यथासुखम्
The noble king lived happily with his two wives, Kunti and Madri, as he wished and as pleased him.
ततः स कौरवो राजा विहृत्य त्रिदशा निशाः। जिगीषया महीं पाण्डुर्निरक्रामत्पुरात्प्रभो
Then, after spending three nights, the Kuru king Pandu, desiring to conquer the earth, departed from the city, O lord.
स भीष्मप्रमुखान्वृद्धानभिवाद्य प्रणम्य च। धृतराष्ट्रं च कौरव्यं तथान्यान्कुरुसत्तमान्। आमन्त्र्य प्रययौ राजा तैश्चैवाप्यनुमोजितः
He honored and bowed to the elders led by Bhishma, to Dhritarashtra and other distinguished Kurus, took leave, and departed, with their approval.
मङ्गलाचारयुक्ताभिराशीर्भिरभिनन्दितः। गजवाजिरथौघेन बलेन महताऽगमत्
Blessed with auspicious rites and congratulated with good wishes, he set out with a great force of elephants, horses, and chariots.
स राजा देवगर्भाभो विजिगीषुर्वसुन्धराम्। हृष्टपुष्टबलैः प्रायात्पाण्डुः शत्रूननेकशः
That king, resembling a child of the gods, Pandu, eager to conquer the earth, marched forth with joyful and strong troops against many enemies.
पूर्वमागस्कृतो गत्वा दशार्णाः समरे जिताः। पाण्डुना नरसिंहेन कौरवाणां यशोभृता
First, having gone to the Dasharna country, the lion-like Pandu, the glory of the Kurus, defeated them in battle.
ततः सेनामुपादाय पाण्डुर्नानाविधध्वजाम्। प्रभूतहस्त्यश्वयुतां पदातिरथसंकुलाम्
Then Pandu, assembling his army adorned with various banners, abundant with elephants and horses, crowded with infantry and chariots,
आगस्कारी महीपानां बहूनां बलदर्पितः। गोप्ता मगधराष्ट्रस्य दीर्घो राजगृहे हतः
He, bold among many kings and proud of his strength, the protector of the Magadha realm, was slain in the long city of Rajagriha.
ततः कोशं समादाय वाहनानि च भूरिशः। पाण्डुना मिथिलां गत्वा विदेहाः समरे जिताः
Then, taking the treasury and numerous vehicles, Pandu went to Mithila and conquered the Videhas in battle.
तथा काशिषु सुह्मेषु पुण्ड्रेषु च नरर्षभ। स्वबाहुबलवीर्येण कुरूणामकरोद्यशः
Likewise, in Kashi, Suhma, and Pundra, O bull among men, by the power and might of his own arms, he brought glory to the Kurus.
तं शरौघमहाज्वालं शस्त्रार्चिषमरिन्दमम्। पाण्डुपावकमासाद्य व्यवह्यन्त नराधिपाः
The kings, encountering Pandu blazing like a mass of arrows and weapons, a foe of enemies, withdrew from him.
ते ससेनाः ससेनेन विध्वंसितबला नृपाः। पाण्डुना वशगाः कृत्वा कुरुकर्मसु योजिताः
Those kings, their armies shattered by Pandu, were brought under his control and employed in the tasks of the Kurus.
तेन ते निर्जिताः सर्वे पृथिव्यां सर्वपार्थिवाः। तमेकं मेनिरे शूरं देवेष्विव पुरन्दरम्
By him, all the rulers of the earth were subdued; they regarded him as the sole hero, like Indra among the gods.
तं कृताञ्जलयः सर्वे प्रणता वसुधाधिपाः। उपाजग्मुर्धनं गृह्य रत्नानि विविधानि च
All the lords of the earth, with joined palms, bowed to him, approaching with their heads lowered and bringing various jewels.
मणिमुक्ताप्रवालं च सुवर्णं रजतं बहु। गोरत्नान्यश्वरत्नानि रथरत्नानि कुञ्जरान्
They brought gems, pearls, coral, much gold and silver, treasures of cows and horses, chariots, and elephants.
खरोष्ट्रमहिषांश्चैव यच्च किंचिदजाविकम्। कम्लाजिनरत्नानि राङ्कवास्तरणानि च। तत्सर्वं प्रतिजग्राह राजा नागपुराधिपः
They also brought camels, buffaloes, and whatever other livestock, lotus-skin treasures, blankets from Ranka, and all these were accepted by the king, lord of Nagapura.
तदादाय ययौ पाण्डुः पुनर्मदितवाहनः। हर्षयिष्यन्स्वराष्ट्राणि पुरं च गजसाह्वयम्
Taking all this, Pandu departed again with his splendid vehicles, wishing to gladden his own realms and the city called Gajasahvaya.
शान्तनो राजसिंहस्य भरतस्य च धीमतः। प्रनष्टः कीर्तिजः शब्दः पाण्डुना पुनराहृतः
The fame lost of Shantanu, the lion among kings, and wise Bharata, was restored by Pandu.
ये पुरा कुरुराष्ट्राणि जह्रुः कुरुधनानि च। ते नागपुरसिंहेन पाण्डुना करदीकृताः
Those who had formerly seized the Kuru realms and their wealth were made tributary by Pandu, the lion of Nagapura.
इत्यभाषन्त राजानो राजामात्याश्च सङ्गताः। प्रतीतमनसो हृष्टाः पौरजानपदैः सह
Thus spoke the assembled kings and ministers, their minds confident and joyful, together with the citizens and countryfolk.
प्रत्युद्ययुश्च तं प्राप्तं सर्वे भीष्मपुरोगमाः। ते नदूरमिवाध्वानं गत्वा नागपुरालयाः
All, led by Bhishma, went out to meet him as he arrived, and the residents of Nagapura, having traveled a long distance, welcomed him.
आवृतं ददृशुर्हृष्टा लोकं बहुविधैर्धनैः। नानायानसमानीतै रत्नैरुच्चावचैस्तदा
They saw the land, filled with various riches, brought by many vehicles, and jewels of every kind, high and low.
हस्त्यश्वरथरत्नैश्च गोभिरुष्ट्रैस्तथाऽऽविभिः। नान्तं ददृशुरासाद्य भीष्मेण सह कौरवाः
With treasures of elephants, horses, chariots, cows, camels, and sheep, the Kauravas, together with Bhishma, found no end to the wealth.
सोऽभिवाद्य पितुः पादौ कौसल्यानन्दवर्धनः। यथाऽर्हं मानयामास पौरजानपदानपि
He, increasing the joy of Kausalya, bowed to his father's feet, and honored the citizens and countryfolk as was proper.
प्रमृद्य परराष्ट्राणि कृतार्थं पुनरागतम्। पुत्रमाश्लिष्य भीष्मस्तु हर्षादश्रूण्यवर्तयत्
Having subdued enemy kingdoms and accomplished his purpose, Bhishma returned; embracing his son, he shed tears of joy.
स तूर्यशतशङ्खानां भेरीणां च महास्वनैः। हर्षयन्सर्वशः पौरान्विवेश गजसाह्वयम्
With the mighty sounds of hundreds of trumpets, conches, and drums, delighting all the citizens, he entered Hastinapura.
धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञातः स्वबाहुविजितं धनम्। भीष्माय सत्यवत्यै च मात्रे चोपजहार सः
Permitted by Dhritarashtra, Pandu brought the wealth he had won by his own strength and offered it to Bhishma, Satyavati, and his mother.
विदुराय च वै पाण्डुः प्रेषयामास तद्धनम्। सुहृदश्चापि धर्मात्मा धनेन समतर्पयत्
Pandu also sent that wealth to Vidura, and the righteous one satisfied his friends with riches as well.
