Having heard it, act accordingly with the wise priests, skilled in the laws of emergencies and wealth, and considering the ways of the world.
Because Jamadagni's son Rama could not endure his father's murder, the king of the Haihayas was formerly slain by his axe.
Hundreds of Arjuna's arms were severed, and by that act, a most difficult duty was performed for the world.
Again, taking up his bow and releasing mighty weapons, he repeatedly burned the Kshatriyas, conquering the earth with his chariot.
Thus, with weapons of various kinds, the great-souled Bhargava made the earth devoid of Kshatriyas twenty-one times in ancient days.
When the world had thus been made devoid of Kshatriyas by that great sage, then, from all sides, Kshatriya women gathered together.
Children were then begotten by Brahmanas learned in the Vedas, and it is established in the scriptures that these were sons born of lawful marriage.
Having established righteousness in their minds, those Brahmanas approached the women; thus, the rebirth of Kshatriyas in the world is known to have occurred.
Then, once again, the Kshatriya order arose; and here I shall recount to you this ancient tale.
There was once a wise sage named Uchathya; his wife, greatly esteemed, was called Mamatā.
Bṛhaspati, of great brilliance, younger brother of Uchathya and priest of the gods, desired Mamatā.
Mamatā spoke to him, her illustrious brother-in-law: 'I am pregnant, and have been united with your elder brother.'
O Bṛhaspati, this noble child of Uchathya is already in my womb; even now, he is learning the six limbs of the Veda here, O godly one.
Your seed is unfailing, and for two there can be no conception; therefore, in this situation, you ought to desist today.
Thus addressed, Bṛhaspati, noble in intellect, could not restrain his desire, though he was urged to do so.
Then, overcome by passion, he was united with her against her will; but as he released his seed, the child in the womb spoke.
'O revered one, do not act out of desire; for two, there can be no conception here. The space is small, O blessed one, and I have come here first.'
Your seed is unfailing, and you should not cause harm; yet Bṛhaspati, without heeding the words of the child in the womb,
proceeded to unite with Mamatā of lovely eyes; and knowing the emission of seed, the sage within her womb,
blocked the path of Bṛhaspati's seed with his feet; thus, the seed, unable to find its place, was checked.
That seed suddenly fell to the ground; then, Bṛhaspati, enraged at seeing his seed fallen, cursed him in his wrath.
The divine sage rebuked the child of Uchathya in the womb: 'Though all beings desire me at such a time, you have opposed me.'
Because you spoke thus, you shall enter into long darkness; and from that curse, the sage was born with the name Dīrghatamas.
Dīrghatamas, though blind from birth, was learned in the Vedas and wise, possessing the glory of Bṛhaspati; by his knowledge, he obtained a wife.
He married a young and beautiful Brahmin woman named Pradveṣī; the illustrious sage begot sons such as Gautama.
Thus, for the increase of Uchathya's lineage, the righteous and great-souled sage, master of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, was born.
Having thoroughly learned the duties of cattle and those taught by Saurabheya, the sage, full of faith and without doubt, then began to practice them.
Then, seeing him transgressing proper conduct, the eminent sages residing in that hermitage, overcome by anger and delusion, all became enraged.
"Behold, this one has broken the code of conduct; he does not deserve to dwell in the hermitage. Therefore, let us all abandon this sinful one."
Thus, speaking among themselves about the long-darkened sage, and because she had obtained a son, his wife was not satisfied with her husband at that time.
