ततो रोषपरीताङ्गः प्रमुमोच स राक्षसः। शरवर्षं महाघोरं घटोत्कचरथं प्रति
Then, his body overcome with rage, that Rakshasa released a most terrible shower of arrows at Ghatotkacha's chariot.
तयोः प्रतिभयं युद्धमासीद्राक्षससिंहयोः। कुर्वतोर्विविधा मायाः शक्रशम्बरयोरिव
A fearful battle took place between those two lion-like Rakshasas, both employing various illusions, like that of Shakra and Shambara.
अलम्बुसो भृशं क्रुद्धो घटोत्कचमताडयत्
Alambusa, greatly enraged, struck Ghatotkacha.
तयोर्युद्धं समभवद्रक्षोग्रामणिमुख्ययोः। यादृगेव पुरा वृत्तं रामरावणयोः प्रभो
The battle between those chiefs of the Rakshasa hosts was like that which once occurred between Rama and Ravana, O lord.
घटोत्कचस्तु विंशत्या नाराचानां स्तनान्तरे। अलम्बुसमथो विद्धा सिंहवद्व्यनदन्मुहुः
Ghaṭotkaca, pierced Alambusa in the chest with twenty arrows, and roared repeatedly like a lion.
तथैवालम्बुसो राजन्हैडिम्बिं युद्धदुर्मदम्। विद्व्वा विद्वृऽनदद्वृष्टः पूरयन्खं समन्ततः
Likewise, O King, Alambusa, fierce in battle, struck Haiḍimbi, and roared loudly, filling the field from all sides.
तथा तौ भृशसङ्क्रुद्धौ राक्षसेन्द्रौ महाबलौ। निर्विशेषमयुध्येतां मायाभिरितरेतरम्
Thus, those two mighty kings of the rākṣasas, greatly enraged, fought each other with illusions, without distinction.
मायाशतसृजौ नित्यं मोहयन्तौ परस्परम्। मायायुद्धेषु कुशलौ मायायुद्धमयुध्यताम्
Constantly creating hundreds of illusions, bewildering each other, skilled in magical warfare, they fought with illusions.
यांयां घटोत्कचो युद्धे मायां दर्शयते नृप। तां तामलम्बुसो राजन्माययैव निजघ्निवान्
Whatever illusion Ghaṭotkaca displayed in battle, O King, Alambusa countered it with his own illusion and destroyed it.
तं तथा युध्यमानं तु मायायुद्धविशारदम्। अलम्बुसं राक्षसेन्द्रं दृष्ट्वाऽक्रुध्यन्त पाण्डवाः
Seeing Alambusa, the king of rākṣasas, fighting so expertly in magical warfare, the Pāṇḍavas became enraged.
त एनं भृशसंविग्नाः सर्वतः प्रवरा रथैः। अभ्यद्रवन्त सङ्कुद्धा भीमसेनादयो नृप
Disturbed and angry, Bhīmasena and the others, the foremost warriors, rushed at him from all sides with their chariots.
त एनं कोष्ठकीकृत्य रथवंशेन मारिष। सर्वतो व्यकिरन्बाणैरुल्काभिरिव कुञ्जरम्
Surrounding him with their chariot ranks, O Mārīṣa, they showered him from all sides with arrows, like meteors striking an elephant.
स तेषामस्त्रवेगं तं प्रतिहत्यास्त्रमायया। तस्माद्रथव्रजान्मुक्तो वनदाहादिव द्विपः
Repelling the force of their weapons with his own magical weapons, he escaped from the ranks of chariots like an elephant fleeing a forest fire.
स विष्फार्य अनुर्धोरमिन्द्राशनिसमस्वनम्। मारुतिं पञ्चविंशत्या भैमसेनिं च पञ्चभिः
He drew his bow, which resounded like Indra's thunderbolt, and struck Māruti with twenty-five arrows, and Bhaimaseni with five.
युधिष्ठिरं त्रिभिर्विद्धा सहदेवं च सप्तभिः। नकुलं च त्रिसप्तत्या द्रोपदेयांश्च मारिष। पञ्चभिःपञ्चभिर्विद्ध्वा घोरं नादं ननाद ह
He pierced Yudhiṣṭhira with three arrows, Sahadeva with seven, Nakula with seventy-three, and the sons of Draupadī, O Mārīṣa, with five arrows each, then uttered a terrible roar.
तं भीमसेनो नवभिः सहदेवस्तु पञ्चभिः। युधिष्ठिरः शतेनैव राक्षसं प्रत्यविध्यत। नकुलस्तु चतुःषष्ट्या द्रौपदेयास्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिः
Bhīmasena struck him with nine arrows, Sahadeva with five, Yudhiṣṭhira with a hundred, Nakula with sixty-four, and the sons of Draupadī with three arrows each.
हैडिम्बो राक्षसं विद्ध्वा युद्धे पञ्चाशता शरैः। पुनर्विव्याध सप्तत्या ननाद च महाबलः
Haiḍimba pierced the rākṣasa in battle with fifty arrows, then struck him again with seventy, and the mighty one roared.
तस्य नादेन महता कम्पितेयं वसुन्धरा। सपर्वतवना राजन्सपादपजलाशया
At his great roar, O King, the earth trembled, along with its mountains, forests, trees, and waters.
सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासैः सर्वतस्तैर्महारथैः। प्रतिविव्याध तान्सर्वान्पञ्चभिः पञ्चभिः शरैः
Pierced from all sides by those great archers, he, the king of rākṣasas, struck them all in return with five arrows each.
तं क्रुद्धं राक्षसं युद्धे प्रतिक्रुद्धस्तु राक्षसः। हैडिम्बो भरतश्रेष्ठ शरैर्विव्याध सप्तभिः
Haiḍimba, enraged in battle, struck the angry rākṣasa with seven arrows, O best of Bharatas.
सोऽतिविद्धो बलवता राक्षसेन्द्रो महाबलः। व्यसृजत्सायकांस्तूर्णं रुक्मपुङ्खाञ्शिलाशितान्
Pierced by the powerful Haiḍimba, the mighty king of rākṣasas swiftly released arrows with golden shafts and stone tips.
ते शऱा नतपर्वाणो भैमसेनिविनिर्भिदः। रुषिताः पन्नगा यद्वद्योधमुख्यानुपागमन्
Those arrows, curved and sharp, released by Bhaimaseni, rushed at the foremost warriors like enraged serpents.
ततस्ते पाण्डवा राजन्समन्तान्निशिताञ्शरान्। प्रेषयामासुरुद्विग्ना हैडिम्बश्च घटोत्कचः
Then, O King, the Pandavas, together with Hidimba's son Ghatotkaca, anxiously released sharp arrows in all directions.
स विध्यमानः समरे पाण्डवैर्जितकाशिभिः। `*नाभ्यपद्यत कर्तव्यमार्श्यशृङ्गिर्महाबलः
Assailed in battle by the Pandavas and the conquerors of Kashi, the mighty Arshya-shringa did not approach what should be done.
घटोत्कचं महाराज शरवर्षैरवाकिरत्। दग्धाद्रिकूटसदृशं तमञ्जनचयोपरमम्
O King, Ghatotkaca was showered with a rain of arrows, resembling a mountain peak set ablaze, or the darkness of a mass of collyrium.
घटोत्कचोऽप्यसम्भ्रान्तः शरवर्षं महत्तरम्। अलम्बुसवधप्रेप्सुर्मुमोचाग्निरिव ज्वलन्
But Ghatotkaca, undisturbed, desiring to slay Alambusa, released an even greater shower of arrows, like blazing fire.
अलम्बुसवधाच्चोग्राद्धटोत्कचवधादपि। शराः प्रादुर्भवन्ति स्म द्विरेफा इव शाखिनः
From the fierce desire to kill Alambusa, and from the desire to kill Ghatotkaca, arrows appeared as if swarms of bees on trees.
अभ्रच्छायेव रचिता बाणैस्तत्र नरेश्वर। न स्म विज्ञायते किञ्चिदन्धकारे कृते शरैः
There, O lord of men, a darkness was produced by the arrows, as if fashioned from the shade of clouds, so that nothing at all could be discerned.
तत आकर्णमुक्तेन भल्लेन च घटोत्कचः। अलम्बुसस्य चिच्छेद शिरो यन्तुर्महाबलः
Then Ghatotkaca, with a broad-headed arrow drawn to his ear, severed the head of the mighty Alambusa, the charioteer.
ततोऽपरैर्वेगवद्भिः क्षुरैस्तस्य घटोत्कचः। अक्षमीषां युगं चैव चिच्छेद युधि ताडयन्
Then Ghatotkaca, with other swiftly flying razors, struck and cut off the yoke of his horses in battle.
