Having slain him, mighty-armed Sahadeva shone forth, as Rama, son of Dasaratha, did after slaying the powerful Khara.
A great cry of lament arose among the Trigartas, O lord of men, when they saw the royal prince Niramitra, the great chariot-warrior, slain.
Nakul, your son, O king, swiftly defeated Vikarna, wide-eyed, and it seemed a marvel to all the world.
Vyaghradata, with arrows whose heads were bent, rendered Satyaki, along with his horses, charioteer, and banner, invisible amid the troops.
But the valiant Satyaki, skilled in arms, warded off those arrows and, with his own shafts, brought down Vyaghradata together with his horses, charioteer, and banner.
When that prince, son of the Magadha king, was slain, all the Magadhas gathered from every side and rushed at Yuyudhana.
Hurling thousands of arrows, spears, clubs, javelins, maces, and pestles, those valiant warriors fiercely attacked Satyaki, mad for battle.
But Satyaki, powerful and unshaken in battle, overcame all those warriors without great difficulty, O best of men.
O mighty one, when the Magadha and Andhraka troops saw those around them slain and only a remnant left, your army broke apart, struck down everywhere by Yuyudhana’s arrows.
Having destroyed your army on all sides in battle, the illustrious one shone forth, wielding his excellent bow.
O King, as your army was being shattered by the great-hearted Sātvata, none dared turn back to fight, terrified by the long-armed warrior.
Then Droṇa, greatly enraged, suddenly widened his eyes and rushed himself at Sātyaki, the true-acting one.
Regaining consciousness, Māruti, overcome with wrath, drew his formidable, supreme bow and assailed Alambusa from all sides with sharp arrows.
Pierced by many arrows and appearing like a heap of dark collyrium, he shone all around, O King, like a blossoming kimshuka tree.
Assailed in battle by arrows shot from Bhīma’s bow, remembering his brother’s slaying by the great-souled Pāṇḍava, he assumed a terrible form and spoke to Bhīmasena.
Stay now in battle, Pārtha, and witness my valor today! O wicked-minded one, I am Baka, the mighty foremost of rākṣasas.
That deed of yours, by which my brother was slain by you, was done out of my sight.
Having spoken thus, he vanished from Bhīma’s sight, then showered him fiercely with a great downpour of arrows.
O King, when the rākṣasa became invisible in battle, Bhīma filled the sky with arrows whose shafts were bent and sharp.
Assailed by Bhīma, in a moment the vile one mounted his chariot, then swiftly moved to the earth and suddenly ascended to the sky.
He assumed many and various forms, now minute, now huge, then again massive, roaring like a cloud.
From the sky there fell thousands of streams of arrows, spears, darts, javelins, lances, and tomars.
Hundred-slayers, iron clubs, maces, axes, stones, swords, cudgels, spears, and even vajras fell as well.
That dreadful rain of weapons, unleashed by the rākṣasa, struck down the soldiers of the son of Pāṇḍu on the battlefield.
He uttered many and various cries all around, and by him, the elephants of the Pāṇḍava army were slain in battle.
Many horses, O King, and again foot soldiers, and chariot-warriors were struck down by his arrows and fell from their chariots.
He set in motion a river with eddies of blood, crowded with elephant-crocodiles, where umbrellas floated like swans, muddy, and teeming with serpent-like arms.
He unleashed a river, filled with hosts of demons, which carried away the Cedis, Panchalas, and Srinjayas in many ways, O King.
Seeing him thus moving fearlessly in battle, the Pandavas were greatly agitated, beholding his prowess.
But among your troops, a great joy arose, and a fierce, tremendous sound of instruments, causing hair to stand on end.
