विद्व्वा तं च रणे द्रोणं पञ्चभिर्नतपर्वभिः। क्षुरप्रेण सुतीक्ष्णेन चिच्छेदास्य महद्धनुः
The learned Yudhishthira then struck Drona in battle with five razor-sharp, well-feathered arrows, cutting his great bow.
तदपास्य धनुश्छिन्नं द्रोणः क्षत्रियमर्दनः। गदां चिक्षेप सहसा धर्मपुत्राय मारिष
Casting aside his severed bow, Drona, subduer of warriors, suddenly hurled a mace at the son of Dharma, O Marisha.
तामापतन्तीं सहसा गदां दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरः। गदामेवाग्रहीत्क्रुद्धश्चिक्षेप च परन्तप
Seeing that mace rushing upon him, Yudhishthira, enraged, seized his own mace and hurled it, scorcher of foes.
ते गदे सहसा मुक्ते समासाद्य परस्परम्। सङ्घर्षात्पावकं मुक्त्वा समेयातां महीतले
Those two maces, released at once, collided with each other, and from their clash, fire burst forth as they fell to the earth.
ततो द्रोणो भृशं क्रुद्धो धर्मराजस्य मारिष। चतुर्भिर्निशितैस्तीक्ष्णैर्हयाञ्जघ्ने शरोत्तमैः
Then Drona, greatly enraged, struck the horses of Dharmaraja with four sharp, excellent arrows, O Marisha.
चिच्छेदैकेन भल्लेन धनुश्चेन्द्रध्वजोपमम्। केतुमेकेन चिच्छेद पाण्डवं चार्दयत्त्रिभिः
With one broad-headed arrow he cut Yudhishthira's bow, resplendent as Indra's banner, with another he cut his standard, and with three he wounded the Pandava.
हताश्वात्तुल रथात्तूर्णमवप्लुत्य युधिष्ठिरः। तस्थावूर्ध्वभुजो राजा व्यायुधो भरतर्षभ
With his horses slain and his chariot shattered, Yudhishthira swiftly leapt down and stood, arms raised, weaponless, O bull of Bharata's race.
विरथं तं समालोक्य व्यायुधं च विशेषतः। द्रोणो व्यमोहयच्छत्रून्सर्वसैन्यानि चाभिभो
Seeing him chariotless and especially unarmed, Drona bewildered his enemies and all the armies, O ruler of men.
मुञ्चंश्चेषुगणांस्तीक्ष्णाँल्लघुहस्तो दृढव्रतः। अभिदुद्राव राजानं सिंहो मृगमिवोल्बणः
With swift hands and firm resolve, releasing volleys of sharp arrows, Drona rushed at the king like a lion upon a helpless deer.
तमभिद्रुतमालोक्य द्रोणेनामित्रघातिना। हाहेति सुमहाञ्शब्दः पाण्डूनां समजायत
Seeing Drona, slayer of foes, charging at him, a great cry of 'Alas!' arose among the Pandavas.
हृतो राजा हृतो राजा भारद्वाजेन मारिष। इत्यांसीत्सुमहाञ्शब्दः पाण्डूसैन्यस्य सर्वतः
The king has been seized! The king has been seized by Bharadvaja's son!—Such a great cry arose from all sides of the Pandava army.
ततस्त्वरितमारुह्य सहदेवरथं नृपः। अपायाज्जवनैरश्वैः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः
Then, mounting Sahadeva's chariot in haste, King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, departed swiftly with his fleet horses.
माद्रेयस्तु ततः क्रुद्धो दुर्मुखं च शितैः शरैः। भ्राता भ्रातरमायत्तो विव्याध प्रहसन्निव
Then Madri's son, enraged, struck Durmukha with sharp arrows—one brother attacking another, as if laughing.
तं रणे रभसं दृष्ट्वा सहदेवं महाबलम्। दुर्मुखो नवभिर्बाणैस्ताडयामास भारत
Seeing mighty Sahadeva so impetuous in battle, Durmukha, O Bharata, struck him with nine arrows.
दुर्मुखस्य तु भल्लेन च्छित्त्वा केतुं महाबलः। जघान चतुरो वाहांश्चतुर्भिर्निशितैः शरैः
But Sahadeva, of great strength, cut down Durmukha's banner with a broad-headed arrow, and with four keen shafts struck his four horses.
अथापरेण भल्लेन पीतेन निशितेन ह। चिच्छेद सारथेः कायाच्छिरो ज्वलितकुण्डलम्
Then, with another sharp, golden-feathered arrow, he severed the head of the charioteer, whose earrings blazed, from his body.
क्षुरप्रेण च तीक्ष्णेन कौरव्यस्य महद्धनुः। सहदेवो रणे छित्त्वा तं च विव्याध पञ्चभिः
And with a razor-edged arrow, Sahadeva cut down the great bow of the Kaurava in battle, and pierced him with five more.
हताश्वं तु रथं त्यक्त्वा दुर्मुखो विमनास्तदा। आरुरोह रथं राजन्निरमित्रस्य भारत
Abandoning his chariot, whose horses were slain, Durmukha, disheartened, mounted the chariot of Niramitra, O Bharata.
सहदेवस्ततः क्रुद्धो निरमित्रं महाहवे। जघान पृथुधारेण भल्लेन परवीरहा
Then Sahadeva, enraged, struck Niramitra, the destroyer of enemy heroes, with a broad-headed arrow in that great battle.
स पपात रथोपस्थान्निरमित्रो जनेश्वरः। त्रिगर्तराजस्य सुतो व्यथयंस्तव वाहिनीम्
Niramitra, son of the king of the Trigartas, fell from his chariot, O lord of men, causing distress among your troops.
तं तु हत्वा महाबाहुः सहदेवो व्यरोचत। यथा दाशरथी रामः खरं हत्वा महाबलम्
Having slain him, mighty-armed Sahadeva shone forth, as Rama, son of Dasaratha, did after slaying the powerful Khara.
हाहाकारो महानासीत्त्रिगर्तानां जनेश्वर। राजपुत्रं हतं दृष्ट्वा निरमित्रं महारथम्
A great cry of lament arose among the Trigartas, O lord of men, when they saw the royal prince Niramitra, the great chariot-warrior, slain.
नकुलस्ते सुतं राजन्विकर्णं पृथुलोचनम्। मुहूर्ताज्जितवाँल्लोके तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Nakul, your son, O king, swiftly defeated Vikarna, wide-eyed, and it seemed a marvel to all the world.
सात्यकिं व्याघ्रदत्तस्तु शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः। चक्रेऽदृश्यं साश्वसूतं सध्वजं पृतनान्तरे
Vyaghradata, with arrows whose heads were bent, rendered Satyaki, along with his horses, charioteer, and banner, invisible amid the troops.
तान्निवार्य शराञ्शूरः शैनेयः कृतहस्तवत्। साश्वसूतध्वजं बाणैर्व्याघ्रदत्तमपातयत्
But the valiant Satyaki, skilled in arms, warded off those arrows and, with his own shafts, brought down Vyaghradata together with his horses, charioteer, and banner.
कुमारे निहते तस्मिन्मागधस्य सुते प्रभो। मागधाः सर्वतो यत्ता युयुधानमुपाद्रवन्
When that prince, son of the Magadha king, was slain, all the Magadhas gathered from every side and rushed at Yuyudhana.
विसृजन्तः शरांश्चैव तोमरांश्च सहस्रशः। मिण्डिपालांस्तथा प्रासान्मुद्रान्मुसलानपि।। अयोधयन्रणे शूराः सात्वतं युद्धदुर्मदम्
Hurling thousands of arrows, spears, clubs, javelins, maces, and pestles, those valiant warriors fiercely attacked Satyaki, mad for battle.
तांस्तु सर्वान्स बलवान्सात्यकिर्युद्धदुर्मदः। नातिकृच्छ्राद्धसन्नेव विजिग्ये पुरुषर्षभः
But Satyaki, powerful and unshaken in battle, overcame all those warriors without great difficulty, O best of men.
मागधान्द्रवतो दृष्ट्वा हतशेषान्समन्ततः। बलं तेऽभज्यत विभो युयुधानशरार्दितम्
O mighty one, when the Magadha and Andhraka troops saw those around them slain and only a remnant left, your army broke apart, struck down everywhere by Yuyudhana’s arrows.
नाशयित्वा रणे सैन्यं त्वदीयं तु समन्ततः। विधुन्वानो धनुःश्रेष्ठं व्यभ्राजत महायशाः
Having destroyed your army on all sides in battle, the illustrious one shone forth, wielding his excellent bow.
