[For Kaunteya, skilled in effort, pierced the flesh between his fingers with arrows, and, tormented by pain, he turned to flight.]
Seeing that great archer in dire straits, wounded by Dhananjaya's arrows, his allies rushed to his aid.
With thousands of well-equipped chariots, elephants, horses, and eager infantry, they surrounded Dhananjaya.
Then neither Arjuna, nor Govinda, nor their chariot could be seen, concealed by a great shower of weapons and a torrent of arrows.
Then Arjuna, by the power of his weapons, struck down that array; there, hundreds of chariots and elephants were rendered disabled and fell.
Those who were slain and those being struck held back that excellent chariot; that chariot, obstructed, stood still within a shout's distance on all sides.
Then the heroic descendant of the Vrishni clan quickly spoke to Arjuna: 'While you string your bow with great force, I shall blow the conch.'
Thereupon Arjuna, powerfully stringing the Gandiva, struck down the enemies with a great shower of arrows and the sound of the bowstring.
Mighty Kesava blew the Panchajanya conch with a loud note; his face was covered in dust and sweat, his eyelashes disturbed by the wind.
By the wind filled from Achyuta's lips and released through the expanded hollow of the conch, with that sound, the whole world—gods, demons, guardians of the worlds—seemed shaken, O Lord, as if everything would burst apart.
At the sound of that conch and the twang of the bow, both the living and the lifeless among men fell to the ground at that time.
Freed by them, the chariot shone like a cloud driven by the wind; the protectors of Jayadratha, agitated, gathered with their followers.
Seeing Partha suddenly, the protectors of the Sindhu prince, those great archers, made loud noises, shaking the earth.
Those great souls produced fierce sounds of arrows, mingled with the blasts of conches, and also roars like lions.
Hearing that terrible uproar rising from your side, Vasudeva and Dhananjaya both blew their excellent conches.
With that great sound, the earth was filled—together with its mountains, oceans, islands, and netherworlds, O lord of men.
That sound, O best of the Bharatas, spreading through all ten directions, echoed right there in the armies of the Kurus and Pandavas.
There, seeing Krishna and Dhananjaya, your chariot-warriors were seized with utmost confusion, and the great warriors hurried about.
Then, seeing the two exalted Krishnas enraged, your men rushed forward in fury; it was a wondrous sight.
He struck Saumadatti with three sharp arrows, Shalya with ten blazing like tongues of fire, and Drona's son with eight.
He struck Kripa with twenty-five arrows, the Sindhu prince with a hundred, and again Drona's son with seventy arrows.
Then Bhurishravas, enraged, cut off Krishna's whip, and struck Arjuna with seventy-three arrows.
Then, White-horsed Arjuna, enraged, swiftly repelled those enemies with hundreds of sharp arrows, like a mighty wind driving away clouds.
Having cut down those arrows, the king, his eyes red with wrath, seized in battle a formidable spear, capable of splitting even mountains, with a golden shaft, terrifying, adorned with eight bells.
Lifting that spear with delight, the mighty warrior roared loudly, as if to terrify all creatures by his shout, O Bharata.
Seeing that spear raised in battle by the righteous king, all beings suddenly uttered blessings for Drona's safety.
Released from the king's arm, that spear, resembling a loosed serpent, blazed as it crossed the sky and all directions, reaching Drona like a serpent with flaming jaws.
Seeing that spear rushing upon him, Drona, best of those skilled in weapons, at once invoked the Brahma weapon, O lord of men.
That weapon, reducing the dreadful spear to ashes, swiftly reached the chariot of the illustrious Pandava.
Then King Yudhishthira, wise and discerning, quelled that weapon of Drona, which had been unleashed, with the Brahma weapon alone, O Marisha.
