तथा तु दृष्ट्वा योधास्ते प्रहृष्टौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ। हतो राजा हतो राजेत्यूचिरे च भयार्दिताः
Seeing Krishna and Pandava so elated, the warriors, struck with fear, cried out, 'The king is slain! The king is slain!'
जनस्य सन्निनादं तु श्रुत्वा दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत्। व्येतु वो भीरहं कृष्णौ प्रेषयिष्यामि मृत्यवे
Hearing the people's tumult, Duryodhana said, 'Let your fear subside; I will send Krishna and Arjuna to their death.'
इत्युक्त्वा सैनिकान्सर्वाञ्जयापेक्षी नराधिपः। पार्थमाभाष्य संरम्भादिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Having spoken thus to all the soldiers, the king, eager for victory, addressed Partha in anger with these words:
पार्थ यच्छिक्षितं तेऽस्त्रं दिव्यं पार्थिवमेव च। तद्दर्शय मयि क्षिप्रं यदि जातोऽसि पाण्डुना
Partha, whatever celestial and royal weapons you have learned, show them to me at once, if you are truly Pandu's son.
यद्बलं तव वीर्यं च केशवस्य तथैव च। तत्कुरुष्व मयि क्षिप्रं पश्यामस्तव पौरुषम्
Whatever strength and valor you possess, and likewise that of Keshava, display it against me at once, so we may see your prowess.
अस्मत्परोक्षं कर्माणि कृतानि प्रवदन्ति ते। स्वामिसत्कारयुक्तानि यानि तानीह दर्शय
Deeds performed by you in secret, spoken of as done for your master's honor—show all those here now.
ततः क्रुद्धो रणे पार्थः सृक्विणी परिसंलिहन्। नापश्यच्च ततोऽस्याङ्गं यन्न स्याद्वर्मरक्षितम्
Then, enraged in battle, Partha licked his lips, and did not spare any part of his opponent's body that was not protected by armor.
ततोऽस्य निशितैर्बाणैः सुमुक्तैरन्तकोपमैः। हयांश्चकार निर्देहानुभौ च पार्ष्णिसारथी
With sharp, well-aimed arrows, fierce as Death, he slew the horses and both the charioteer and the rear-guard.
धनुरस्याच्छिनत्तूर्णं हस्तावापं च वीर्यवान्। रथं च शकलीकर्तुं सव्यसाची प्रचक्रमे
The mighty-armed Savyasachi swiftly cut off his opponent's bow and the hand that held it, and began to shatter the chariot into pieces.
दुर्योधनं च बाणाभ्यां तीक्ष्णाभ्यां विरथीकृतम्। आविद्ध्यद्धस्ततलयोरुभयोरर्जुनस्तदा
Then Arjuna struck Duryodhana, rendered chariotless by two sharp arrows, wounding both his hands.
[प्रयत्नज्ञो हि कौन्तयो नखमांसान्तरेषुभिः। स वेदनाभिराविग्नः पलायनपरायणः।।]
[For Kaunteya, skilled in effort, pierced the flesh between his fingers with arrows, and, tormented by pain, he turned to flight.]
तं कृच्छ्रामापदं प्राप्तं दृष्ट्वा परमधन्विनः। समापेतुः परीप्सन्तो धनञ्जयशरार्दितम्
Seeing that great archer in dire straits, wounded by Dhananjaya's arrows, his allies rushed to his aid.
तं रथैर्बहुसाहस्रैः कल्पितैः कुञ्जरैर्हयैः। पदात्योघैश्च संरब्धैः परिवव्रुर्धनञ्जयम्
With thousands of well-equipped chariots, elephants, horses, and eager infantry, they surrounded Dhananjaya.
अथ नार्जुनगोविन्दौ न रथो वा व्यदृश्यत। अस्त्रवर्षेण महता शरौघैश्चापि संवृतौ
Then neither Arjuna, nor Govinda, nor their chariot could be seen, concealed by a great shower of weapons and a torrent of arrows.
ततोऽर्जुनोऽस्त्रवीर्येण निजघ्ने तां वरूथिनीम्। तत्र व्यङ्गी कृताः पेतुः शतशोऽथ रथद्विपाः
Then Arjuna, by the power of his weapons, struck down that array; there, hundreds of chariots and elephants were rendered disabled and fell.
ते हता हन्यमानाश्च न्यगृह्णंस्तं रथोत्तमम्। स रथः स्तम्भितस्तस्थौ क्रोशमात्रे समन्ततः
Those who were slain and those being struck held back that excellent chariot; that chariot, obstructed, stood still within a shout's distance on all sides.
ततोऽर्जुनं वृष्णिवीरस्त्वरितो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। धनुर्विष्फारयात्यर्थमहं ध्मास्यामि चाम्बुजम्
Then the heroic descendant of the Vrishni clan quickly spoke to Arjuna: 'While you string your bow with great force, I shall blow the conch.'
ततो विष्फार्य बलवद्गाण्डीवं जघ्निवान्रिपून्। महता शरवर्षेण तलशब्देन चार्जुनः
Thereupon Arjuna, powerfully stringing the Gandiva, struck down the enemies with a great shower of arrows and the sound of the bowstring.
पाञ्चजन्यं च बलवान्दध्मौ तारेण केशवः। रजसा ध्वस्तपक्ष्मान्तः प्रस्विन्नवदनो भृशम्
Mighty Kesava blew the Panchajanya conch with a loud note; his face was covered in dust and sweat, his eyelashes disturbed by the wind.
तेनाच्युतोष्ठपुटपूरितमारुतेन शङ्खान्तरोदरविवृद्धविनिःसृतेन। नादेन सासुरवियत्सुरलोकपाल-- मुद्विग्नमीश्वर जगत्स्फुटतीव सर्वम्
By the wind filled from Achyuta's lips and released through the expanded hollow of the conch, with that sound, the whole world—gods, demons, guardians of the worlds—seemed shaken, O Lord, as if everything would burst apart.
तस्य शङ्खस्य नादेन धनुषो निःस्वनेन च। निःसत्वाश्च ससत्वाश्च क्षितौ पेतुस्तदा जनाः
At the sound of that conch and the twang of the bow, both the living and the lifeless among men fell to the ground at that time.
तैर्विमुक्तो रथो रेजे वाय्वीरित इवाम्बुदः। जयद्रथस्य गोप्तारस्ततः क्षुब्धाः सहानुगाः
Freed by them, the chariot shone like a cloud driven by the wind; the protectors of Jayadratha, agitated, gathered with their followers.
ते दृष्ट्वा सहसा पार्थं गोप्तारः सैन्धवस्य तु। चक्रुर्नादान्महेष्वासाः कम्पयन्तो वसुन्धराम्
Seeing Partha suddenly, the protectors of the Sindhu prince, those great archers, made loud noises, shaking the earth.
बाणशब्दरवांश्चोग्रान्विमिश्राञ्शङ्खनिःस्वनैः। प्रादुश्चक्रुर्महात्मानः सिंहनादरवानपि
Those great souls produced fierce sounds of arrows, mingled with the blasts of conches, and also roars like lions.
तं श्रुत्वा निनदं घोरं तावकानां समुत्थितम्। प्रदध्मतुः शङ्खवरौ वासुदेवधनञ्जयौ
Hearing that terrible uproar rising from your side, Vasudeva and Dhananjaya both blew their excellent conches.
तेन शब्देन महता पूरितेयं वसुन्धरा। सशैला सार्णवद्वीपा सपाताला विशाम्पते
With that great sound, the earth was filled—together with its mountains, oceans, islands, and netherworlds, O lord of men.
स शब्दो भरतश्रेष्ठ व्याप्य सर्वा दिशो दश। प्रतिसस्वान तत्रैव कुरुपाण्डवयोर्बले
That sound, O best of the Bharatas, spreading through all ten directions, echoed right there in the armies of the Kurus and Pandavas.
तावका रथिनस्तत्र दृष्ट्वा कृष्णधनञ्जयौ। सम्भ्रमं परमं प्राप्तास्त्वरमाणा महारथाः
There, seeing Krishna and Dhananjaya, your chariot-warriors were seized with utmost confusion, and the great warriors hurried about.
अथ कृष्णौ महाभागौ तावका वीक्ष्य दंशितौ। अभ्यद्रवन्त सङ्क्रुद्धास्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Then, seeing the two exalted Krishnas enraged, your men rushed forward in fury; it was a wondrous sight.
सौमदत्तिं त्रिभिर्विद्व्वा शल्यं च दशभिः शरैः। शितैरग्निशिखाकारैर्द्रौणिं विव्याध चाष्टभिः
He struck Saumadatti with three sharp arrows, Shalya with ten blazing like tongues of fire, and Drona's son with eight.
