ततः प्रहस्य गोविन्दः साधुसाध्वित्यथाब्रवीत्। शरवेश्मनि पार्थेन कृते तस्मिन्महात्मना
Then Govinda laughed and said, 'Excellent, excellent,' when the great-souled Partha had made that house of arrows.
स ताँल्लब्धोदकान्स्नाताञ्जग्धान्नान्विगतक्लमान्। योजयामास संहृष्टः पुनरेव रथोत्तमे
Having obtained water, bathed, eaten food, and recovered from fatigue, he joyfully yoked them again to the excellent chariot.
स तं रथवरं शौरिः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः। समास्थाय महातेजाः सार्जुनः प्रययौ द्रुतम्
Shauri, the foremost among all wielders of weapons, of great energy, mounted that splendid chariot and swiftly departed with Arjuna.
योजयित्वा हयांस्तस्य विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा। रणे चचार गोविन्दस्तृणीकृत्य महारथान्
Having yoked the horses by the prescribed rite, Govinda moved in battle, disregarding the mighty chariot-warriors.
रथं रथवरस्याजौ युक्तं लब्धोदकैर्हयैः। दृष्ट्वा कुरुबलश्रेष्ठाः पुनर्विमनसोऽभवन्
Seeing the chariot of the foremost charioteer, yoked with horses refreshed by water, the chiefs of the Kuru army became disheartened again.
विनिःस्वसन्तस्ते राजन्भग्नदंष्ट्रा इवोरगाः। घिगहोऽतिगतः पार्थः कृष्णश्चेत्यब्रुवन्पृथक्
They sighed, O King, like serpents with broken fangs, and separately said, 'Partha and Krishna have gone beyond us.'
तत्सैन्यं सर्वतो दृष्ट्वा रोमहर्षणमद्भुतम्। त्वरध्वमिति चाक्रन्दन्नैतदस्तीति चावुवन्
Seeing that wondrous, hair-raising sight everywhere, the whole army cried out, 'Hurry!' and declared, 'This is so!'
सर्वक्षत्रस्य मिषतो रथेनैकेन दंशितौ। बालः क्रीडनकेनेव कदर्थीकृत्य नो बलम्
Before all the kshatriyas, the two, with a single chariot, defied us, like a boy with a toy, belittling our strength.
क्रोशतां यतमानानामसंसक्तौ परन्तपौ। दर्शयित्वाऽत्मनो वीर्यं प्रयातौ सर्वराजसु
While all were shouting and striving, those two scorers of foes, showing their own valor, departed among all the kings.
यथा देवासुरे युद्धे तृणीकृत्य च दानवान्। इन्द्राविष्णू पुरा राजञ्जम्भस्य वधकाङ्क्षिणौ
Just as, in the battle of gods and asuras, Indra and Vishnu once disregarded the Danavas, desiring to slay Jambha, O King.
तौ प्रयातौ पुनर्दृष्ट्वा तदाऽन्ये सैनिकाब्रुवन्। त्वरध्वं कुरवः सर्वे वधे कृष्णकिरीटिनोः
Seeing them depart again, other soldiers said, 'Hurry, Kurus, all of you, to slay Krishna and the diademed one.'
रथं युङ्क्त्वा हि दाशार्हो मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम्। जयद्रथाय यात्येष कदर्थीकृत्य नो रणे
For the Dasharha, before all archers, has yoked the chariot and goes to Jayadratha, belittling us in battle.
तत्र केचिन्मिथो राजन्समभाषन्त भूमिपाः। अदृष्टपूर्वं सङ्ग्रामे तदृष्ट्वा महदद्भुतम्
There, O King, some of the rulers spoke among themselves, having witnessed in battle a great and wondrous event never seen before.
सर्वसैन्यानि राजा च धृतराष्ट्रोऽत्ययं गतः। दुर्योधनापराघेन क्षत्रं कृत्स्ना च मेदिनी
All the armies and King Dhritarashtra have reached destruction; through Duryodhana’s defeat, the entire kshatriya order and the earth itself are undone.
विलयं समनुप्राप्ता तच्च राजा न बुध्यते। इत्येवं क्षत्रियास्तत्र ब्रुवन्त्यन्ये च भारत
They have met their end, yet the king does not realize it; so spoke the kshatriyas there, and others as well, O Bharata.
सिन्धुराजस्य यत्कृत्यं गतस्य यमसादनम्। तत्करोतु वृथादृष्टिर्धार्तराष्ट्रोऽनुपायवित्
Let the son of Dhritarashtra, ignorant of proper means and seeing in vain, do what is to be done for the Sindhu king, who has gone to the abode of Yama.
ततः शीघ्रतरं प्रायात्पाण्डवः सैन्धवं प्रति। विवर्तमाने तिग्मांशौ हृष्टैः पीतोदकैर्हयैः
Then the son of Pandu swiftly set out towards the Sindhu king, as the blazing sun turned, with delighted horses refreshed by clear water.
तं प्रयान्तं महाबाहुं सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम्। नाशक्नुवन्वारयितुं योधाः क्रुद्धमिवान्तकम्
The warriors could not restrain that mighty-armed one as he advanced—best among all who bear arms—like Death himself, enraged.
विद्राव्य तु ततः सैन्यं पाण्डवः शत्रुतापनः। यथा मृगगणान्सिंहः सैन्धवार्थे व्यलोडयत्
Driving off the army, the Pandava, scorcher of foes, scattered them for the sake of the Sindhu king, as a lion scatters herds of deer.
गाहमानस्त्वनीकानि तूर्णमश्वानचोदयत्। बलाकाभं तु दाशार्हः पाञ्चजन्यं व्यनादयत्
Penetrating the divisions, he urged his horses swiftly; and the descendant of Dasharha sounded the Panchajanya, white as a flock of cranes.
कौन्तेयेनाग्रतः सृष्टा न्यपतन्पृष्ठतः शराः। तूर्णात्तूर्णतरं ह्यश्वाः प्रावहन्वातरंहसः
Arjuna released arrows from the front, which fell behind him; and the horses, swifter than the wind, carried them ever faster.
ततो नृपतयः क्रुद्धाः परिवव्रुर्धनञ्जयम्। क्षत्रिया बहवश्चान्ये जयद्रथवधैषिणम्
Then the enraged kings and many other kshatriyas surrounded Dhananjaya, who sought the slaying of Jayadratha.
सैन्येषु विप्रयातेषु धिष्ठितं पुरुषर्षभम्। दुर्योधनोऽत्वयात्पार्थं त्वरमाणो महाहवे
As the armies were scattered, Duryodhana hastened towards Partha, who stood firm in the great battle, bull among men.
वातोद्धूतपताकं तं रथं जलदनिःस्वनम्। घोरं कपिध्वजं दृष्ट्वा विषण्णा रथिनोऽभवन्
Seeing that chariot, with its flag whipped by the wind and roaring like a cloud, bearing the dreadful ape-banner, the chariot-warriors became despondent.
दिवाकरेऽथ रजसा सर्वतः संवृते भृशम्। शरार्ताश्चरणे योधाः शेकुः कृष्णौ न वीक्षितुम्
When the sun was completely veiled by dust, the warriors, tormented by arrows, could not look upon Krishna and Arjuna as they advanced.
यद्यस्य समरे गोप्ता शक्रो देवगणैः सह। तथाप्येनं निहंस्याव इति कृष्णावभाषताम्
Even if Indra himself, with all the gods, were his protector in battle, still we would slay him—so spoke Krishna and Arjuna.
इति कृष्णौ महाबाहू मिथः कथयतां तदा। सिन्धुराजमवेक्षन्तौ त्वत्पुत्रा बहु चुक्रुशुः
Thus those mighty-armed Krishnas spoke together, watching the Sindhu king, while your sons raised a great clamor.
अतीत्य मरुधन्वानं प्रयान्तौ तृषितौ गजौ। पीत्वा वारि समाश्वस्तौ तथैवास्तामरिन्दमौ
Passing through the Maru desert, the two elephants, parched, drank water and were refreshed; so too did those two subduers of enemies rest.
व्याघ्रसिंहगजाकीर्णानतिक्रम्य च पर्वतान्। वणिजाविव दृश्येतां हीनमृत्यू जरातिगौ
Having crossed mountains teeming with tigers, lions, and elephants, they appeared like merchants who, having escaped death, journey on, surpassing old age.
तथाहि मुखवर्णोऽयमनयोरिति मेनिरे। तावका वीक्ष्य मुक्तौ तौ विक्रोशन्ति स्म सर्वशः
For thus, seeing the pallor of their faces, your men thought, 'These two are released,' and all of them cried out aloud.
