तं चास्य मनसा द्रोणः पूजयामास विक्रमम्। लाघवं वासवस्येव सम्प्रेक्ष्य द्विजसत्तमः
Droṇa honored his valor in his mind, observing his swiftness like that of Vāsava, O best of twice-born.
तुतोषास्त्रविदां श्रेष्ठस्तथा देवाः सवासवाः। न तामालक्षयामासुर्लघुतां शीघ्रचारिणः
The foremost among weapon-masters was pleased, as were the gods with Vāsava; yet they did not notice the lightness of the swift-moving one.
देवाश्च युयुधानस्य गन्धर्वाश्च विशाम्पते। सिद्धचारणसङ्घाश्च विदुर्द्रोणस्य कर्म तत्
The gods, Gandharvas, and hosts of Siddhas and Cāraṇas, O lord of men, recognized Droṇa's deed regarding Yuyudhāna.
ततोऽन्यद्धनुरादाय द्रोणः क्षत्रियमर्दनः। अस्त्रैरस्त्रविदां श्रेष्ठो योधयामास भारत
Then Droṇa, crusher of warriors, took up another bow and, being the best among weapon-masters, fought with weapons, O Bhārata.
तस्यास्त्राण्यस्त्रमायाभिः प्रतिहत्य स सात्यकिः। जघान निशितैर्बाणैस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Sātyaki countered his weapons with weapon-magic and struck him with sharp arrows; it appeared wondrous.
तस्यातिमानुषं कर्म दृष्ट्वाऽन्यैरसमं रणे। युक्तं योगेन योगज्ञास्तावकाः समपूजयन्
Seeing his superhuman feat, unmatched by others in battle, your men, skilled in yoga, honored him with proper reverence.
यदस्त्रमस्यति द्रोणस्तदेवास्यति सात्यकिः। तमाचार्योऽथ सम्भ्रान्तोऽयोधयच्छत्रुतापनः
Whatever weapon Droṇa launched, Sātyaki launched the same; then the teacher, bewildered, fought fiercely, tormentor of foes.
ततः क्रुद्धो महाराज धनुर्वेदस्य पारगः। वधाय युयुधानस्य दिव्यमस्त्रमुदैरयत्
Then, enraged, O great king, the master of the science of archery invoked a divine weapon for the destruction of Yuyudhāna.
तदाग्नेयं महाघोरं रिपुघ्नमुपलक्ष्य सः। दिव्यमस्त्रं महेष्वासो वारुणं समुदैरयत्
Perceiving that dreadful, enemy-slaying Agneya weapon, the great archer invoked the divine Vāruṇa weapon.
हाहाकारो महानासीद्दृष्ट्वा दिव्यास्त्रधारिणौ। न विचेरुस्तदाऽऽकाशे भूतान्याकाशगान्यपि
A great cry of 'ha-ha' arose upon seeing the wielders of divine weapons; at that time, even the beings that move in the sky did not roam there.
अस्त्रे ते वारुणाग्नेये यदा बाणैः समाहिते। न यावदभ्यपद्येतां व्यावर्तदथ भास्करः
When those Vāruṇa and Agneya weapons were engaged with arrows, before they could approach each other, the sun withdrew.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः। नकुलः सहदेवश्च पर्यरक्षन्त सात्यकिम्
Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīmasena, Nakula, and Sahadeva protected Sātyaki.
धृष्टद्युम्नमुखैः सार्धं विराटश्च सकेकयः। मत्स्याः साल्वेयसेनाश्च द्रोणमाजग्मुरञ्जसा
Along with Dhṛṣṭadyumna and others, Virāṭa with the Kekayas, the Matsyas, and the Sālveyas quickly approached Droṇa.
दुःशासनं पुरस्कृत्य राजपुत्राः सहस्रशः। द्रोणमभ्युपपद्यन्त सपत्नैः परिवारितम्
With Duḥśāsana at their head, thousands of royal princes surrounded Droṇa, encircled by rivals.
रजसा संवृते लोके शरजालसमावृते।। सर्वमाविग्नमभवन्न प्राज्ञायत किञ्चन
With the world covered in dust and a net of arrows, everything was obscured; nothing could be discerned.
सैन्येन रजसा ध्वस्ते निर्मर्यादमवर्तत।। `तेनान्तरेण पार्थस्तु रणे जित्वा महारिपून्
With the army shrouded in dust, all boundaries vanished; meanwhile, Arjuna conquered great enemies in battle.
अतिक्रान्तस्तदा युद्धं कृत्वा पर्यवतस्थिवान्
Having surpassed that battle, he stood after accomplishing his task.
ततस्तौ तु शरौघेण बीभत्सुं सहकेशवम्। आच्छादयेतां संरब्धौ सिंहनादं च चक्रतुः
Then those two, enraged, covered Bhībhatsu and Keśava with a shower of arrows and uttered lion-roars.
तयोस्तु धनुषी मुष्टौ भल्लाभ्यां श्वेतवाहनः। चिच्छेद समरे तूर्णं भूय एव धनञ्जयः। अथान्यैर्विशिखैस्तूर्णं ध्वजौ च कनकोज्ज्वलौ
White-horsed Arjuna swiftly cut the bows from their hands with two arrows in battle, and then again, O Dhananjaya, with other sharp shafts, he struck down their two golden-crested standards.
अथान्ये धनुषी राजन्प्रगृह्य समरे तदा। पाण्डवं भृशसङ्क्रुद्धावर्दयामासतुः शरैः
Then, O King, those others seized new bows in the fight and, filled with fierce anger, showered the son of Pandu with arrows.
तयोस्तु भृशसङ्क्रुद्धः शराभ्यां पाण्डुनन्दनः। धनुषी चिच्छिदे तूर्णं भूय एव धनञ्जयः
But the son of Pandu, greatly enraged, quickly cut down their bows again with two arrows, O Dhananjaya.
तथान्यैर्विशिखैस्तूर्णं रुक्मपुङ्खैः शिलाशितैः। जघानाश्वांस्तथा सूतौ पार्ष्णी च सपदानुगौ
Then, with other swift arrows, feathered with gold and tipped with steel, he struck down their horses, their charioteers, and their followers on foot.
ज्येष्ठस्य च शिरः कायात्क्षुरप्रेण न्यकृन्तत। स पपात हतः पृथ्व्यां वातरुग्ण इव द्रुमः
And with a razor-headed arrow, he severed the elder's head from his body; he fell slain to the earth like a tree felled by the wind.
विन्दं तु निहतं दृष्ट्वा ह्यनुविन्दः प्रतापवान्। हताश्वं रथमुत्सृज्य गदां गृह्य महाबलः
Seeing Vinda slain, Anuvinda, mighty in valor, abandoned his chariot with its dead horses, seized his mace, and stood firm.
अभ्यवर्तत सङ्ग्रामे भ्रातुर्वधमनुस्मरन्। गदया रथिनां श्रेष्ठो नृत्यन्निव महारथः
Remembering his brother's death, the great chariot-warrior, best among warriors, advanced into battle, whirling his mace as if dancing.
अनुविन्दस्तु गदया ललाटे मधुसूदनम्। स्पष्ट्वा नाकम्पयत्क्रुद्धो मैनाकमिव पर्वतम्
Anuvinda, in his wrath, struck Madhusudana on the forehead with his mace, but did not shake him, just as one cannot shake Mount Mainaka.
तस्यार्जुनः शरैः षड्भिर्ग्रीवां पादौ भुजौ शिरः। निचकर्त स सञ्छन्नः पपाताद्रिचयो यथा
Then Arjuna, with six arrows, cut off his neck, feet, arms, and head; he fell, his body scattered, like a heap of mountains collapsing.
ततस्तौ निहतौ दृष्ट्वा तयो राजन्पदानुगाः। अभ्यद्रुवन्त सङ्क्रुद्धाः किरन्तः शतशः शरान्
Then, seeing those two slain, their attendants, O King, rushed forward in fury, showering hundreds of arrows.
तानर्जुनः शरैस्तूर्णं निहत्य भरतर्षभ। व्यरोचत यथा वह्निर्दावं दग्ध्वा हिमात्यये
Arjuna swiftly struck down those men with arrows, O bull of Bharata's race, shining like fire after burning a forest at winter's end.
तयोः सेनामतिक्रम्य कृच्छ्रादिव धनञ्जयः। विबभौ जलदं हित्वा दिवाकर इवोदितः
Having overcome the armies of those two with great difficulty, Dhananjaya shone forth like the sun rising after casting off a cloud.
