दुर्धर्षस्त्वेष शत्रूणां रणेषु भविता सदा। अस्त्रस्यास्य प्रभावाद्वै व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः
'Yet, by the power of this weapon, he will always be unconquerable by his enemies in battle; let your anxiety be dispelled.'
इत्युक्त्वा वरुणः प्रादाद्गदां मन्त्रपुरस्कृताम्। यामासाद्य दुराधर्षः सर्वलोके श्रुतायुधः
Having said this, Varuna gave him a mace empowered by mantras, by which Shrutayudha became invincible throughout the world.
उवाच चैनं भगवान्पुनरेव जलेश्वरः। अयुध्यति न मोक्तव्या सा त्वय्येव पतेदिति
And again, the blessed lord of waters said to him, 'It must not be hurled at one who is not fighting; if you do, it will fall back upon you.'
हन्यादेषा प्रतीपं हि प्रयोक्तारमपि प्रभो। न चाकरोत्स तद्वाक्यं प्राप्ते काले श्रुतायुधः
'If used wrongly, it will destroy even its wielder, O lord.' But when the time came, Shrutayudha did not heed that command.
स तया वीरघातिन्या जनार्दनमताडयत्। प्रतिजग्राह तां कृष्णः पीनेनांसेन वीर्यवान्। नाकम्पयत शौरिं सा विन्ध्यं गिरिमिवानिलः
With that deadly mace, he struck Janardana; but Krishna, strong-shouldered and mighty, caught it, and it did not shake the heroic Shauri, just as the wind cannot shake Mount Vindhya.
ततोऽर्जुनः क्षुरप्राभ्यां भुजौ परिघसन्निभौ। चिच्छेद पाण्डवः शीघ्रं जलेश्वरसुतस्य वै
Then Arjuna, with two razor-headed arrows, swiftly severed the arms of the son of the lord of waters, which were like iron clubs.
स ज्वलन्ती महोल्केव समासाद्य जनार्दनम्'। प्रत्यागता महावेगा कृत्येव दुरधिष्ठिता
Blazing like a great meteor, it rushed toward Janardana and then returned with tremendous speed, like a dire magical force sent back.
जघान चास्थितं वीरं श्रुतायुधममर्षणम्। `स पपात हतो भूमौ विशिरा विभुजो बली। सम्भग्न इव वातेन बहुशाखो वनस्पतिः
It struck the heroic Śrutāyudha, who stood firm and unyielding; he fell slain to the ground, headless and with arms outstretched, like a great tree with many branches broken by the wind.
सा विस्फुरन्ती ज्वलिता वज्रवेगसमा गदा'। हत्वा श्रुतायुधं वीरं धरणीमन्वपद्यत
That mace, flaming and quivering, equal in force to a thunderbolt, having slain the valiant Śrutāyudha, fell to the earth.
गदां निवर्तितां दृष्ट्वा निहतं च श्रुतायुधम्। हाहाकारो महांस्तत्र सैन्यानां समजायत। स्वेनास्त्रेण हतं दृष्ट्वा श्रुतायुधमरिन्दमम्
Seeing the mace returned and Śrutāyudha slain, a great outcry arose among the troops, for they saw the enemy-subduing Śrutāyudha killed by his own weapon.
अयुध्यमानाय ततः केशवाय नराधिप। क्षिप्ता श्रुतायुधेनाथ तस्मात्तमवधीद्गदा
Then, because Śrutāyudha had hurled his mace at Keśava, who was not fighting, that very mace killed him.
यथोक्तं वरुणेनाजौ तथा स निधनं गतः। व्यसुश्चाप्यपतद्भूमौ प्रेक्षतां सर्वधन्विनाम्
Just as Varuṇa had foretold in battle, so he met his end, and his life departed as he fell to the ground before the eyes of all the archers.
पतमानस्तु स बभौ पर्णाशायाः प्रियः सुतः। सम्भग्न इव वातेन बहुशाखो वनस्पतिः
As he fell, the beloved son of Parṇāśāyā shone, like a great tree with many branches broken by the wind.
ततः सर्वाणि सैन्यानि सेनामुख्याश्च सर्वशः। प्राद्रवन्त हतं दृष्ट्वा श्रुतायुधमरिन्दमम्
Then all the armies and their leaders fled in every direction, seeing the enemy-subduing Śrutāyudha slain.
ततः काम्भोजराजस्य पुत्रः शूरः सुदक्षिणः। अभ्ययाज्जवनैरश्वैः फल्गुनं शत्रुसूदनम्
Then Sudakṣiṇa, the valiant son of the king of the Kāmbojas, advanced swiftly with his fleet horses against Phālguna, the destroyer of foes.
तस्य पार्थः शरान्सप्त प्रेषयामास भारत। ते तं शूरं विनिर्भिद्य प्राविशन्धरणीतलम्
Pārtha sent seven arrows at him, O Bhārata; those arrows pierced the hero and entered the earth.
सोऽतिविद्धः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्गाण्डीवप्रेषितैर्मृधे। अर्जुनं प्रतिविव्याध दशभिः कङ्कपत्रिभिः
Though struck with sharp arrows dispatched from Gāṇḍīva in battle, he retaliated against Arjuna with ten arrows tipped with vulture feathers.
वासुदेवं त्रिभिर्विद्ध्वा पुनः पार्थं च पञ्चभिः। तस्य पार्थो धनुश्छित्त्वा केतुं चिच्छेद मारिष
He struck Vāsudeva with three arrows, and then Pārtha with five; but Pārtha cut down his bow and then his banner, O Māriṣa.
भल्लाभ्यां भृशतीक्ष्णाभ्यां तं च विव्याध पाण्डवः। स तु पार्थं त्रिभिर्विद्ध्वा सिंहनादमथानदत्
With two very sharp broad-headed arrows, the Pāṇḍava wounded him; but Sudakṣiṇa, after striking Pārtha with three arrows, roared like a lion.
सर्वपारशवीं चैव शक्तिं शूरः सुदक्षिणः। सघण्टां प्राहिणोद्धोरां क्रुद्धो गाण्डीवधन्वने
The valiant Sudakṣiṇa, enraged, hurled his mighty spear adorned with bells, all made of iron, at the wielder of Gāṇḍīva.
सा ज्वलन्ती महोल्केव तमासाद्य महारथम्। सविस्फुलिङ्गा निर्भिद्य निपपात महीतले
Blazing like a great meteor, that spear, with sparks flying, struck the great chariot and, splitting it, fell to the earth.
शक्या त्वभिहतो गाढं मूर्च्छयाऽभिपरिप्लुतः। समाश्वास्य महातेजाः सृक्विणी परिलेलिहन्
Though struck hard and overwhelmed by dizziness, Śakya, of great energy, recovered himself, licking his lips.
तं चतुर्दशभिः पार्थो नाराचैः कङ्कपत्रिभिः। साश्वध्वजधनुःसूतं विव्याधाचिन्त्यविक्रमः
Then Pārtha, of unfathomable valor, struck him, his horses, banner, bow, and charioteer with fourteen iron arrows tipped with vulture feathers.
रथं चान्यैः सुबहुभिश्चक्रे विशकलं शरैः। सुदक्षिणं तं काम्भोजं मोघसङ्कल्पविक्रमम्। बिभेद हृदि बाणेन पृथुधारेण पाण्डवः
With many other arrows, he shattered the chariot; and Pāṇḍava pierced Sudakṣiṇa, the Kāmboja, whose efforts had failed, in the heart with a broad-headed arrow.
स भिन्नवर्मा स्रस्ताङ्गः प्रभ्रष्टमुकुटाङ्गदः। पपाताभिमुखः शूरो यन्त्रमुक्त इव ध्वजः
He, with shattered armor, limbs fallen, crown and armlets cast aside, fell forward like a valiant banner released from its mechanism.
गिरेः शिखरजः श्रीमान्सुशाखः सुप्रतिष्ठितः। निर्भग्न इव वातेन कर्णिकारो हिमात्यये। विशीर्णः पतितो राजा प्रसार्य विपुलौ भुजौ
Like a splendid, well-rooted branch atop a mountain, or a karṇikāra tree broken by wind after winter, the king lay fallen, his mighty arms spread wide.
शेते स्म निहतो भूमौ काम्भोजास्तरणोचितः। महार्हाभरणोपेतः सानुमानिव पर्वतः
He lay slain upon the earth, accustomed to luxurious bedding, adorned with precious ornaments, like a mountain ridge.
सुदर्शनीयस्ताम्राक्षः कर्णिना स सुदक्षिणः। पुत्रः काम्भोजराजस्य पार्थेन विनिपातितः
Sudakṣiṇa, handsome and copper-eyed, son of the Kāmboja king, was struck down by Arjuna, along with Karṇin.
धारयन्नग्निसङ्काशां शिरसा काञ्चनीं स्रजम्। अशोभत महाबाहुर्व्यसुर्भूमौ निपातितः
Bearing a golden garland shining like fire upon his head, the great-armed hero lay lifeless on the ground, yet appeared resplendent.
ततः सर्वाणि सैन्यानि व्यद्रवन्त सुतस्य ते। हतं श्रुतायुधं दृष्ट्वा काम्भोजं च सुदक्षिणम्
Then all your son's armies fled, seeing Śrutāyudha slain and Sudakṣiṇa of the Kāmbojas fallen.
