यथा त्रस्यन्ति भूतानि सर्वाण्यशनिनिःस्वनात्। तथा शङ्खप्रणादेन वित्रेसुस्तव सैनिकाः
Just as all creatures tremble at the roar of thunder, so too did your soldiers become terrified by the blast of the conch.
प्रसुस्रुवुः शकृन्मूत्रं वाहनानि च सर्वशः। एवं सवाहनं सर्वमाविग्नमभवद्बलम्
All the animals and vehicles released urine and excrement; thus, your entire force, along with its mounts, became greatly disturbed.
सीदन्ति स्म नरा राजञ्शङ्खशब्देन मारिष। विसंज्ञाश्चाभवन्केचित्केचिद्राजन्वितत्रसुः
O King, men sank down at the sound of the conch, O Māriṣa; some lost consciousness, and others, O King, were seized with fear.
ततः कपिर्महानादं सहभूतैर्ध्वजालयैः। अकरोद्व्यादितास्यश्च भीषयंस्तव सैनिकान्
Then the great monkey, with its companions and banners, made a mighty roar, opening its mouth wide, frightening your soldiers.
ततः शङ्खाश्च भेर्यश्च मृदङ्गाश्चानकैः सह। पुनरेवाभ्यहन्यन्त तव सैन्यप्रहर्षणाः
Then conches and drums, together with mridangas and anakas, were sounded again, delighting your army.
नानावादित्रसंहादैः क्ष्वेडितास्फोटिताकुलैः। सिंहनादैः समुत्क्रुष्टैः समाधूतैर्महारथैः
With the mingled sounds of various instruments, neighings, clappings, and tumultuous lion-roars raised by the great chariot-warriors, the army was stirred.
तस्मिंस्तु तुमुले शब्दे भीरूणां भयवर्धने। अतीव हृष्टो दाशार्हमब्रवीत्पाकशासनिः
In that tumultuous and terrifying noise, which increased the fear of the timid, the son of Pritha, exceedingly joyful, spoke to Krishna.
तत्तथा तव पुत्रस्य सैन्यं युधि परन्तप। प्रभग्नं द्रुतमाविग्नमतीव शरपीडितम्
Thus, scorcher of foes, your son's army was broken, scattered, greatly disturbed, and sorely afflicted by arrows in battle.
मारुतेनेव महता मेघानीकं व्यदीर्यत। प्रकाल्यमानं तत्सैन्यं नाशकत्प्रतिवीक्षितुम्
Like a great mass of clouds torn apart by a mighty wind, that army, being swept away, could not withstand the assault.
प्रतोदैश्चापकोटीभिर्हुंकारैः साधुवाहितैः। कशापार्ष्ण्यभिघातैश्च वाग्भिरुग्राभिरेव च
Urged on by whips, bow-ends, shouts, well-aimed blows, lashes, heel-strikes, and harsh words,
चोदयन्तो हयांस्तूर्णं पलायन्ते स्म तावकाः। सादिनो रथिनश्चैव पत्तयश्चार्जुनार्दिताः
Your horsemen, charioteers, and foot-soldiers, struck by Arjuna, urged their horses swiftly but fled.
पार्ष्ण्यङ्गुष्ठाङ्कुशैर्नागं चोदयन्तस्तथाऽपरे। शरैः सम्मोहिताश्चान्ये तमेवाभिमुखा ययुः
Others urged their elephants with heels, toes, and goads; some, bewildered by arrows, went straight ahead toward him.
तव योघ हतोत्साहा विभ्रान्तमनसस्तदा
At that time, your troops, their spirit crushed and minds confused, were routed.
अथान्यद्धनुरादाय हार्दिक्यः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः। कृत्वा विधनुषौ वीरौ शरवर्षैरवाकिरत्
Then Hārdikya, overcome with anger, took up another bow and, having broken the bows of the two heroes, covered them with a shower of arrows.
तावन्ये धनुषी सज्ये कृत्वा भोजं विजघ्नतुः। तेनान्तरेषु बीभत्सुर्विवेशामित्रवाहिनीम्
Those two, stringing other bows, struck Bhoja; in that interval, Bibhatsu entered the enemy ranks.
न लेभाते तु तौ द्वारं वारितौ कृतवर्मणा। धार्तराष्ट्रेष्वनीकेषु यतमानौ नरर्षभौ
But those two, though striving among the Dhartarashtra ranks, could not find an entrance, being blocked by Kritavarma.
अनीकान्यर्दयन्युद्धे त्वरितः श्वेतवाहनः। नावधीत्कृतवर्माणं प्राप्तमप्यरिसूदनः
Swiftly, the white-horsed one, shattering the divisions in battle, did not slay Kritavarma, even though the destroyer of foes had reached him.
तं दृष्ट्वा तु तथाऽऽयान्तंशूरो राजा श्रुतायुधः। अभ्यद्रवत्सुसङ्क्रुद्धो विधुन्वानो महद्धनुः
Seeing him thus advancing, the valiant king Shrutayudha, greatly enraged, rushed forward, brandishing his great bow.
स पार्थं त्रिभिरानर्च्छत्सप्तत्या च जनार्दनम्। क्षुरप्रेण सुतीक्ष्णेन पार्थकेतुमताडयत्
He struck Partha with three arrows, and Janardana with seventy; then, with a razor-sharp arrow, he struck the banner of Partha.
ततोऽर्जुनो नवत्या तु शराणां नतपर्वणाम्। आजघान भृशं क्रुद्धस्तोत्रैरिव महाद्विपम्
Then Arjuna, greatly enraged, struck him with ninety well-feathered arrows, as an elephant is pierced by goads.
स तन्न ममृषे राजन्पाण्डवेयस्य विक्रमम्। अथैनं सप्तसप्तत्या नाराचानां समार्पयत्
He could not endure the valor of the son of Pandu, O King; then, in turn, he showered him with seventy-seven iron arrows.
तस्यार्जुनो धनुश्छित्त्वा शरावापं निकृत्य च। आजघानोरसि क्रुद्धः सप्तभिर्नतपर्वभिः
Arjuna, cutting his bow and severing his quiver, angrily struck him on the chest with seven well-feathered arrows.
अथान्यद्धनुरादाय स राजा क्रोधमूर्च्छितः। वासविं नवभिर्बाणैर्बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत्
Then, taking up another bow, that king, overcome with rage, struck Vasavi (Arjuna) on the arms and chest with nine arrows.
ततोऽर्जुनः स्मयन्नेव श्रुतायुधमरिन्दमः। शरैरनेकसाहस्रैः पीडयामास भारत
Then Arjuna, smiling, the subduer of enemies, harassed him with thousands of arrows, O Bharata.
अश्वांश्चास्यावधीत्तूर्णं सारथिं च महारथः। विव्याध चैनं सप्तत्या नाराचानां महाबलः
The mighty-armed hero swiftly killed his horses and his charioteer, and pierced him with seventy iron arrows.
हताश्वं रथमुत्सृज्य स तु राजा श्रुतायुधः। अभ्यद्रुवद्रुणे पार्थं गदामुद्यम्य वीर्यवान्
With his horses slain, King Shrutayudha abandoned his chariot and, raising his mace, bravely rushed at Partha.
वरुणस्यत्मजो वीरः स तु राजा श्रुतायुधः। पर्णाशाजननी यस्य शीततोया महानदी
That valiant king Shrutayudha, son of Varuna, whose mother was the great river Shitatoya, the Parṇāśā, advanced.
तस्य माताऽब्रवीद्राजन्वरुणं पुत्रकारणात्। अवध्योऽयं भवेल्लोके शत्रूणां तनयो मम
For the sake of her son, his mother said to Varuna, 'Let my son be invulnerable in the world to his enemies.'
वरुणस्त्वब्रवीत्प्रीतो ददाम्यस्मै वरं हितम्। दिव्यमस्त्रं सुतस्तेऽयं येनावध्यो भविष्यति
Pleased, Varuna replied, 'I grant him a boon for his welfare: your son shall receive a divine weapon by which he will be invulnerable.'
नास्ति चाप्यमरत्वं वै मनुष्यस्य कथञ्चन। सर्वेणावश्यमर्तव्यं जातेन सरितां वरे
'But immortality is not possible for a human in any way; all who are born must surely die, O best of rivers.'
