It is not possible to break the vow once made, even for the sake of victory; for Partha, overwhelmed by grief and delusion, has undertaken a great and daring act.
How will Yudhishthira become king if Arjuna is dead? For in him, O Pandava, all victory has been placed.
If we have performed any meritorious act, if we have given or sacrificed anything, may Savyasachi conquer his enemies by the fruit of all that.
As they spoke thus, hoping for victory, O lord, the night passed with great difficulty, O king.
In the middle of that night, Janardana awoke, and remembering Partha's vow, he spoke to Daruka.
O Daruka, Arjuna, afflicted and bereft of his kin, has vowed: 'I will slay Jayadratha tomorrow.'
When Duryodhana hears this, he will consult with his advisers so that Arjuna does not kill Jayadratha in battle.
All those divisions will protect Jayadratha; and Drona, together with his son, master of all weapons and their use,
Even a single mighty hero, with a thousand eyes, destroyer of the pride of demons and danavas, would not be able to slay him in battle while guarded by Drona.
Therefore, tomorrow I will act so that Arjuna, son of Kunti, will kill Jayadratha before the sun sets.
Neither wives, nor friends, nor relatives, nor kinsmen—no one is dearer to me than Arjuna, son of Kunti.
Without Arjuna, Dāruka, I am unable to look upon this world even for a moment; nor will it ever be so.
Having swiftly conquered all those, together with their allied elephants, I will slay, for Arjuna's sake, Karna and Duryodhana and their followers.
Tomorrow, let the three worlds witness my valor in the great battle, as I strive for Dhananjaya, O Dāruka.
Tomorrow, thousands of kings and hundreds of princes, with their horses, elephants, and chariots, will flee in battle, O Dāruka.
Tomorrow you will see the army of kings crushed by my discus, struck down in battle by me, enraged for the sake of the Pandavas.
Tomorrow, all the worlds—with their gods, gandharvas, spirits, serpents, and rakshasas—will know me as the friend of Savya-sācin.
Whoever hates him, hates me; whoever follows him, follows me. Thus let it be resolved in your mind: Arjuna is half my very body.
As soon as dawn breaks, prepare the excellent chariot according to the scriptures, and, taking it, depart with restraint.
Place upon the chariot, O charioteer, the divine mace Kaumodakī, the spear, the discus, the bow, the arrows, and all the equipment.
Then, having arranged a place for the banner in the chariot, set up the banner of the heroic Garuda, which adorns the chariot in battle.
Adorn the chariot with a canopy of gold mesh, shining like the sun and fire, crafted by Viśvakarma, and decorate the horses as well.
Harness the excellent steeds—Balāhaka, Meghapuṣpa, Śaibya, and Sugrīva—and stand there, armored, O Dāruka.
Upon hearing the thunderous sound of the conch Pāñcajanya, like the roar of a storm cloud, approach me swiftly.
In a single day, O Daruka, I shall cast off my anger and all my sorrows for my cousin, the son of my father's sister.
By every means, I shall strive so that Bhīma, in the sight of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, will slay Jayadratha in battle.
Whomever Bhīma strives to kill in battle, I believe he will surely slay them there and then.
Victory is certain for him—how could defeat arise—when you, O tiger among men, have taken up the reins as his charioteer?
So I shall act as you have spoken to me; let this night pass auspiciously for the sake of victory and triumph.
I have made a great vow to slay Jayadratha; tomorrow, O Keśava, I shall kill that wicked one, the slayer of my son.
