अनुयातश्च पितरं मातृपक्षं च वीर्यवान्। सहस्रशो रिपून्हत्वा हतः शूरो महारथः
Having followed his father and his mother's kin, that mighty warrior, having slain thousands of enemies, was himself slain—a hero, a great chariot-fighter.
आश्वासय स्नुषां राज्ञि मा शुचः क्षत्रिये भृशम्। श्वः प्रियं सुमहच्छ्रुत्वा विशोका भव नन्दिनि
Console the queen, your daughter-in-law; do not grieve so deeply for a Kshatriya. Tomorrow, hearing great and joyful news, be free from sorrow, O cherished one.
यत्पार्थेन प्रतिज्ञातं तत्तथा न तदन्यथा। चिकीर्षितं हि ते भर्तुर्न भवेज्जातु निष्फलम्
What Arjuna has vowed, that will surely come to pass, not otherwise; for what your husband intends will never be fruitless.
यदि च मनुजपन्नगाः पिशाचा रजनिचचाराः पतगाः सुरासुराश्च। रणगतमभियान्ति सिन्धुराजं न स भविता सह तैरपि प्रभाते
Even if men, serpents, spirits, night-wanderers, birds, gods, and demons all attack the Sindhu king in battle, by morning he will not remain with them.
अहो ह्यकाले प्रस्थानं कृतवानसि पुत्रक। विहाय फलकाले मां सुगृद्धां तव दर्शने
Alas, my son, you have departed at an untimely hour, leaving me, who longed so much to see you, at the time of fruition.
नूनं गतिः कृतान्तस्य प्राज्ञैरपि सुदुर्विदा। यत्र त्वं केशवे नाथे सङ्ग्रामेऽनाथवद्धतः
Truly, the path of destiny is hard to discern, even for the wise, when you, with Krishna as your protector, were slain in battle like one without support.
यज्वनां दानशीलानां ब्राह्मणानां कृतात्मनाम्। चरितब्रह्मचर्याणां पुण्यतीर्थावगाहिनाम्
May you attain the state reached by sacrificers, the charitable, the self-controlled Brahmins, those who have observed celibacy, and those who have bathed in holy waters.
कृतज्ञानां वदान्यानां गुरुशुश्रूषिणामपि। सहस्रदक्षिणानां च या गतिस्तामवाप्नुहि
May you attain the state reached by the grateful, the generous, those who serve their elders, and those who have given thousands of gifts.
या गतिर्युध्यमानानां शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम्। हत्वारीन्निहतानां च सङ्ग्रामे तां गति व्रज
May you go to the state attained by warriors who fight without turning back, who are slain in battle after defeating their foes.
गोसहस्रप्रदातॄणां क्रतुदानां च या गतिः। नैवेशिकं चाभिमतं ददतां या गतिः शुभा
May you attain the blessed state of those who give away thousands of cows, who perform sacrifices, and who give desired gifts to priests.
ब्राह्मणेभ्यः शरण्येभ्यो निधिं निदधतां च या। या चापि न्यस्तदण्डानां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक
May you reach the state of those who entrust treasures to worthy Brahmins, and of those who have renounced the rod of punishment.
ब्रह्मचर्येण यां यान्ति मुनयः संशितव्रताः। एकपत्न्यश्च यां यान्ति तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक

दीनानुकम्पिनां या च सततं संविभागिनाम्। पैशुन्याच्च निवृत्तानां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक
May you attain the state of those who are ever compassionate to the distressed, who always share with others, and who refrain from slander.
व्रतिनां धर्मशीलानां गुरुशुश्रूषिणामपि। अमोघातिथिनां या च तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक
May you attain the state of those who observe vows, who are righteous, who serve their elders, and who never let a guest go unhonored.
कृच्छ्रेषु या धारयतामात्मानं व्यसनेषु च। गतिः शोकाग्निदग्धानां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक
May you attain the state of those who endure hardship and adversity, and of those who are consumed by the fire of grief.
मातापित्रोश्च शुश्रूषां कल्पयन्तीह ये सदा। स्वदारनिरतानां च या गतिस्तामवाप्नुहि

ऋतुकाले स्वकां भार्यां गच्छतां या मनीषिणाम्। परस्त्रीभ्यो निवृत्तानां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक

साम्ना ये सर्वभूतानि पश्यन्ति गतमत्सराः। नारुन्तुदानां क्षमिणां या गतिस्तामवाप्नुहि
Attain that state which is reached by those who, free from envy, behold all beings with gentleness, who do not speak harshly, and who are forgiving.
मधुमांसान्निवृत्तानां मदाद्दृम्भात्तथाऽनृतात्। परोपतापादन्यायात्तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक
Go to that state, my child, which is attained by those who abstain from honey and meat, from intoxication, deceit, falsehood, harming others, and injustice.
हीमन्तः सर्वशास्त्रज्ञा ज्ञानतृप्ता जितेन्द्रियाः। यां गतिं साधवो यान्ति तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक

सोपचारस्तु कृष्णस्तां दुःखितां भृशदुःखितः। सिक्त्वाम्भसा समाश्वास्य तत्तदुक्त्वा हितं वचः
Krishna, deeply afflicted at her suffering, performed the proper rites, sprinkled her with water, comforted her, and spoke words of consolation.
विसंज्ञकल्पां रुदतीमपविद्धां प्रवेपतीम्। भगिनीं पुण्डरीकाक्ष इदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Seeing his sister weeping, cast down, trembling, and nearly unconscious, the lotus-eyed Krishna spoke these words to her.
सुभद्रे मा शुचः पुत्रं पाञ्चाल्याश्वासयोत्तराम्। गतोऽभिमन्युः प्रथितां गतिं क्षत्रियपुङ्गवः
Subhadra, do not grieve; comfort Uttara, the daughter-in-law of Draupadi. Abhimanyu, the foremost of warriors, has attained the renowned state.
ये चान्येऽपि कुले सन्ति पुरुषा नो वरानने। सर्वे न ते गतिं यान्ति याऽभिमन्योर्यशस्विनः
O beautiful-faced one, even among all the men of our lineage, none attain the state that the illustrious Abhimanyu has reached.
कुर्याम तद्वयं कर्म कुर्युर्युत्सुहृदश्च नः। कृतवान्यादृगद्यैकस्तव पुत्रो महारथः
Let us perform that deed, and let our friends in battle do so as well, which your heroic son alone has accomplished today with devotion.
एवमाश्वास्य भगिनीं द्रौपदीमपि चोत्तराम्। पार्थस्यैव महाबाहुः पार्श्वमागादरिन्दमः
Thus consoling his sister and also Draupadi and Uttara, the mighty-armed slayer of foes, Krishna, went to Partha's side.
ततोऽभ्यनुज्ञाय नृपान्कृष्णो बन्धूंस्तथाऽर्जुनम्। विवेशान्तः पुरे राजंस्ते च जग्मुः स्वमालयम्
Then Krishna, having taken leave of the kings, his relatives, and Arjuna, entered the inner city, and they all returned to their own dwellings.
