All, with faces downcast, surrounded Dhananjaya, gazing at one another with unblinking, sorrowful eyes.
Regaining consciousness, Vasavi, overcome with anger, trembled as if with fever, and breathed heavily again and again.
Clenching his hand in his palm, grinding his teeth, furrowing his brow in three lines, his eyes reddened with rage, he looked around like a madman and spoke these words.
I swear to you in truth: tomorrow I will slay Jayadratha, unless, out of fear of death, he flees from the Dhartarashtras.
If he does not seek refuge with Krishna, the supreme man, or with you, great king, tomorrow I will slay Jayadratha.
He who has pleased the Dhartarashtras, forgotten friendship with me, and caused the sinful killing of a child—tomorrow I will slay Jayadratha.
And whoever tries to protect him in battle and fights against me, even Drona or Kripa, O king, I will cover them with arrows.
If, in this battle, the foremost men do not act thus, may I not attain the worlds of the virtuous or those honored by heroes.
The worlds attained by those who kill their mothers, those who slay their fathers, those who violate their teacher’s wife, and those who are always slanderers—
Those who are envious of the virtuous, those who are habitual disputers, those who betray entrusted deposits, and those who break trust—
Those who revile women who have been previously enjoyed, those who speak ill of the virtuous, the worlds of brahmin-killers, and also those of cow-slayers—
The worlds of those who eat, without cause, milk, barley food, vegetables, porridge, flour cakes, and meat—may I attain those worlds if I do not defeat Jayadratha.
He who disrespects a learned and resolute twice-born, or who disregards elders, the virtuous, and teachers—
The fate of one who touches a brahmin, a cow, or fire with his foot, or who passes phlegm, excrement, or urine into water—may I attain that harsh fate if I do not defeat Jayadratha.
The fate of a naked man bathing, of a barren woman, of a guest who is not honored, of thieves, of liars, and of deceivers—
The fate of those who destroy themselves, of those who falsely accuse, and of those who are seen by their servants, sons, wives, or dependents—
The dreadful fate of those who eat delicious food without sharing it with the needy—may I attain that fate if I do not defeat Jayadratha.
He who abandons a virtuous person who has sought refuge and delights in his words, who does not support him, who is cruel-hearted, or who reviles a benefactor—
He who does not offer the ancestral rite to a worthy neighbor, or who gives it to the unworthy, or to the husband of a low-born woman—
The fate of a drunkard, one who violates boundaries, an ingrate, or one who reviles his master—may I quickly attain their fate if I do not defeat Jayadratha.
Those who eat with their left hand, who eat while sitting on their haunches, who use palāśa leaves as seats, or who clean their teeth with tinduka sticks—
The worlds of those who bow to the wicked, who sleep with their own wives during the forbidden season, of brahmins who fear the cold, and of kshatriyas who fear battle—
Those who dwell for six months in a village with only one well and no sound of the Veda, and those who revile the scriptures—
Those who have intercourse by day, who sleep during the day, those who burn houses, and those who give poison—
Those who neglect the fire and hospitality rites, those who obstruct cows on their way, those who have intercourse with a menstruating woman, and those who give away a maiden for a price—
And the fate of brahmins who, though having performed many sacrifices, live like dogs, and of those who indulge in oral sex, and those who delight in intercourse by day—
If, having promised a brāhmaṇa, someone gives out of greed and not truly, may I attain their fate if tomorrow I do not slay Jayadratha.
And whatever other unrighteous ones, not mentioned by me here, or those I have named—may I swiftly reach their fate.
If, after this night passes, I do not kill Jayadratha tomorrow, then hear now this further vow of mine.
If, while that sinner yet lives, the sun sets, then here itself I shall enter the blazing fire.
